It’s Guinea Pig Appreciation Week this week. We are certainly appreciating having these lovely piggies to stay while their owners are on holiday 🌽
In most animals, there is an enzyme in the body that can use sugar to produce ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) which is then used to make collagen, an important component of connective tissue. Guinea pigs lack this enzyme, but still need ascorbic acid for collagen formation. This is why they need Vitamin C to be provided through their diet. Bell peppers are an excellent source, and most guinea pigs absolutely love them. Some fruit and veg shops will give you bell peppers for free for your piggies, if they are slightly discoloured or damaged and not able to be sold.
