Attention pet lovers of San Diego!

La Jolla Loves Pets and Decker’s have an epic Halloween Costume Contest and Bark-or-Treating this Saturday from 9 to 1! Tickets start at $10 and all proceeds go to local rescues!

There will be 100 (Yes! 100) adoptable pups at the event.

Event is free from 12pm-1 pm for anyone who may be looking for a dog.

Please spread the word and help the pups up for adoption find a home for Halloween!

Don’t want your pup on the furniture? No problem!

Give them a comfortable place to settle near the couch. If they jump on the couch, gently lead them to their spot instead. Give your pup lots of praise and treats any time they settle on their spot by themselves. If their spot becomes their “happy place” they will go there all of the time!

Leash Manners Matter!

Teaching your pup to sit when you stop walking is a great way to keep them safe and focused on you.

But make sure to give them sniff breaks too! Dogs “see” the world through scent so it’s important for their health and happiness that they get time to smell.

It’s important to have a pup that will stop on command.

You can use “Stop” if they are about to run into a street or step on something dangerous. It’s also a good way to redirect them if they want to jump on a guest.

Remember to give lots of praise when the pup is successful! Training should focus on YES!!!!! not no.

It’s normal for puppies to be afraid of different surfaces-in this case, a manhole cover. Never drag a pup towards something they are nervous of; instead use treats, praise, and encouragement to lure them onto the surface. Throw them a HUGE puppy party when they comply. If a manhole cover equals a party, the pup will quickly learn that there’s nothing to fear!

Pro Tip: If it’s a hot day, check the temperature of the surface before encouraging the pup to step onto it. A metal cover will be much hotter than cement.

Learning door manners is important for pups of all ages! Teaching pups to “Wait” when a door opens prevents them from sneaking out and makes sure they are well behaved when guests arrive.

Service dogs should have impeccable public manners! Learning the command “Under”, where a pup stands between the legs of their pet parent when in a store or public area, is a great way to keep a dog out of the way of others.

Happy Thanksgiving Pawtopia Peeps!

Here are the top 4 tips to keep your pup safe today!

A little Thanksgiving snack here and there may seem harmless to your pup, but the high fat and calorie food can lead to acute Pancreatitis, a serious medical condition.

With guests coming and going, it is easy for a door to accidentally be left open. Put up a gate or other type of boundary in the hallway leading to any high traffic door. This will keep Fido safe in the house and not out wandering the streets.

Cooked turkey bones splinter easily, and even small amounts of onions and chocolate can be dangerous. Make sure to keep all out of reach! This includes taking the trash out after dinner, so your dog doesn’t get a chance to steal some food when you are distracted.

Guests may not be comfortable around dogs and your dog might be nervous of strangers. Make sure your pup ALWAYS has a safe place to retreat to if they get overwhelmed with all of the holiday cheer!
