A TRIBUTE TO MADDIE 2010 - 2023 Submitted by her owner Randi:
On March 23, 2023, Maddie made her final journey home, estimating she was probably around 13 years old. Her story is a special one! She was surrendered to a local pound after her master passed away. Fortunately, the pound administrator contacted BCRNC right away to avoid her being placed in a kennel!
I adopted her in 2015 and from that day, never a day went by I didn’t feel her love and companionship! As probably raised as a couch potato, she had lots of work to do to trim down and learn about the world. Unfortunately, and unbeknownst to BCRNC and myself, Maddie had a hip issue and had to go through 2 major surgeries, leaving her a bit handicapped in the activity and strength development, but she never seemed to complain about pain. And she never stopped loving, caring, or wanting to play until her passing. She loved to go to our local park and do goose control! She walked daily to the American River where she would swim until she was so tired, I was afraid we couldn’t make the walk home…of course there was always a neighbor pool she enjoyed too! Occasional trips to the beach were her absolute favorite thing. As soon as she smelled the ocean air, she was barking and ready to run free in the sand and surf.
Maddie was a Therapy Dog with Capital Therapy Dogs, which she helped start. She passed her evaluation with flying colors, was an AKC Canine Good Citizen, and achieved her Advance Therapy Dog status with AKC. Her favorite visits were at the UC Davis Cancer Infusion Center, where she sat with young and old, but truly loved the children, and they loved her. Everyone loved her. She spent time visiting Red Cross evacuation shelters, nursing home and senior facilities. She even visited CalOES Command Center during their activations to help de-stress the hard-working responders. Whoever said a Border Collie wouldn’t make a good therapy dog, never met her! She loved everyone and would walk from person to person and sit as close as she could get.
As Maddie began to slow down with arthritis, her desire to go swimming or walk to the river never did. She walked every day, and even though our days were slowing down, and our walks were a little shorter, she was anxious to go out and see the world. Even days before her passing, as we would walk on our street, she would stop and cozy up to each neighbor as if she was just checking in on them and saying hello.
She left a very deep hole in my heart, and she will always be My Special Angel Girl!
Thank you to Terri, from BCRNC for giving her up and letting me adopt her! She was my second BC from you and both Bodie and Maddie were such huge partners in life and the best Therapy Dogs one could ever find.
