‼️‼️ SHARE FAR AND WIDE FOR THE SAKE OF THESE ANIMALS FINDING RESCUE AND VOLUNTEER HELP‼️‼️
Yesterday I visited Chesterfield SC, Animal Services. It's bad 💔💔. There are 4 women, one in her 70s, trying to care for a 100+ animals. Chesterfield is an open intake shelter. That means, they have to take any and all animals brought in by the public. Recently a change in staff occurred, leaving the shelter extremely short handed. The 4 current employees are busting their butt to provide care for all of the animals. I was there most of the day yesterday, and not one of them stopped for lunch or to take a much needed break. The current problem isn't the employees, it's lack of help from the county officials and residents. For years, Chesterfield County has delt with an overwhelming overpopulation problem of animals. Lack of spay and neuter from residents, lack of programs and updated ordinances from the county, leaves this shelter a dumping ground for irresponsible pet owners. Diseases is running rampant due to overcrowding and lack of maintenance. The floors in a once million dollar shelter now sit porous, bare concrete in most areas, due to lack of maintenance maintaining. Many kennels sit rusted from cleaning agents, and need polls and wire replaced. I visit a lot of shelters, and I am sadden to say, this one has regressed 10 years or more in the last few years. Meanwhile in 2025, other government run shelters move forward with pride, providing a safe haven for the animals in their care, a maintained environment, and public solutions that help control the overpopulation problem. We all know, you cannot rescue and adopt your way our of an overpopulation problem . The only solution is to spay and neuter and implement ordinances. Without these two solutionsin place, the overpopulation of animals continues to increase year after year. Repeating an endless worsening cycle of unnecessary suffering, wasted tax dollars for euthanasia, and a stressful work environment for employees. Currently a fact well Proven by Chesterfield County.
Let me just repeat myself again, this is not current employee or Animal Controls fault. This is a County/resident problem. At this time, there is many needs at the shelter, but the biggest need is rescue and volunteer help. Volunteers from both inside and outside the county. Residents have to step up and help offer solutions for the problem in their own County. These animals do not deserve this. VOLUNTEER! The staff is begging for volunteer help. They cannot not do this alone. I’m begging you, if you’ve ever volunteered at this shelter, rescued from this shelter, donated, or adopted….. please give them another chance. I know many of you have had bad experience under prior leadership, but that has now changed. The current temporary director wants the help, she wants to make things better, but it has to happen NOW. Please take 2 hours out of your schedule once a week to volunteer at this shelter. The animals and employees desperately need the help. Its going to take a village, but I know with help from the public, this shelter can once again be what it once was. The animals need you. Every resident and Government official of Chesterfield County SC needs to make the shelter a priority immediately. I cannot stress enough these animals need help, and I urge you all to go help and see for yourself.
