NorCal Sheltie Rescue Welcome to the NorCal Sheltie Rescue page! We rescue, rehabilitate and re-home Shelties who have lost their homes for a variety of reasons.
(11)

We take in and place homeless purebred Shelties in approved homes throughout the entire Northern California area, from Bakersfield north to the Oregon border and from the Pacific coast to the state line. Rescue Shelties are first placed in volunteer foster homes to prepare them for adoption. Foster care includes vet exams, vaccinations, any necessary treatment, regular exercise, and temperament ev

aluation. All dogs are spayed or neutered prior to placement. NorCal Sheltie Rescue screens and approves all applications prior to placing a rescue dog in a permanent home. Once the dog is placed, frequent follow-ups are done to insure that the match is successful for both the dog and the adopter.

Well said.

The 3-3-3 rule is a guideline for transitioning an adopted dog into its new home and helping it to settle in. It suggests that the first three days should be used for adjusting to its new surroundings, the next three weeks for training and bonding, and the first three months for continued socialization and training.

Something to think about.

Great news: Ritchie has found his permanent home with Julie! He's back in northern California and acclimating quickly to his new environment. He'll have a very active life on a property with acreage and livestock, plus an owner who understands herding breeds and enjoys training. Lots of exercise and fun times are in store for this boy!
Many thanks to all of you who helped us on this journey. Your posts and encouraging messages were appreciated! And thanks to Carol, his first adopter, for recognizing that Ritchie needed more than she could give him.

Dear people,
It’s me again: Ritchie! I’m still waiting for my forever home! Remember, I was a stray, wandering the streets and picked up by a shelter. NorCal Sheltie Rescue took me in and they’re looking for just the right home for me. Here’s a list of my positive qualities:
• Young
• Healthy
• Handsome
• Housetrained
• Crate trained
• Neutered
• Microchipped
• Up to date with vaccinations
• Sleep through the night
• Gentle with food and treats
• Affectionate

I’m still learning, though, and I would love to go to dog school. An experienced owner could really help me become the dog I want to be. Here’s what I’m working on:
• Walking on leash
• Paying attention to owner
• Not reacting to distractions

As I said before in my first post, my best quality is that I love people and I’m very free with my affection. My ideal home has a large fenced yard, no other pets, no young children (I might want to chase them), and people who are willing to train me. I promise to give back lots of love in return.

If you’d like to adopt me, please contact my rescuers at [email protected] for more information. Please consider me and recognize that I’m a work in progress, with the potential of becoming a really great dog!

Warmly,
Ritchie

BAD NEWS. Ritchie's San Diego area adoption has not worked out. He's a large boy, 51 lbs., with some fear issues to be worked through. It comes out in leash aggression. He needs to learn how to play nice with smaller creatures too. Ritchie is loving, affectionate and a wonderful companion to his human. He may be younger than three years old (he came to us from a shelter where he was brought in as a stray). Current on vaccinations and is neutered. Rides well in the car. We really need help from the Sheltie loving public and from the dog loving community at large. Please get in touch if you can help with giving Ritchie a chance at a good life! [email protected]

LOST Sheltie SACRAMENTO Midtown!
We were shopping at the Co-Op, my hands full of groceries and when I opened my car door, something must had scared my Toy Size, Sable and White Sheltie, because he jumped out and ran for it. His name is Max, he is really mahogany and white, 2 year old male. He is quite small for a Sheltie, he was a rescue, he is very afraid of adult male put loves women. Be very careful because he will bite. He has on a military colored vest with his rabies tags. Please notify us through Craigslist. [email protected]
Thank You.

Someone has posted that NCSR currently has an online store. We do not. We closed it a few years back due to lack of volunteers to operate it.

We're not getting any interest in Ritchie. This is very concerning!

Dear People,

My name is Ritchie and I’m looking for a home! After wandering the streets, I was picked up by the shelter and I spent some time there before NorCal Sheltie Rescue discovered me. I’m young but I don’t know my birthday (the shelter says I’m 2 years old). I’m a big boy, 54 pounds, and I think I’m a Sheltie, with beautiful, blended colors. I’m neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped.

When I was homeless, I became a little defensive around other dogs. Foster mom says I need lots of training to build my confidence around them and not overreact. Another fault of mine, she says, is that I like to chase cats and critters. I seem to be very interested in all the new distractions and I also need help in learning to walk politely on leash. My best quality, though, is that I love people and I’m very free with my affection.

I can’t wait to find my permanent home. Ideally, it would be a home with a large fenced yard, no other pets, no young children (I might want to chase them), and people who are willing to train me. I promise to give back lots of love in return.

If you’d like to adopt me, please contact my rescuers at [email protected] for more information. Thank you for reading my story. Please consider me and recognize how much potential I have for becoming a really great dog!

Warmly,
Ritchie

If anti anxiety meds will help your pup with loud obnoxious noises now is the time to get that prescription filled!

NOW is the time to secure fencing, make sure your gates latch, refill those anxiety medications, put a tag with info on the collar, ensure microchip information is up to date (or get one! $24 at SCAC) .

Don't wait until July 3rd, the fireworks are coming.

Good advice.

Dedicated to my rescue boy, Bailey. RIP 7/2/23

When you’ve ran your last mile where the sun always shone,
And that ball you so loved is now tattered and worn
When the sound of your voice scares the mailman no more,
And your hair covers – still – my clothes, couch and floor.
When your bed in the corner is too far to lay down,
And you’re tired of those tricks that turned hearts inside out.
When you know I’m not ready, but you still have to leave,
I promise my memories are happy to grieve.
So now my heart breaks at this final goodbye,
And as you cross Rainbow Bridge, I will love you and cry.

Hi Friends of Snickers!
A long overdue update on our little guy. . .
Two months ago Snickers was taken to Pacific Vet clinic in Santa Cruz for gallbladder removal surgery due to a life threatening gall bladder mucocele. His surgery was postponed due to dehydrating diarrhea. He was hospitalized overnight for fluids. Another ultrasound was run while he was hospitalized with no mucocele diagnosis. He was put on medication and sent home for a month. On a follow-up visit another ultrasound confirmed a mucocele. Complications were noted; enlarged adrenal glands, an unhealthy liver and advancing kidney disease.
Due to the possibility that Snickers may have Cushing's Disease (which makes it difficult to heal after major surgery) as well as other underlying issues we decided to postpone surgery and try medical management. Snickers was put on Urosidiol and Omega -3 fish oil, along with his low fat prescription canned food.
Thanks to your help, his hospital stay and expensive ultrasounds, specialist visits and bloodwork have been mostly covered. Thank You! To properly treat his gall bladder the underlying cause has to be identified so that correct medical management can be applied. This is why we are asking for your help to fund the necessary diagnostics, e.g., vet visits, lab tests, and ultrasounds. As it is, Snickers’s prescription food and meds run over $200/month.
Snickers has another appointment coming up to review his case, run more bloodwork to help assess him for a Cushings ACTH test and to track the progression of his kidney disease.
It's entirely likely that Snickers could also need other tests and treatment, but the ACTH test, bloodwork and visit alone will cost $700. Along with his monthly food and current meds costing over $200 A month, he may also need ongoing monitoring and retesting to see if we can successfully treat his condition without surgery. With your help, we would love to raise $2000 for Snicker's ongoing needs.

We’ve been so focused on Snickers and his gall bladder issue that we haven’t formally introduced you to his buddy, Hershey. These two were picked up by animal control in South San Jose in late December, and when no one claimed them, foster mom extraordinaire, Rhonda, took them in to foster for us. Hershey has health challenges too. He’s obese and suffers from very sensitive digestion. Rhonda has been challenged to find what he will tolerate without triggering diarrhea. The low fat food plan he’s on (one she found through trial and error) seems to be helping. Their initial lab results were strange in that they almost mirrored each others, except Hershey’s doesn’t show signs of late stage gall bladder disease, but he may benefit from being tested for Cushing Disease. Hershey was practically dancing off the walls when Snickers came home from his two day hospital stay. We think they’ve been together a long time. Easter photos of Hershey (wearing the black bow tie) & Snickers (with the gray tie) show you their sweet handsomeness.

Looks like some good guidelines on feeding low fat foods. I like that they’ve included non prescription foods. If you have input that would be helpful on any of these, I’d love to hear from you.

Some veterinarians recommend switching to a low fat dog food. To help find the best low fat dog food, here’s what you need to know.
