Pack Lunch An informative website and blog focusing on raw feeding and natural healthcare for domestic carnivores.

This is the page for website/blog Pack Lunch, a site focusing on raw feeding and natural healthcare for domestic carnivores -- dogs, cats, and ferrets. "Like" the page to receive updates when new content is added. I started the website Pack Lunch in 2006 mainly to have a place to list my favorite links, recommendations, and local raw food resources. Over the years it grew to include my ow

n writings, and I revamped the site in 2012 and made a switch to a blog format, which I hope is easier to navigate and encourages discussion. Please come over to Pack Lunch, take a look at the articles, leave a comment, and share with friends and online communities you might be part of. *As of 2021 new content and communication is on hiatus, but the website is available, as always!*

Well, folks, it's time to say goodbye. The Pack Lunch website has been dismantled, and I will be letting the web hosting expire. It's been a great run, but the world is a different place than it was in 2006 when I started the site. Thanks for the interest and all the great conversations over the last 18 years!

Hi all, I just wanted to call your attention to a bit of news that illustrates the need to pay attention to where your food comes from and how you "vote" with your dollars.

The pet food company, Chewy, announced the other day they've partnered with the Humane Society of the United States for a campaign of monetary support that *sounds* great, but requires a deeper look. Many people assume that the HSUS oversees local animal shelters and does most of their work with cats, dogs, and domestic pets but this is NOT the case. The HSUS is a powerful and DANGEROUS organization. They use manipulative advertising to lead people to believe their interests are in helping the cause of domestic pets, but in reality their ideals are more in line with radical "animal rights" movements like PETA. They do most of their work in courtrooms using litigation to block efforts in the realms of food production and wildlife management and conservation.

If you currently use Chewy for any of your pet's needs I encourage you to re-think any future purchases and let Chewy know that you do not want any of your money passing through the hands of an entity that strives to block the very food resources your dog and cat require to be healthy, and puts the health and sustainability of wildlife and the science-based systems we have in place to help manage them at risk.

Happy New Year everyone! 🎉

I had a 2019 accomplishment related to Pack Lunch that I neglected to share via FB when it was finished: I put the article that defines and explains the prey model through one hell of an overhaul. Find it here: http://www.packlunchraw.com/terminology-the-prey-model/. The "prey model" concept is coming under an increasing amount of fire by entities who favor a biochemical approach to dissecting and formulating diets for pets. As well, social media as a platform for sharing and education is causing a dangerous amount of reductionism, often presenting the "prey model" as the oversimplified "80-10-10" meme. If you're interested in checking up with your own understanding and/or practice of the "prey model" I invite you to read the article. Let me know what you think, too!

The issue of feeding less-than-fresh meat has been covered in the site FAQ section, but I decided it's an important enough topic to have its own page. Have you ever accidently left meat out for longer than you planned and wondered if it was still OK to feed? Do you figure if it's good enough for a wolf it's good enough for your dog? Should you let your dog bury meaty bones in the yard and eat them later? Maybe, maybe not. Visit the website to learn about the issue.

I have been replying to a lot of questions and concerns regarding Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) as applied to raw feeding. Though it's been a growing problem for a long time, the popular media has really grabbed hold of the "zombie deer epidemic" lately. It's causing fear and confusion for many raw feeders who make use of this valuable resource -- and those who want to. In this piece I share three current informative media pieces and identify some key points. Together they will help you make an informed decision when it comes to CWD and feeding the meat, bones, and organs of cervid species. ◽ Thanks to , , and for being those three contributors who present this issue in a balanced way. 👍

It's time. I still haven't decided on the best format for releasing the new and improved nutrient calculator spreadsheet for dogs, but it's high time I answered the call from the cat people for a cat version. I started work tonight. Hopefully the long wait for both will be coming to a conclusion soon!

It may seem like I’ve vanished, but never fear! 👋New material is in the works. Summer was busy, but I have ambitions for the upcoming winter. To get back into things, I created this diagram to share. 📈📉 Mineral interaction has been on my mind a lot lately. While most people following legitimate guidelines for feeding have little to worry about, proper mineral intake is about proportions as much as minimums and maximums, a fact that I think is often overshadowed in nutrition discussions. 💯 This diagram illustrates another important consideration -- interference and synergy. ➕➖ See the website for more info. 💻

A friend shared with me a news article about about a recent study published in the "Journal of Experimental Biology" that questions whether or not dogs and cats need as much protein as the current convention holds. To find out more about their conclusions and *my* conclusions about their conclusions and methods visit www.packlunchraw.com/want-vs-need.

New material up on the site. After running across several erroneous perceptions regarding ketogenic diets for pets I wanted to make a contribution to clearing things up. Keto dieting for humans shows promise in health maintenance and therapeutic applications, but -- as I'm fond of pointing out -- dogs are not humans, cats are not humans, and dogs and cats are not the same. Read the post at: www.packlunchraw.com/keto.
