Paddy and Kevin made a lovely litter of 4.

Kevin (aka Vinny) lives with an adoring adopter down the road from us and comes back to visit for dates. His owner decided on an EGOT theme (references major American entertainment awards Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony). Perfect for a litter of 4!

Since weaning the pups have been raised by who took lovely pictures of them.

The litter is too small to open the waiting list for and pups are going to past adopters.

I’m loving how this litter is made, raised and staying in local hamster community!

Edit- Perfect home found!

This is Jane. Jane sadly was unable to raise a litter and we speculate that she had an issue feeding her pups. The good news for Jane is that she’s retired and ready to go to a fantastic pet home.

She’s a big (think baby guinea pig sized), silky-soft hunk of inquisitive cuteness who needs a big cage (the equivalent of a 75 gallon aquarium minimum), a 12” wheel and lots of enrichment.

Jane is just an all around good girl. As typical for female Syrian hamsters she’s active but Jane isn’t hyperactive, just busy. She’ll come out to visit any time of day or night and would love to run around and explore. She tolerates handling nicely but, in the way almost all hamsters are wiggly, she’s not likely to sit still long for petting.

Jane is not one of those girls who’s prone to getting chunky so you can indulge her desire for lots of treats, and of course lots of fresh foods.

If you live near Portland, Oregon and think you’d make a good forever home for Jane send me an email at [email protected] with a photo of your setup and a little information about your hamster care.

A couple days ago the newest Hamstery member arrived!

We’re taking a bit of a social media break to focus on getting settled in and enjoying her but we should be back up and taking applications this coming spring.

In the meantime email is the best way to reach me but I may not respond if the question is answered by the auto response with FAQ’s and responses may be slow. As always adopters are encouraged to text with any question or concern at any time any day!

Happy holidays!

A wonderful breeder stepped into help after an active member of the online hamster community died unexpectedly. It turns out that some of the hamsters in his care need a little extra help.

I’ll match one donation (chosen by a random number generator) if anyone would like to help!

Guess who’s still available due to a series of unexpected happenings?!? Zia! Why is she still available? There was a last minute switcharoo with her adopter and the next day we figured out that we’ll be bringing in some hamsters from other hamsteries. That resulted in breeding one more lovely litter from Zia instead of her beautiful sister Blue who just went to Hamstery.

Zia seemed to really enjoy motherhood and was a terrific mama. She’s a BIG active hamster who really needs an XL cage (bigger than a 40 gallon) with a minimum 12” wheel. I put her in a 40 gallon cage briefly and while she managed ok, her large size made the setup look inhumanely tiny.

Zia’s behavior has always been very good, social and silly. However, as a mama of multiple litters it wouldn’t surprise me if she decided to tell people she didn’t like something with a pinch from teeth the way she did with naughty pups. I’ve never had that experience with her as I understand and respect her preferences and it’s totally possible she’s behave beautifully under any circumstance. That means she’d be best with a person familiar with hamsters and reading their cues so she wouldn’t feel the need to boss someone around or put up with an interaction she doesn’t enjoy.

She’ll make a delightful and very entertaining pet for a hamster savvy home who wants a fluffy buddy that is always up to something. If you live in Oregon or Washington and are interested in Zia send an email to [email protected]. As always there’s no fee for adult hamsters. Also, if you’d like a big or active hamster from me or anyone else and could use a converted Detolf contact me for a referral to the seller.

And just like that, I’ve posted all the babies that we’ll have around here until spring!

I still have a few adult hamsters looking for their perfect homes. One of these hamsters is Wildflower. Wildflower is the mother of the Wild West litter and has officially retired.

She’s beautiful, big and active. Wildflower will make a very entertaining pet for someone as she’s always one of the first hamsters out and about seeing what people are up to. While she’s always been polite and isn’t shy, Wildflower has definite likes and dislikes. Likes include food, treats, snacks, getting out to explore and any enrichment materials. Dislikes include the feeling of being restrained more than briefly and having to witness a person wiping away the “art” she made in her wheel.

For that reason I’d love to have her go to an experienced home with a person good at reading hamster body language and picking up on their tension when they don’t like something.

Wildflower would like to have an XL cage (bigger than a 40 gallon) full of stuff that will accommodate a girl built like a fuzzy brick. Her size means she’ll need a 12” wheel (or bigger).

If you live in Oregon or Washington and are interested in Wildflower send an email to [email protected].

Meet the litter. This litter was raised on squash and pumpkin and to say they’re obsessed is an understatement.

This is Patty Pan. I knew from the moment Patty had a bit of hair that based on s*x and color she’d be my keeper. Usually I pick the pup with the best temperament assuming they’re robust and thriving. Color is very secondary, but at some point I have to make the choices necessary to breed my preferred colors. So, I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best come taming time.

During this photo shoot I thought I’d lucked out beyond all expectation because she was AMAZINGLY well behaved. Possibly the best behaved baby I’ve ever photographed. She let me pet her endlessly, she was easy to maneuver around the cage and was fine with cuddles even with a flashing camera under bright lights. She just sat there with her snacks through everything. Unheard of for a tiny baby.

Fast forward a few days to when I ran out of crunchy snacks. Apparently it’s not me she loves, it’s treats. She really REALLY loves her treats. If she makes pups like herself one day I might be Hungry Hungry Hamstery.

This is Hubbard Squash. Do you have that friend or family member who’s obnoxiously beautiful all the time and from every angle? That’s Hubbard. Stupidly beautiful face. Stupid because I NEED a female from this litter… and he’s not that. And yes, a kitchen utensil was needed to protect my phone from curious baby teeth.

This is Delicata. She had strong opinions about pictures, she wanted to go where SHE wanted and completely disregarded all my attempts to get her in front of the camera. I suspect she’ll grow into an adult who loves her toys, hides and allll the enrichment activities.

This is Sweet Dumpling. I REALLY love this pup, she clearly enjoys life. I love long hair black hamsters with their little white chin, gloves and socks and as they grow they get a smoky grey undercoat that becomes more visible and looks incredibly soft and pet-able.

The queen of blurry pictures is looking for a retirement home!

Anne “Bonny”, named for the notorious pirate, is actually the shyest, most gentle, sweet, undemanding hamster I have. She’s sensitive and knowing she doesn’t really like pictures, I just decide she’s so darn beautiful that blurry is good enough. I sometimes get asked how I get good pictures of hamsters and the answer is that I take thousands, just not with Bonny.

Bonny tends to hide when something around her moves, no matter the source, and takes time to come out on her own. She’s more confident with a confident handler who respects that she’s a sensitive soul and works with her. Due to her sensitivity she was never bred. That said, she has the makings of an excellent pet for the right person.

Once Bonny’s in hand she’s lovely and likes to zip around me, mess with my hair and briefly perch on my chest. Something about her is just ridiculously lovable and sweet.

If you live in the Pacific Northwest and are interested in Bonny please send an email to [email protected] or go to the website and fill out an application. As always, there’s no fee for adult hamsters and I don’t communicate through Instagram.

This is a baby picture of Virgo. At almost a year old he’s still every bit as cute with ears every bit as out of control.

He will be available to a home in Portland, Clackamas, Milwaukee or Beaverton Oregon on breeding contract. What that means is that he’d be your hamster but I may ask to borrow him to make another litter so he needs to go somewhere pretty local.

He’s a naturally good easy boy who comes out to greet you, silly ears pricked, looking for snacks. However, he’s so naturally easy that he doesn’t get a ton of handling so he’d do best with an experienced, confident owner so he’ll settle in to his new home well. As always, there’s no charge for adult hamsters. If you’re interested in Virgo please send an email to [email protected]

PERFECT HOME FOUND!

No fancy pictures and of Ms. Scorpio today because if I wait to get the perfect picture of her I’ll never make this post because this is hard to do. It’s time for this big beauty to retire! It’s a great feeling knowing you’re doing the best thing for your hamster and hamstery when sending a hamster to a retirement home, but I’ll definitely cry over this one. She’ll make some lucky person very happy!

We really hoped for a second litter from her, but at around a year old with no luck, it isn’t in the cards. She’s a very easy hamster, anyone can hold her, no special quirks, sweet as can be, but she’s BIG. Think of a hamster from a pet store and double that size and at around 255g you’ve got the right idea.

She’s not hyperactive, or destructive, or particularly stinky, or difficult in any way, but she’s so big she’ll need supplies to match. Scorpio’s forever home will need a BIG cage (the size of a Christmas tree bin, 75 gallon aquarium or equivalent.) She’ll also need a wheel no smaller than 12”.

If you are interested in Scorpio send an email to [email protected] or go to the website and fill out an application and mention her name.

Who remembers Georgia? She’s spent her young months rejecting all the male hamsters in the hamstery. She just wasn’t impressed.

Well, in a strange twist, a fellow ethical hamstery is in desperate need of cinnamon color hamsters and just at the point she was about to retire we found out a lovely male bred here and owned by carried the gene for cinnamon which could give us pups the color needed. It was a looong shot, but sure enough Georgia wasn’t opposed to male hamsters… just the ones who weren’t Asher! Hence the Tarot Tots (bred and raised by Ginger!) and Georgia really seemed content as a mother.

Now she’s really ready to retire to a pet home! She’s naturally a smidge on the cautious side but very inquisitive. She’s also turned into an active and adventurous hamster who wants to get out and do things. All the things! She’d be a fabulous pet for someone who likes to watch a hamster do all hamster stuff and give them time to roam. In classic female hamster fashion, she won’t be content sitting on a lap for petting for more than a second and doesn’t like to be restrained, but she does want to know what you’re doing and if you have treats for her. She’s the first hamster to come out to visit me every evening and it’s an odd day she doesn’t check in multiple times when I walk by as I putter around the house.

Do you live in the Pacific Northwest, have a large cage (Christmas tree bin sized or bigger) and think Georgia would be a good fit for you? Send me an email at [email protected].

Introducing the

These pups are pretty great, awesome temperaments all around so far! They were allowed to “choose” their own names by messing with cards, some did, others sat around eating or went off to do something naughty instead.

This is Star. She didn’t do anything to any particular card… but look at that face. She’s a Star!

The Story of Hubba-Hubba Hamstery

My sister and I grew up on a farm in Helvetia, Oregon where at the ripe old ages of 9 and 6 we began keeping Syrian hamsters and marketing our own food mix. We named our business Hubba-Hubba Hamsters as we had recently discovered the existence of the “Hubba-Hubba Hieney”, a foam bum-enhancing product we thought very was reminiscent of our hamsters’ lusciously large, round and fluffy physiques.

Fast forward 25 years...

My husband David and I found ourselves foster parents. We were asked for story after story about the years of Hubba-Hubba Hamsters. After plenty of good behavior and a painfully adorable essay on hamster care, we got Nims. When we brought Nims home it took about five minutes to see something just wasn’t right. It turned out that everything we thought we knew about hamsters was wrong. This is where part two of the Hubba-Hubba Hamster journey began.
