Mike is a little over 1 years old. He came into the shelter with his siblings that were left at the river in a feed bucket. Mike is a very large boy who weighs around 70 pounds. Mike loves going for walks, he does need some leash training to correct his pulling. Mike gets along great with other dogs, kids, and cats. He still does have that puppy energy that he needs to get out. Go to stephenmemorial.org and fill out an application!

Why adopt a senior dog?
Instant knowledge! You’ll know right away their full grown size, personality and other requirements. They are couch potatoes, and who doesn’t love to cuddle their four legged baby during movie nights at home. Or better yet, TWO babies!
Eleven years old and roaming the streets alone, that’s how Ruby and Maxine ended up at a shelter. We know their names because they are chipped, though all other information is outdated and no one has reported them as missing. We also know that they are litter mates. These girls have never been without each other, and we would love to keep it that way! In the time they have been in rescue it has been discovered that they were loved by someone at some point. They snuggle on the couch, their recall is amazing, and they are happy participants in just about everything that people do. Bark Avenue Dog Grooming made sure these girls look, smell and feel amazing after a spa day! They are eager to bond and settle into a new home. They are just as loyal and loving as younger pups, and they would love the opportunity to prove it.

Ruby is a cuddle bug and will happily lay next to you on the couch to get scratched, and despite her old age she loves to chase a ball and will even bring it back to you! Though only a couple of small throws so she doesn’t hurt herself, but when she is done she simply takes the ball and finds a cozy spot to lay down with it by her side.

Maxine is an oh so happy girl! Her little butt wiggles when you talk to her and she comes waddling over with a smile! But, we haven’t seen her catch a ball yet. We think that’s because she knows that it’s her sisters thing lol!

But, where there is one there is the other, and they definitely lean on each other for support. Which is why we’ve made the decision to adopt them out together. Imagine going your entire life in what we can only hope was a happy home, only to then find yourself scared and on the streets at 11 years old. But at least they weren’t alone, like so many others. They had each other...

We want them to live the rest of their days comfortable, pain free and loved. We realize a fear of adopting a senior (or two) is that they might not live much longer, but we believe they have a few good years still left in them! And those few good years will be full of so much love and laughter for whoever does open up their heart and their home to these beautiful girls! Not everyone out there is looking to adopt a senior dog, let alone two at once. These girls are a package deal and we can’t bear to see them separated.

Both of the girls are spayed, microchipped, fresh teeth cleaning, 100% potty trained, up to date on vaccinations and eager to live out their golden years on a fluffy couch with plenty of treats and pets and snuggles. They are good with cats, children, other dogs, kennel trained and are ready for retirement.

Carrot is a 9 year old female cat. Carrot was surrendered to the shelter with Artful Dodger because her owner had a medical emergency. Carrot is a very sweet girl. She was shy at first but is really coming out of her shell. She is a cat that is going to be a lap cat. If you sit on the floor of her pod she will hurry to get in your lap first. Carrot gets along great with other cats, kids and doesn't seem to mind dogs. Go to stephenmemorial.org and fill out an adoption application.

Our Story

Second Chance started with the death of my son, Bryan. I had a very difficult time accepting his death and I went to grief counseling. The counselor suggested that I find something to do. I began volunteering at different shelters and rescues in Iowa. After some time doing that, I decided that I wanted to start a dog rescue, one where the healthy, dog friendly dogs could live together as a pack. That was on January 9, 2013. The dogs literally saved my life. They need me just like my son did. It gives me reason to face each day, even without my son.

The days since then have been a rollercoaster ride that all of us here at Second Chance stand in line waiting to buy tickets for so we can ride again and again. Some days are funny and happy and wonderful. Some days are sad, heartbreaking and tearful. ALL days are a blessing. Each day with the dogs reminds me that we really can make a difference in this world. I get all the “thank you” I need when I see these dogs playing and feeling happy!

We want to give these dogs every possible chance to find their forever homes as well as help dogs who are strays or who have owners that can no longer care for them. Please complete an adoption application and get approved before coming to the rescue to meet dogs. The dog you want to meet could be at a temporary home or could already have an adoption application. We don't want you to drive out and be disappointed that the dog you want is not here. Thanks!
