My favourite things to pick up to share with Opie are pastured eggs (for the yolk, membrane + shell), organic bones (for a chew or a broth) seasonal veg (to use the stems/leaves + leftovers for toppers) and wild seafood (we love those omega 3s) 🥚🍖🥦🦪

Here’s some Fall weekend wellness based activities to do and share with your pup:

Cook bone broth 🦴
Stew apples 🍎
Get your face in the sunshine ☀️
Share raw honey, crushed garlic and oil of oregano 🌱
Forest bathe 🌳
Cold dip 🌊
Sip decaf green tea 🍵
Roast pumpkin flesh + seeds 🎃
Take long strolls near foliage 🍁
Nap and cuddle often 🤗💤🐶

Listen, I love pumpkin 🎃 but it’s overkill with our dogs on the best of days so when it manages to eclipse the many delicious nutritious seasonal foods that are available in the fall it makes me feel the need to create a reminder!

Pumpkins are great but we’re all about diversifying that microbiome 🦠

Brussels Sprouts- good either steamed and roasted or simply collect the ends and leaves you typically discard, steam them and mash them for a topper.

Cranberries- low sugar and high in vitamin C, manganese, vitamin E + K1! Best blistered in a delicious sauce (check the blog for our sauce recipe up tomorrow)!

Beets- beautiful liver cleansers and are best served in grain free baking, sauces, mash or fermented into a potent liquid.

Swiss chard- a gorgeous deep bitter green which is also great at cleansing the liver- chard can be added to any green smoothie, roasted tomato sauce or just sautéed (with lemon, garlic or other vegetables to make more enticing).

Rutabaga- the marriage of a turnip and a cabbage- sweet, cruciferous and high in fibre. Best served as a mash whipped with coconut cream or a dollop of grass fed butter.

There’s lots of amazing local produce out there. Find it, experiment with it, cook it and share it.

Last week a client let me know a Global Pet Food rep told her sprouted seeds would help defend her dog against DCM and I almost cried because not only was is entirely misguided; she believed it!

I felt compelled to write this post because it’s dangerous to have uneducated individuals with a love of animals misconstrue their limited knowledge within the confines of a McDonald like corporation with actual nutrition education.

That’s not to say however that everyone who works at a pet food store doesn’t have some knowledge of animal well being or that they’re not trying to help but when we’re dealing with something as vital as nutrition or informing clients on how to support their pets and understand what actually causes DCM it is as comical as going to the family planning aisle at Shoppers and being encouraged to have the salesperson perform a Pap smear.

If you’re serious about optimizing your dogs well being and understanding the science behind it please do yourself a favour and consult with a canine nutritionist or holistic veterinarian. Because you wouldn’t get a pap at Shoppers 👩🏻‍⚕️😷❤️‍🩹

Fall is right around the corner and even though it’s our FAVOURITE season, it can usher in a host of issues with our pups as we transition to all things autumn.

Common problems I see in my practice as the leaves fall are allergies, joint issues (hello barometric pressure drop!), colds (or kennel cough) and other mystery issues that seem to correlate with more time indoors and exposure to scented products (sorry pumpkin spice candles!)

All of these things can cause a lot of stress for you and your pup but with a little bit of know-how can be totally manageable, preventable and even reversible! Book in for a consultation this month and set yourself up for a smooth entry into the colder months 🍂🎃❤️‍🩹
