STOP WALKING YOUR DOG!

Are neighbourhood walks good for your dog?

*Is your dog fearful, anxious, stressed or over aroused during your walks?
*is your dog barking and lunging at everything that moves?
* Does your dog have a hair trigger?

If so, then going on these walks will continue to contribute to your dogs reactivity. Not only is a walk for the sake of a walk not benefitting your dog, these walks may actually be making your dog's behaviour worse.

But don't despair, there are options, and I can help.

Online Live Classes

It looks like Spring has finally decided to settle in. Time to get outside with our dogs and enjoy the weather! Every spring there is a surge in leash behaviour calls as dogs get outside to enjoy the sights and smells of the neighbourhood being released from winter’s snow.

Is your dog an enthusiastic walker? Pulling you everywhere in his haste to find the next smell, or p*e on the next tree? Or maybe your dog is hyper vigilant and worried about what may show up around the corner, over reacting to everything that moves?

Both of those scenarios are covered in my next session of Online Live Classes. My Online live Classes are the perfect mix between online learning and live in person classes. Each week we will meet online and cover new information relating to the course topic, you will receive practical skill coaching on new exercise and then you get to practice on your own during the week.

Video submissions of your training sessions is strongly encouraged to get the most out of the class. The How To’s of uploading video will be covered before the course starts.

Spring is just around the corner, yay!! With spring come puppies, Yay!!

If you have just brought a new pup into your home, or if you are waiting for your pup to join your family, here is a list to consider.

**5 Most Important Things to Teach your Pup**
1) Handling her World - Socialization and Emotional Stability
2) Comfortable with Touch - Grooming and Handling
3) Appropriate Play - Bite Inhibition and Self-Control
4) How to access all the Goodies - Dog Drives Reinforcement
5) Independence - Self Soothing and Learning How to be Alone

The first 4 months of a pups life are more influential in shaping future behaviour than any other time in their lives. Their little brains are a-whirl with neural activity, and synapses or connections are being made. The network of all those newly formed synapses allow information to flow. When a pup learns something new those connections that pass information become stronger, and that information is more readily available.

This chaotic activity in a young brain is tremendous, and ultimately cannot be maintained forever. So at about 4 months of age those synapses or connections start to close, and those that are not used frequently disappear while those that are used are kept.

The work that you do during the socialization stage, making all those great associations, is a form of pruning, maintaining those connections to help your pup thrive in his world.

A new puppy in your home is a joyous time, but it is also stressful and hard work and time consuming. If you want help making the best use of this relatively short time of influence, give me a call or check out my Puppy Programs at https://www.prdogz.com/puppy-programs

It is bite prevention week...

Are you concerned that your dog may bite a guest? Is your child treating your dog in a way that has you concerned about safety?
Don't wait until the bite happens to get help, I can teach you how to read your dog's behaviour so you don't ever have to wonder if your dog is comfortable or not, anxious or not, scared or not. You don't need to live with the stress and uncertainty of whether your dog will bite or not.

Remote Consults
Do you want to work 1-on-1 with me but an in-home consultation isn’t for you? Maybe you’re outside my travel radius, maybe your pet would be too stressed to work if I was there, maybe it’s not yet safe for your pet to interact with visitors, or maybe you just don’t want to get out of your PJs (I don’t judge!) That’s where remote consultations come in. These are still behavior consults– private sessions where we work together to address your pet’s behavior issues– but are performed via video chat.

Can remote really work?
People often wonder whether training can be effective if we only meet online – how can I help you if I don’t even meet your pet in person? – but the answer is yes! Remote consulting is growing in popularity worldwide. I have been just as successful collaborating via video chat as the clients with whom I’ve collaborated in person. I can consult on the same issues as my in-home sessions, including but not limited to:
• Fear/ anxiety
• Aggression
• Reactivity
• Resource guarding (people, places, or objects–either from people or other animals)
• Intra- or interspecies conflict
• Integrating pets in a household
• Separation anxiety/ separation distress
• Boredom-based destruction
• Inappropriate elimination
• Inappropriate vocalization
• Self-destructive behaviors
• Nuisance behaviors
• Jumping on people
• Mouthing
• Pulling on leash
• Counter surfing
• Learning cooperative care for vet visits, grooming, taking medication, etc.
• Not listening to basic manners cues

What to expect: The technology
I use Zoom for my remote consultations. Zoom is free and easy to download; it usually takes about 5 minutes. I chose Zoom as my primary platform because it allows me to record your session and send it to you afterwards.
The only other technology you’ll need is a we**am that can be manipulated so I can see around your house and your pet while you’re working with them.

Remote Training Options? Group or Private

All of my Puppy Programs and Solutions Programs are offered as private sessions. If group classes are more your style, I also offer a series of Online Live Classes
• Management Strategies for Leash Reactive Dogs
• Canine Self-Control
• Canine Walking Skills
• Stay

Does your dog struggle when you have company? Has two years of covid restrictions made your dog suspicious of everyone that comes into your home? You are not alone, a lot of dogs are being challenged by the changes in their lives now that restrictions are lifting.

Our sense of freedom and a return to “normal” is not necessarily shared by our dogs. The changes in their routines and patterns may cause anxiety, stress and fear.

If this sounds like your dog, I can help. Contact me for more information on my private in-home learning programs.
