Signs of Sociability

Space

In the same way that we don’t like strangers standing in our personal space, dogs will give space between themselves and whoever they are greeting.

If a dog is on a lead, their ability to create space will be compromised.

A social dog is likely to want to make contact with you. They will move close enough to be touched but not so close that they are pushing you.

A scared dog may want to move away so they can hide.

Most dogs will actually move back slightly if a person moves towards them in a direct way to try to maintain a polite distance between them.

If you lower your own body language by crouching down and turning your head and body to the side, the chances are the dog will come closer to you, rather than back away.

Once a dog knows you, the need for space is often reduced but bear in mind many dogs don’t really like to be hugged. They may tolerate it but do they really like it?

How can you tell? Ask yourself - would the dog move away if they could?

Signs of Sociability

These are body language and facial expressions that give us information about how a dog is feeling.

Orientation:

Is the dog facing the person head on or is the dog presenting its body side on?

They may obviously display the entire side of their body or do so more subtly, turning their head or shoulder away to create a curved posture. This is non-threatening body language and some dog’s will make this so clear that they present their rear to you.

Turning the head away or presenting the body side on says “I’m not a threat!”

Some dogs may lean into the person gently.

Other features to notice:
The ears are back.
The tongue is slightly sticking out.
The tail has a gentle, wagging curve.

Simple Tips To Help Dogs Feel Comfortable With Strangers.

🐾 Don’t put pressure on your dog to interact with strangers.

🐾 Tell strangers - SPACE. NO EYE CONTACT. NO TOUCHING, unless the dog initiates the interaction and is showing signs of sociability (more on that later!).

🐾 Don’t let the person put their hand in your dogs face to “sniff it”. The dog can already smell them and the person is at risk of getting snapped at or bitten.

🐾 If you get ignored, advocate for your dog and put yourself between your dog and the person. Be polite but firm with the stranger. You don’t have to explain why you’re saying no. They should simply respect that.

🐾 When your dog looks at a stranger, mark by saying “YES!”, reward and repeat.

🐾 Ask strangers to throw food in a way that encourages the dog to move away from them, opposed to dropping food close to the person to make the dog move forward. If the dog is wary, they won’t move forward or they will do so very hesitantly. Dispensing the food in this way means we aren’t putting the dog under unnecessary pressure, and this gives us a chance to look for signs of sociability; does the dog orient back towards the person and move closer, or are they still maintaining distance?

🐾 Learn to read the signs! (I will be sharing another post later about signs of sociability to help educate y’all!)

If your dog isn’t comfortable with petting from strangers, it’s okay to say “NO!”.

It’s so important to understand that when people come into your dog’s space to pet them, they are doing so for selfish reasons.

They want to touch your dog because it makes the person feel good. They aren’t doing it with the dog’s best interest at heart and these people can get really butt hurt when a dog doesn’t want to say hello or “rejects” them.

If someone politely tells you that their dogs doesn’t want to say hello, or explains what they would like you to do to help build their dogs confidence and they get outright ignored; with the stranger putting their hands in the dogs face, attempting to touch them, is so bloody disrespectful, and in return makes the owner feel bad and makes them think they have a bad dog.

Just because a dog doesn’t want it’s space invaded by strangers, does not make them a bad dog!

Our expectations of dogs are so incredibly high and it’s pretty unfair. Apparently to be a nice dog, they need to be eager to interact with every single person they meet.

The social pressures to allow people to invade our dogs space is so wrong, especially when most people have no idea how to read dog body language and can’t see when a dog is feeling uncomfortable.

There will be many dogs with issues with strangers due to lockdown and the lack of exposure. I’ve met many already at training class and have done 121’s with a few dogs recently for the same thing.

In another post I will share some tips that I recommend and have used with strangers dogs who have come to warm to me and interacted comfortably with me 🐾
