Elsa is waiting for her turn to get asked to the dance! ❤️

She has survived a lot of very hard things and is hoping someone special might fall in love with her and adopt her. ❤️

Check out her bio here:

CampCocker.com/elsa 🥹

Elsa has been so brave and doing hard things! Do you remember this hit-by-car girlie that we rescued from the Long Beach, CA animal shelter?

Her left arm was fractured and it was an open fracture so she also had necrotic bone from a raging infection. 💔

The easy choice would have been an amputation but dogs need their arms to carry 60% of their body weight. Losing a back leg is much easier for a dog to adapt to than to lose a front arm.

We felt like Elsa deserved a chance to keep her arm and through multiple surgeries, an implant plate and bone graft were used. She has been working hard at physical therapy and even though her left arm is shorter than the other arm, it was saved! Whoo hoo! 🎉🎉

She will always walk perfectly imperfect but she can walk! Additionally, saving her harm was helpful to protect her back from getting out of alignment (cockers are prone to back issues).

Spread the word for Elsa and let’s find her an amazing forever home!

Apollo big paws is now ready for his cardiologist work up!

Although it has not yet been six months since his heartworm treatment at the end of September, we do want to learn if there is any long term heart damage from the Caval Syndrome he survived. (Google Caval Syndrome for a deep dive, it’s scary stuff! 😱)

It generally takes up to six months to get a negative heartworm test after treatment. His last test in November showed “mild positive”.

If anyone is just now catching up on Apollo’s rescue story, grab some Kleenex and watch his rescue video:

https://youtu.be/QCSH9swDmZc?si=G-cWpn5-nlEXGUzg

We didn’t know if Apollo could survive his initial injuries because they were so severe.

This boy is one of those special dogs who had the will to live and to not give up. He did so many hard things and all with a positive attitude.

Our amazing rescue partner, Rachel, who runs Cocker Friends Korea, had fostered Apollo. She did the heavy lifting and labor intensive nursing care for him, making daily trips back and forth to the vet in those first six weeks after his initial hospitalization.

Camp Cocker sponsored his expensive medical treatment to get him this far, now he needs your support to get him to the finish line.

Would you like to give Apollo a helping paw?

No donation is too small here:

https://donorbox.org/mattedcockerspaniel-FB

If you would like to catch up on his rescue story and start from the beginning (May 2024) just search his hashtag

There were so many scary times when we thought we might lose him, but he pulled through after each set back. He is a miracle doggie!

We have been asked if he is available for adoption and he will be soon, we just want to make sure he is heartworm free.

We also recently learned that he needs a home with no children. Not because he isn’t friendly, but because if he picks up anything in his mouth that is valuable, you cannot attempt to remove it from his mouth or he will snap and use his teeth.

He ended up at an emergency vet a week ago after picking up a stick on his walk and it got stuck in his mouth (some blood was dripping from what might have been a puncture inside his mouth). When his foster dad tried to remove the stick, Apollo bit him. Yikes!!!! (we moved him to an adult only foster home after that)

We are wondering if Apollo’s resource guarding is related to him being severely starved and near death when he was rescued? (we will have to ask Nami, our volunteer animal communicator, to ask Apollo about this) The good news is that Apollo does not seem to resource guard toys or dog beds or people, so it may be a situation that can be managed by dog savvy adopters.

The Rules of Apollo are, if he picks up something in his mouth, don’t try to take it away.

13/02/2025

Storytime! Grab a cup of ☕️ and have a seat.

Today’s story is about Hera.

Yep, she’s back with Camp Cocker after her new adopters worked with a trainer for ten sessions. 😢

We had committed to a board and training program with a force free dog trainer and only three days later, Hera being the high energy puppy monkey that she is, tore her medial meniscus and ruptured her ACL completely.

Our vet wanted Hera to do a week of crate rest and pain and anti inflammatory meds, but Hera’s limping was getting worse. 😢

One week after this was tried, it was January 7th, the first day of the big Los Angeles fires, and our volunteer drove several hours in the hurricane speed winds to go pick up Hera from the dog trainer and drive her to the emergency hospital.

Hera had surgery that same night. She was so brave for her surgery and has been getting daily p.t.

We hadn’t mentioned this was going on because we wanted to be sensitive towards the people and animal victims of the fires. (we had been asking our supporters to donate to the Pasadena Humane Society, who were at the front lines during the fires)

Hera had her four week post op recheck and x-rays and the knee is healing as hoped for. Hera has four more weeks of activity restriction and then another recheck. (we haven’t even begun to fundraise for her and put her medical bills on credit cards)

She is barely over a year of age. Why has she lost two homes so far?

Here is the issue. Hera was rescued off a rural road in Mongolia at only three months of age. She had zero socialization with living in a domesticated environment.

Although she has worked with several trainers, starting with force free dog trainer Naarka, in Mongolia - Hera is struggling to have confidence in real world situations.

She is not aggressive, but has fear reactivity where if something scares her, she will growl and snap at the nearest thing.

Let me try to describe this a bit better.

Have you ever seen a nice friendly dog get so stressed out by a neighbor’s barking dog on the other side of a fence line? Let’s say you have two friendly dogs on your side of a fence, and a dog on the other side is barking and your dogs are getting over stimulated and stressed out from the other dog’s behavior.

Your two nice dogs can reach a tipping point of being overly stressed that they then redirect their energy to start a fight with one another.

It would not be accurate to label this as aggression, this is a reaction to stress and dogs can reach a tipping point where they redirect their frustration to whomever is nearest to them.

Some dogs have a low threshold of what stress they can handle (like Hera) and some dogs have a high threshold of what stress they can handle.

Because Hera missed out on puppy socialization in her first twelve weeks of life (the most formative age for socializing), she has a low threshold for being easily stressed in normal domesticated environments.

Simple things like hearing someone knock on the door, or hearing a car door slam from outside, can put Hera over her stress threshold.

She redirects her stress by growling, baring her teeth or snapping at the nearest person.

She needs a forever home that is a bit of a bubble environment, where she has room to run and exercise and feel safe. She needs to live on a ranch in Montana or Colorado or somewhere that is completely fenced in and outside world stimuli is minimal.

We would like to sponsor a force free dog trainer for the right adopters who have the environment that could work for Hera. She needs a home with no children of course, but she will also do better if she has a home with a confident large breed dog to be Hera’s leader.

Her situation is so sad because she reminds us of Betty’s puppies, in terms of her size. Sadly, she had the exact opposite first twelve weeks of life.

While Betty’s puppies were getting heavily socialized with real world experiences to help them to build confidence, Hera spent her first twelve weeks as a stray. 💔

We know this is going to be a long shot, but we are asking the Camp Cocker Rescue Village to spread the word far and wide for Hera.

Do you know anyone that lives in a more rural or quiet environment? Not a typical suburban or city environment. An environment where Hera can be set up for success in a little bubble, where she will have less stress stimuli from the outside world.

Please share Hera’s story and her bio here:

Sweet senior, Milo will steal your heart! ❤️

Milo is ready for his forever home!

He was rescued from the Long Beach, CA animal shelter on 11/06/24 after being hit by a car.

We rushed him immediately to a 24/7 hospital where he had surgery.

He is now walking so well and whomever adopts him will just need to commit to weekly physical therapy for the next three months, to make sure he gets to his full potential.

He may be around nine to ten years of age, is potty trained and is friendly with people and other dogs.

He is the sweetest boy and someone very lucky will get to adopt him.

Milo has done hard things and now it’s his turn to find the bestest forever home!

Our sweet senior girl, Violet was just discharged from the hospital for an emergency eye surgery.

What began two weeks ago as an ulcer on her eye and a growth on the eye lid that was now scratching her eye, turned into us having to make the difficult decision yesterday of putting a sixteen year old dog under anesthesia was worth the risk.

Violet had been seeing an ophthalmologist and a conservative approach was tried first, involving medicated eye drops five times a day.

Violet is surprisingly in such good health for a senior dog (a result of proactive healthcare and no kibble, she only gets fresh food for the highest nutritional impact).

Her eye was in pain and although we were nervous about surgery, Violet is so resilient and did amazing!

We are so proud of our perfectly imperfect girl and how she is not afraid to do hard things!

Would you like to support Violet’s medical bills today with a donation?

Better yet, click “monthly” and help Violet for the rest of her senior years!

Donating is super easy, right here:

Are you Nikki’s forever Valentine?

Nikki is ready for her forever home.

Meet beautiful Nikki, she came from a shelter in Riverside county, CA on 12/20.

She seems to be a classic pandemic puppy, young and under socialized.

The shelter had her labeled as “proceed with caution” because she panics when strangers handle her.

This girlie 100% needs adopters who:

- have no children or elderly persons in the home

- are enthusiastic about immediately committing to working with a force free dog trainer (this girl deserves more than DIY training, she needs professional help)

- are prepared to be patient and not rush Nikki, she is a dog that needs to give consent before interacting

She doesn’t even know what a leash walk is, whomever bought her as a puppy really failed this girl. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Puppies are a huge commitment of time, energy, training and socializing. Nikki is still a young dog but has missed out on all of that important work that her first people didn’t put into her.

Ahhhh! This is not the first pandemic puppy that we’ve taken in and sadly, we doubt it will be the last.

Once Nikki feels comfortable with a new person, she can be very sweet. It’s her stranger danger that is going to make her face challenges to adoption.

If you feel like you are that rare adopter who is prepared for the training commitment and you have a home environment that is not busy with a lot of visitors, then please check out Nikki’s bio here:

Cutie patootie alert! 🥰

Beautiful puppy mill survivor is hoping someone will give her a chance! ❤️

Please help spread the word for middle aged lady, May.

She was rescued from a life of horrors in a puppy mill.

Although the mill was in Busan, South Korea - the living conditions were as cruel as a typical American puppy mill. 💔😭

Puppy mill dogs are some of the sweetest and most rewarding dogs to adopt. They are shy, have potty training challenges to overcome and can frustrate many adopters.

At the same time, these little works-in-progress doggies can make your heart feel so much love. They look to you to be kind and patient because they’ve not been used to human kindness.

May has dry eye from years of neglect and gets medicated eye drops three times a day.

If you are interested in giving May a chance to know what life can be like where she can feel safe, well cared for and loved, check out her bio here:

CampCocker.com/may

Serious adoption inquiries will want to read adoption process here:

CampCocker.com/adoptionprocess

We do not know how old she is but should age really be how we evaluate if a dog has value? The number one question that rescuers are asked is “how old”? (May could be nine to ten, but that is a guess)

We would like our potential adopters to have open hearts and not use age as a reason to disqualify a dog to adopt.

Can you imagine if we, as humans were walking around casually asking each other “how old are you” in order to evaluate someone’s worth?

A dog’s value should not be tied to their age.

A nice dog is a nice dog, at any age, right?

Spread the word for May and let’s change her life by finding her the BEST forever home of all time!

An adoption story that will melt your heart!

Some adopters that had already completed the screening process, were looking to adopt after January 20th. (due to a brief trip mid month)

A week before Christmas we had just rescued two shelter dogs within days of each other. Simon was one of those dogs and we were in a pickle about where to put him because we had no foster homes or Rover sitters with an open spot.

We asked our adopters if they would consider fostering Simon, just to get us through the holidays and they said yes.

Well guess what happened?

That’s right, Simon worked his magic on them and they fell in love. They asked if they could adopt him and we all had a happy dance! 💃🕺

Simon has a new name to go along with his fresh start. You can now refer to him as Luka! (so cute)

We love a happy beginning like this, when the adopters had no idea about who the dog we asked them to foster was going to look like, act like or any details about potty training.

They simply answered the call to be of service and look how amazing that turned out for them. We LOVE this!

We are so grateful for people that are willing to give of their time and to be inconvenienced by fostering a dog for us.

🎉

Sweetest boy Milo cannot stop wagging his tail anytime someone pets him. Awwww! 🥹

Milo is ready for his forever home!

Whomever says a nine to ten year old dog is “too old” to adopt, is missing out BIG TIME with this sweetheart of a dog. So many potential adopters will never know that they are passing up what could have been the love of their lives when they set an age limit on dogs they will consider.
