Y’all I messed up. I let last month go by without shouting out our best boy’s 10th (!) birthday. How Butch is already 10 is beyond me. With only a couple exceptions, if you have gotten a lab from us they are related to Butch. The mileage is starting to show but he still has so much to give. He has been such a good boy to Jake and Tori’s little girl. I don’t know that he’ll make it out for a hunt this year. He has a neck injury from going too hard that we don’t want to flare up again. If the weather is cool enough opening day I might bully Jake to let him pick up a couple birds. I do realize that’s probably more for my own selfish reasons. He is my favorite dog to watch pick up doves. Jake barely has to give him and direction. He sees the bird, marks the bird, retrieves the bird, plops it beside the dove stool, and looks for the next one. It’s like watching a well oiled machine run. Anyway, happy belated birthday to the best boy!

These little charmers got their collars yesterday so it seemed only fair to share their snazzy new pictures. They are getting close to my favorite puppy age where their personalities start coming out and they are getting more curious and playful by the day. The first 5 pups are our beautiful ladies and then the back 3 are our handsome boys. We do have a couple pups available. If you think an English springer spaniel might be your new buddy give us a holler and we will be happy to help.

The weather has been the absolute best this week. Cool days with mornings worthy of a sweatshirt. It’ll make the mind head towards October. Sam is ready to go. Birds west of the Mississippi better be on the lookout. As dad would say “she’s not going to take any prisoners.”

I know this got a story share a few days ago but it deserves a grid post. The cockers are usually described as happy go lucky and Bobby is the complete essence of that. I could tell him we were going to spend tomorrow in a coal mine and he’d be down for it as long as he got to tag along.

We all know labs are the undisputed king and queens of the water, but I’m not sure any other dog gets as much joy from the water as the spaniels. Both the springers and cockers love it@so much. Here miss ivy is on a flaming adventure with dad.

Our litter of English cocker spaniels will start heading to their new homes soon. It’s always fun to see where they land. Some are staying in the state and on the flip side one little lady gets to soak up some California sunshine. We do have a couple fellas available. I know I always comment that “it’s been a fun litter”, and that’s because every litter is fun and special in their own way. This litter has been no different. They have their mom’s curiosity and their dad’s loving side. It’s going to be fun to follow up with them and see where their little lives lead. Whether they get to complete a family as a companion dog, bust through some fields and live out their bird dog dreams, or the perfect combination of both!

I had mentioned on stories a couple weeks ago that this girl would be available soon. Susie is now available! We have given her a puppy head start. Meaning she is crate trained and basic obedience. Some very light retrieving work has also been done but that has not been the focus. She has a natural heel like her dad and picked up walking on a leash like a champ. She is very eager to please and looks to her people to lead the way. Also like her dad it does take her a minute to warm up to new people but once she decides you’re on the up and up she with love you forever. Reach out if you’d like some more info on her.

On the list for dogs we are most excited about Grace would have to be at the top. She is checking a lot of the boxes. She has this amazing drive but then settles in the classic British fashion. Some days it feels like we are holding her back, or even walking on eggshells around her for fear of doing something wrong and “messing her up.” It’s funny how much human error can go into working with a dog, and then you have to spend time fixing your mistake. We are going to continue her training with small steps forward and if all goes as planned she’ll get to be put to the test this fall.

Dad won’t let a pup sight point much, but he can’t help himself with this lady. He’s been so excited about her and even graced her with the highest honor name, Speck. This was the name of his childhood setter that he absolutely adored. Safe to say this girly has big shoes to fill, but I think she’s up to the challenge.

Last night was an all nighter, but for the best reason. Etta had her puppies! She did amazing and she and her puppies are doing great. It’s been almost a year since our last springer pups. They are so much fun to have around, and we always look forward to them. I’m in the process of contacting the people on our waitlist (if you’ve reached out you’ll get an email or text from us soon). With her having 8 puppies it does look like we will have some available so please contact us if you are interested and we can answer any questions you may have!

The way this dog seeks warmth will always be amusing. 90 degree day, you’ll find her laying in the sun. Cooks by the wood stove all winter. Seeks out any heater that is on to lay in front of it. And I guess the air was set just a little too cool in the house so she had to crawl under a blanket on the couch.

Lilly had quite the adventure today. She took the best nap on the way home. If anyone is near the NC mountains the weather is absolutely gorgeous right now, and it looks like it will be for the next week or so. It’s worth a trip!

Really enjoying this girl. She is full of confidence and we are excited to see how she progresses.

We said goodbye to Kate last week. She was Jake’s first dog and took up with Tori shortly after they go married becoming her permanent shadow. We didn’t know if she would stick around until Emery was born but she did, thereby becoming Emery’s first 4 legged pal this past year. It probably helped that Kate lost her hearing a couple years ago but she was so tolerant of her affection and love.

Kate was tolerant of most things. Bless her heart, I don’t know how many puppies she had to deal with over the years. She was great at setting firm boundaries without being mean and every single pup respected her for it. You can see her and baby Lilly in one of the pics.

She loved all things bird related. She spent her younger years on watch of one of mom’s bird houses and then became quite the bird dog. She hunted with heart. My favorite story was of her retrieving a pheasant. She never really liked retrieving pheasants so when she got to the top of a hill she just started nudging it with her nose to get it back down to Jake. She got a bad case of Lyme from Wisconsin when she was two. One of those, don’t know if she’ll make it through the night cases. She did and although it caused her joints to be a bit stiff from time to time it never slowed her down too much.

She was a wonderful dog and a great example of the English springer spaniel breed. We will certainly miss having her around.

I could probably use a more majestic photo but this sums up Dolly the best. We have made the decision to not breed Dolly and we think she would enjoy a home where she gets to be the star of the show, so she is now available. This was a hard decision and the crux of it is based on how hard it can sometimes be to keep weight on her. We love her lean, athletic build but looking forward at what a pregnancy and nursing might look like we think it could be challenging to keep her at her healthiest. She is such a happy girl and thrives on a routine. She loves exploring around the farm but never veers out of sight. She would love a home with a big back yard or a little land to explore. She is 3 and will be 4 this summer. If anyone is hoping to avoid the puppy stage and looking for an adult dog please reach out and we can get you some more information and answer any questions you may have.

This is Dan! We welcomed him to our crew around a month ago. It has been years since Dad has had a setter, and he’s been wanting one for a while now. The last one I remember was a Gordon setter he had for a season about 20 years ago. We’ve been enjoying having Dan around and he’s been enjoying being dad’s morning chair buddy (third pic). It’ll be fun to watch him progress over these next few months and hopefully have a good first season this fall.

We had a wonderful family get a shorthair from us a few years ago, and they reached out over the winter wanting to add a cocker to the crew. They sent us an update today of Fritz and Rylee’s budding friendship. I think it is safe to say it is going great!
