FUN FACTS:
INTAKE BEHAVIOR:
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial: 30-Aug-2021
Summary: Loose body, tense when muzzled
ENERGY LEVEL: Bear is reported to have a very high level of energy in the home. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New Hope Only
Recommendations:
No children (under 13)
Recommend no dog parks
Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:
No children: Due to Bear's observed reactivity toward children, exuberance, and potential for redirection of arousal, we recommend an adult only home.
No dog parks: Due to Bear displaying the potential to become overly aroused and bite his caretakers, we recommend keeping Bear out of dog park environments,
Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns, it is recommended that Bear be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Bear to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Bear to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Bear presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges:

On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Bear has been noted by caretakers to become reactive on-leash, barking and pulling toward children, dogs, and select strangers. See handout on On-leash Reactivity.
Strength/leash pulling: Bear pulls hard on leash and may benefit from walking with a front-clip harness or head halter. Please see handout on Leash Manners.

Adoption Summary: This animal needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information.
Bear is on the emergency placement list due to behavioral reasons. Bear has extreme dog reactivity with the potential for redirection making it unsafe for him to remain in the care center. Medically, Bear is apparently healthy. Due to the need for extensive behavior modification, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. Only inquiries made through the completed pre-screener will be forwarded to New Hope partners. Bear's previous owner describes him as excitable and energetic. He will jump up onto people when greeting them and will react by jumping and pulling towards other dogs while on leash. In one instance, he bit his owner on the leg which required treatment. At the care center, Bear has warmed up a bit to select handlers allowing for touch. He would do best in an experienced, adult-only home that will provide reward-based training for his behaviors
