Picked up this little dude straight out of the street. Good thing for him he's pretty healthy and should be getting his first shot this week and should be fixed very soon. That means he'll be ready for a home.

Marshmallow Is one of almost two dozen kitties waiting for adoption right now! We have a goal of 12 kittens home by October 1st. Can we do it?

HAPPY NATIONAL BLACK CAT DAY!

Gus and Luna Are looking for their forever homes. They were both bottle babies and extra sweet and will do great in homes with kids, cats, and even cat-savvy dogs. Both love to play, and would prefer an active and engaging household.

Luna is a courtesy post for another rescuer. She is 11 weeks, spayed, with her rabies and first distemper shot.

Gus is being neutered tomorrow. He is up to date on his FVRCP vaccines, and will receive his rabies shot, and a microchip.

URGENT

ADOPTERS NEEDED!

As with many places right now, intake is closed and we are overwhelmed with kittens in need of homes... in the next week many of these babies will be getting fixed and will be ready to go. Some of them are already good to go!

We have some big and exciting changes coming in the next month, and while everything is up in the air it is absolutely imperative that these babies find homes. Transport is available pretty much anywhere within reason for approved adopters. Yes, we have helped transport kittens to Canada and via airplane!

These are just a few of the kittens available currently in Foster. We would love to see them find incredible homes. Application and adoption fees apply!

There are a handful of kittens that didn't get their photos taken, but we will hope to post them very soon as well. Unfortunately we haven't had time to update our Petfinder as we are hoping to move to shelter love as our adoption platform.

Petit Lydia is full of spice. Yet she still wants to cuddle and be your friend, especially if you have food. Don't be put off by her growling - she doesn't enjoy being picked up or told what to do, and you probably don't either so maybe you can sympathize ;)

She loves her toys and enjoys wet kitten food and will happily join you on the couch. She's curious and fun and definitely wants her own home.

Lydia is a petite girl and we expect that she will stay small. She is fixed and has her shots and is ready to go! Please let me know if you'd be interested in adopting and I'll introduce you.

Some days are stressful and other days help you remember why you rescue.

After handling Kitty chores and my own chores, I received a very nice message from a adopter who told me how very much in love they are with their Kitty that I placed with them last year.

Shortly after, I received a message from a rescue friend about a kitty whose owner had passed away. I don't always have space or time to make these kinds of rescues happen, but I was going to try my best.

Not only was I able to pick up this sweet boy from a really awful situation, thanks to Bonnie & an incredibly caring Deputy Coroner, but he was also able to visit our vet friend Margaret, who just happened to arrange his foster as well! The foster, who happens to work at the clinic, fell in love, so we hope it's a match!

If you'd like to pitch in a little bit for his vet bills and to cover my gas for the day, that would be wonderful. He will need a dental and his shots. His owner took incredibly good care of him otherwise

Screamy McDreamy (NOT his legal name) is finally out of the woods with his feeding schedule and overall health. He is about half the size of his siblings so it may be a couple weeks before he is able to get fixed, but he's already telling me he's ready for a great home!

Another unique characteristic of this Little Tike is he has a pretty serious kink in his tail. Legend has it that this kind of harmless deformity is proof of reincarnation, and the fact that he once served royalty as a ring bearer.

I'm pretty sure he won't hold still to keep track of your jewelry, but he's really good at rubbing on your feet and getting lots of pets. Make sure to feed regularly though because otherwise you risk getting a nip to remind you of all his favorite snacks.

$5 Friday URGENT Request!

Friendos, Cat Fam:

This is Iris.

Iris came to us in June, and is now enjoying time with a foster fam in Ft. Wayne.

Iris has had fluid on the belly for weeks now, but NO OTHER PROBLEMS. She's happy and playful, but we need to get to the bottom of her issues so she can be ready for adoption.

When she first came in, blood tests were done, but were inconclusive. We tried a few rounds of FIP meds with NO change. We try to draw fluid last weekend but turned out Iris needs an ultrasound to make this task possible.

That's where we need your help.

She already has a bill of over $125 from the bloodtest. Today's bill will be nearly $300.

We're asking for help paying her $425 in medical bills as we could REALLY use the help this kitten season. Adoptions are slow and we spend a bundle on just food and litter. We just need to be sure Iris is taken care of fully before we can even spay her.

We made our debut in public at a PetSmart tonight! Lance might be blind but he is very brave. He'll be ready for adoption soon. Must be adopted with another kitten or into a home with other cats! That is the only consideration needed for his condition. He gets upset if he can't find a buddy.

Let me put this simply. My rescue fee does not cover my expenses for the cats in my rescue. It may not even cover the basic vetting that I get at a rescue discount. Add in dewormer, flea treatments, and the fact that all kittens need their vaccines when they come to me... plus the cost of kitten food, litter, and of course medicine and additional treatment if the cat needs it.

And I transport. Oftentimes my adopters will donate extra to help me cover my expenses but I don't always ask for that unless I'm transporting long distance. So if you want to know where your money is when you donate to a rescue, this is where it goes.

There is no money to be made in rescue. If we are good at what we do, and lucky, we eventually break even. But even that requires donations and assistance, which is deeply deeply appreciated.

Right now, funds are what is needed most! As always, thank you so much for helping me help the kittens.

When you run a rescue, nothing happens quickly...except emergencies.

But some of the best things do take time. For example, the little orange kitten in this photo is Rocket. He is on a regimen that will keep him from getting sicker while he gains weight. When he's over 2 pounds, we can consider if he still needs an enucleation. Trying to perform such a surgery before he reaches that weight is incredibly risky. We only do it when there is active risk of sepsis.

Yes, I know it looks scary, but he is otherwise a happy, healthy normal kitten who enjoys playing, loves hanging off the scratching post, eats his wet food like a champ, and usually uses his litter box. We are super fortunate to have a couple of vets who understand the needs of these special kittens. Fortunately, Rocket's other eye is just fine so he will have vision.

The other Kitty in this photo is Hannah. She came into our rescue in September and into my home in October. She was painfully shy and I was afraid she would never come around. Right after this photo was taken though, she rolled over for a belly rub. This is her now. She also really loves kittens. She's not quite a year old and she's absolutely stunning and has become a friendly, sweet girl.

Hannah is available for adoption and Rocket will be in the next month or so. They would be great together, or with other kittens. Hannah will need some time to adjust, but she will absolutely reward you with gentle affection and almost no spice. She truly is the most mild-mannered Calico I've ever met! She especially loves other female cats.

For some little ones dinner is a whole body experience!

This little guy was picked up by a friend who does tnr. We've helped her with many kittens in the past as her focus is mainly the adult kitties. He has a gigantic eyeball from an upper respiratory that went untreated. He's getting treatment now but it probably is way too late to save the eye. It doesn't matter though - he is plenty spunky!

We will wait until he is safely of a weight to be fixed and have his eye removed. No matter how grotesque it looks this is something we do not rush unless the eye is clearly infected.

So Toast is coming back to our rescue next week through no fault of his own. I am happy to explain why to any interested and qualified adopter!

Toast is a 10 month old neutered male, up-to-date on his vaccinations, free of fleas and dewormed. He is a loving and playful boy who would do fine in a home with other confident cats who enjoy playing.

If you drop something harmless on the floor, leave it for a little while. Kittens enjoy the stimulation and adventure of something new and different and it helps boost their confidence to encounter things randomly.

I interrupt the flow of Edwin photos to bring you this chunky....meet Gus! He's 11 days old, And while we have only known each other eight days, I can tell you he has grown immensely.

This week, we received very generous assistance from some of our rescue friends . Seriously, we cannot thank Josephs Legacy enough. We will always support other rescues as much as we are able, whether that is transport, donations, or even referring candidates for adoption. Rescue isn't a competition. We are all in this for the animals!

The Kitten Express is on the road, and it's been a very big weekend for us! 🥰🥰

Today, two of our foster kittens are headed home, and a foster puppy!! We also sent a third kitten to another rescue for adoption so that we could keep up with all of the new rescues.

One of our rescue partners is currently caring for one little one, plus a senior. We also have two chunky bottle babies that should be weaning very soon, and one Edwin, who is a big fan of the wet food! There are also a few more kittens we would like to help in the next few weeks as well as numerous teenagers who still need a home.

Folks very generously set us up for kitten season, but we are already almost out of canned food and halfway through our supply of formula. Healthy babies eat a lot!

We've got a bonker!

This little baby doesn't have a name yet, but he's about 3 weeks old. A kind Good Samaritan and her friend found him in an alley all alone under a brick. We're not sure but mother may have stashed him there, but he had visible bite wounds and a broken arm. Sometimes a mama cat can accidentally injure her own kittens when moving them if she's in a panic!

We cleaned up the wounds and made sure he wasn't infected and got him on some antibiotics just to be safe. Now he has a splint for his little broken arm. And he's eating kitten mush!!

We have had some very generous donors in the last couple of weeks who have made it possible for us to take care of several bottle babies and young kittens. Thank you!

HAPPY RESPECT YOUR CAT DAY!

Here are 5 easy ways you can respect YOUR cat

1. Do not scruff: You are NOT their mother, and it is actually painful and even dangerous to scruff an adult cat. Holding the scruff may be something you do when administering medicine, but even that is not always best practice. Scruffing should only be done in emergencies ie. keeping your cat from injuring itself.

2. Do not pick up you cat to move them from room to room: This is a hard habit to break, and some cats do love to be picked up and held, but imagine how you would feel if you were always being moved from place to place...

3. Do not yell at your cat: Scaring your cat isn't a good way to build trust, and the cat learns nothing from this. Yes, it's hard, and sure most of us do it, but trying is part of building respect.

4. Avoid the spray bottle: Again, why make your animal fearful? Try clicker training instead. Negative punishment systems often yield a more fearful animal.

5. Set them up for success: Don't expect your cat to know what you want in an instant. Don't want a scratched up couch? Don't get the attractive leather. Give your cat things to scratch instead. Use deterrants. Don't use your hand as a toy and expect not to get bit or scratched. Again, if you don't want the behavior, set up an alternate from the start.

I hope these suggestions help you build stronger and more positive relationships with your animals. Cats are amazing companions, smart and loving, and if you respect them then your relationship with them will be all the more incredible!

(I am reposting to my rescue page in case other people are inclined to share this. Something really horrible happened here yesterday in this town, but the reality is that it happens all over all the time.)***

On Tuesday, these kittens were healthy and safe in what appeared to be a clean home, with a person who said that they were not going to send them off before vaccinations at least...

But before Saturday at 9AM, all 6 arrived, wet, cold, and dead at Animal Care Alliance. We were having our vaccine clinic and the team QUICKLY jumped to action to try and revive them - but it was too late. We assume they had sat out in the cold since 4AM. In a box, on a roadside. Numerous people said looked and looked but until it was light they had no luck. They were 3-4ft off the road.

This isn't new and it's NOT "mental illness" - I know PLENTY of "crazy" people who would NEVER EVER harm an animal. That is an EXCUSE, not a reason. I do NOT have sympathy for the human who did this, as she drives a nicer car than me, has a roof over her head, and had at least 4 people wanting to adopt a kitten - and anyone asking for sympathy? Think harder.

Now, there are talks of "going to her house to protest" and yes, many of us have her full name, phone number, and address, BUT what I want to ask is this:

Let's KEEP TALKING about the wrongness of it. AVOID labeling her mentally ill (it would help her case and unless you are legally able to diagnose, it's pointless). DONATE AND FOSTER RIGHT NOW to your local shelters Animal Care Alliance Whiskers Rescue And Foster Inc. Nonprofit Organization HELP the Animals, Inc. Monkey Cat's Memorial Rescue and Home for Wayward Cats and ANY independent rescuers you know.

ADOPT FROM US!!!! Right now, I have one kitten who is about 8 months old who experienced the exact same thing. He was left on a road and all of his siblings were found dead. The only difference is he is a Survivor and they never caught the person who did it. Magpie lost an eye, but not his gentle spirit. He He still needs a home and he is the sweetest boy!!

FINALLY, and most IMPORTANTLY, HERE IS WHAT TO DO:

Save your anger for WHEN SHE GOES TO COURT, for when our County AC and prosecutors are actively ON THIS.

At this moment I TRUST that she will go to court. We have a dedicated county AC who will see it through AND all the appropriate info and steps have been taken at this point. I have total trust in Jesse, to the two kind young people who found these babies and brought them to ACA, and our vet Dr. Maggie and the staff who were present who will likely be asked to testify.

Take your protests and your anger and your words to our town leaders, tell them that spending thousands on a consultant for this town is NOT going to fix the problem, that we need our existing structures to be supported, and we need a properly-run and maintained COUNTY shelter that smaller rescues and independent rescuers can pull from, support, and work WITH.

Let's stop this from happening AGAIN in the meantime and then get .

Happy Caturday!! Lance loves Korrine <3 this rescue is currently caring for three blind kittens! Lance is completely sightless but that doesn't prevent him from having a great life. While he isn't as brave as Ivan yet, he will learn to take stairs and handle just about everything a normal cat does. If you're considering fostering or adopting a blind kitten, I'm happy to answer all of your questions. I love these "Special Needs" cats as they are simply special and don't have a lot of needs!

Happy Caturday from rainy Indiana! Apologies for not posting very frequently, but caring for 12 kittens is quite a lot of work! Everyone's doing pretty good. There are a couple of problematic eyes here and there, including Feather who will likely lose sight in one of her eyes at least. Reason I'm attaching a little PSA about blind cats. None of the kittens I have currently are in that category, but I often deal with blind kitties and I see many posted from other rescues where I find some problems. There is this desire to cast these animals as special needs and demand that they have a special home. On the other hand, I believe that every cat is special and deserves a special home, but blind kitties don't need any special concessions whatsoever. If you build up their confidence when they are young, they are adaptable, athletic, and very clever. They can play and jump and run just like a normal cat. They get around just fine even if you move your furniture or have stairs in your home. Honestly the only quirk I have had to deal with with my particular blind cat is that he doesn't like to go in a carrier but that's likely because he feels trapped and it scares him. He's also not a fan if I close him in a room. I think he just likes to be aware of all of his exits anytime he is any place. That said, if you have the opportunity to adopt a blind cat, please don't think too hard about how they will handle living with you. Trust me when I say that they are really not that much different. And having a kitty like this will often remind you of just how wonderful these little animals are. Here is a video of my own Decker who is just over 2 years old. Tiny Kitten Almost Jumps

Someone is thinking very hard about jumping today.

THANK you to those who sent kitten food! I have already sent home some to some of my fosters <3 Also thanks to other rescue pals for litter, kitten beds and food. Current kitten tally is 25 total in foster (including a few with me). That's going to mean A LOT of spaying and neutering in June and July and even August! That's also 25 kittens who will have a CHANCE - so thank you.
