On Monday July 29th I heard that there may be a hurt dog at a local business. I did not have much information about the situation, other than she had been there for at least three days. When I arrived at 8:30 pm it was a dark and the area was not lit. I did not see a dog at first and was about to leave, when I saw a tail wag in a patch of grass a few feet from me. I was shocked as I got closer and
realized the hurt dog was a gentle Pit Bull, with a severely damaged leg. She could not get up at all, but she reached out her face in the friendliest way. Injured dogs can lash out from pain, but my fear went away as I reached out my hand and she licked it. I was at a total loss as what I could do for her. I knew that her injuries were bad and I could not take on all of her care. I called a local rescue, with tears running down my face. They did not hesitate for a second and offered to take on her vet bills (even though they did not have the funds on hand to help her). For The Love Of Strays knew that she deserved a second chance at whatever cost. I place her in the back of my car and prayed for the best. After I got her in the light of my car I realized that her entire back was covered in blood and scabs. I wept and shook as I drove away with her. I knew her pain had to be insane and I would not be able to get her to a vet until the morning. My five year old daughter was in the car and she gently pet her head for a bit, before she said, "I think her name is Cupcake mom". I thought is was the perfect name for such a sweet dog. We took Cupcake to the vet first thing in the morning and found out that the bone in her leg was completely broken in two. Not only that, but her hip was totally dislocated. Since the leg was broken and it has been dislocated for more than 24 hours, it was impossible for the vet to put it back in place. This meant that Cupcakes needs two separate operations. She had her first operation Friday August 2nd. She had a pin placed in her broken bone. We will wait six weeks for that to heal and then she will have her second operation to relocate her hip. In the mean time we also found out she is full of hook worms and heart worm positive. Cupcake has a world of hurt right now, but we are doing everything we can to help her. Cupcake was a throw away dog that has had many litters of puppies. She was found wearing a beat up collar. More just a piece of fabric that was riddled away by the sun and time. However, that is the past and she has not let it get her down at all. Just like the night I found her with a wagging tail, that tail still wags no matter what. She loves to give kisses and has never whined or made a peep from her pain. She still can not walk and won't get a chance to until her hip is fixed, but she is still happy. For The Love Of Strays is in need of help to cover her ongoing medical bills. We need to secure the money to get Cupcake her second surgery. The one which will allow her to walk again. I will keep updates about Cupcake on this page. This will be her journey back to walking and hopefully a new furever home. The kind of home she deserves. If you can donate to Cupcake, please follow the link below. For The Love of Strays is an amazing 501C3 rescue. Thank you and sweet kisses from Cupcake
