It took me a few days to get my thoughts together. Saturday was very overwhelming, and I want to tell you all about it. We left Heber-Overgaard at 8:30am to meet the pups before it got too hot. The drive took over an hour, with 45 minutes down dirt roads on long stretches of nothingness. This is the true definition of living “off-grid.” It’s a wonder anyone ever found these dogs, honestly.
When we pulled in, you could hear the dogs barking like mad right away. Some were even getting into fights - not surprising since all our 4mos have cuts and scabs. And the smell when I opened the car door… a mix of urine, waste, body odors, and who knows what else. The 2 humans living here occupy a pre-fabricated shed with no air conditioning, running water or sewage. Any electricity is supplied by a long string of generators with gas cans strewn about. The yard where the dogs spend all their time is so much smaller than photos do justice. There has never been a place I visited in person that I felt more certain we had to get every one out we could.
And then I heard the screaming puppy. He was in the shed doorway, and he wasn’t supposed to be there. I thought we got all the little ones last weekend. He had been running around with all the big dogs, and it’s a miracle he wasn’t hurt. We got 7 more dogs out Saturday. I went back yesterday to get 6 more puppies off-property - the last of the 4 month olds. They still need fosters or other rescues. We really need other rescues to help, especially with the cattle dog pups. I’m hoping our pleas are answered soon.
As of today, we have taken 32 dogs off-property. There are 14 adults left, and it was devastating to leave them behind. Animal Control is letting the owners keep 3 dogs that are spayed / neutered. We still need to get 11 adults out of there. They need fosters or other rescues. Please share and please fill out our foster forms if you can help. They are good, sweet dogs, though some are pretty shy. I know them a little bit now, and I can tell you about them. Comment with any questions on these pups and I’ll tell you what I saw.
Lastly, a HUGE THANK YOU!!! We hit our 5k match after the last post!!! So, so grateful to everyone who has contributed, and relieved for these pups. Any continued funds for their care will still help since this is such a massive undertaking and we still have 40+ other huskies in our care, but I am so grateful to all who have supported us!
