Hmmm I see a dog 🐕

Apparently, if you can see two people hugging, you're left-brained, and if you can see a dinosaur, you're right-brained. What do you see in the mountain?

Here’s a corrected infographic to help fix the popular but incorrect meme that has been circulating on social media this last month.
Please DON’T post “But I’ve heard X food is toxic” in the comments, rather, post the research studies (not links to outdated dog websites or blogs that haven’t bothered to clarify their poorly written material) about foods that have been declared “toxic” if consumed by pets with no science to back up the claim.
When you spend time searching the literature for toxicology studies on the feeding of fresh fruits and veggies to pets you come up shockingly empty-handed. AAFCO/FEDIAF state we should not feed these foods to pets: onions, grapes/raisins, macadamia nuts and chocolate. Those studies exist, but that’s it. 4 foods.
Compare that to never ending TOXIC/DON’T FEED lists found all over social media and it’s so confusing; even worse, people share these posts without doing any research.
There’s a big difference between feeding a giant pit in a fruit (or a wad of bark or leaves) and feeding normal amounts the actual edible fruit or veggie; same goes for your two-legged kids. Toddlers and pets need to have the rinds, cores, seeds, leaves, stems and pits of fruits removed prior to eating, and all fruits and veggies need to be chopped into tiny, bite-sized pieces. Common sense, right?
I believe pet parents also have some common sense and won’t offer rinds, pits or cores to their pets as treats; AKC and ASPCA, please update or clarify your out-of-date website info 🙏🏼.
Suggestion for pet websites discussing feeding real foods: put a * by foods that have a rind, pit, core or stem. Remind folks training treats should less than 10% of an animal’s daily calories, and if your pet has never had the new food before, always feed them slowly, giving the GI tract time to adjust. Chop them into tiny pieces and offer in moderation.
It’s time to declare common sense for the win; pet parents aren’t idiots, so it’s time we stop perpetuating fear-based myths and denying animals the fresh food treats they deserve. 🫐🍎🍒🍑🥭🥑🥝🥦🥬🥕🍌🥚🥒🍆🥥🍉🐾

The 7th June is the anniversary of the death of Sapper Darren Smith & Explosive Detection Dog Herbie on this day in 2010 in Afghanistan. Sapper Jacob Moerland was also KIA in this action.

The day is celebrated with a Parade at the National Military & Service Working Dog Monument, situated at the RSPCA Animal Care Campus, Wacol in Queensland.

Is your dog a priority in your life?

😮‍💨 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲…

👉🏽 It’s a phrase I hear a lot from new clients. “I just don’t think I can do that” or “that’s sounds super time consuming”.

☝🏽 The truth about successful dog training and having a well adjusted dog, is that a lot of the “training” occurs in general life with a little bit of consideration and management.

🐾 With 4 dogs, with individual needs, there are certainly times where it feels like I am not really rocking their socks with fulfillment. However, just thinking a little bit a head, helps me get in those 2-3 minute sessions for each of them.

🚗 Last week I had to go to the post office.
So I took all 4 dogs in the car, and jumped out with each of them, played some engagement games, tug and and worked on environmental exposure.

⏰ You don’t have to train for hours and hours. Just try and include a little be of fun here and there.

😉 Remember, 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲.

💬 How do you manage a busy schedule and training dogs?

It was seven years ago today that Sarbi passed away.

After being diagnosed with brain cancer, we made the hard decision to put her to sleep.

We spent the day doing some of her favourite things (playing with a ball of course) and making her comfortable.

Thinking of you today Sarbi ❤️ 🐾

On 2 Sep 2008, Sarbi was separated from me when an RPG exploded just to my side and the clip holding her to my body armour broke.

I was unable to recover her during the battle as I was later fragged by a second RPG and shot in the hip with a ricochet.

Sarbi was missing for 14 months before being recovered by US Special Forces. This was the start of an epic journey to bring her home.

brain: "Are you sleeping?"
me: "Yes, now shut up!"
brain: "Did you put tomorrow's dog food out to thaw?"
me: "👁 👄👁"

What an amazing dog!

What an amazing dog!

Judy, a purebred pointer, was the mascot of several ships in the Pacific, and was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and taken to a prison camp. There she met Aircraftsman Frank Williams, who shared his small portion of rice with her.

Judy raised morale in the POW camp, and also barked when poisonous snakes, crocodiles or even tigers approached the prisoners. When the prisoners were shipped back to Singapore, she was smuggled out in a rice sack, never whimpering or betraying her presence to the guards.

The next day, that ship was torpedoed. Williams pushed Judy out of a porthole in an attempt to save her life, even though there was a 15-foot drop to the sea. He made his own escape from the ship, but was then recaptured and sent to a new POW camp.

He didn't know if Judy had survived, but soon he began hearing stories about a dog helping drowning men reach pieces of debris after the shipwreck. And when Williams arrived at the new camp, he said: "I couldn’t believe my eyes! As I walked through the gate, a scraggly dog hit me square between the shoulders and knocked me over. I’d never been so glad to see the old girl!"

They spent a year together at that camp in Sumatra. "Judy saved my life in so many ways," said Williams. "But the greatest of all was giving me a reason to live. All I had to do was look into those weary, bloodshot eyes and ask myself: 'What would happen to her if I died?' I had to keep going."

Once hostilities ceased, Judy was then smuggled aboard a troopship heading back to Liverpool. In England, she was awarded the Dickin Medal (the "Victoria Cross" for animals) in May 1946. Her citation reads: "For magnificent courage and endurance in Japanese prison camps, which helped to maintain morale among her fellow prisoners, and also for saving many lives through her intelligence and watchfulness".

At the same time, Frank Williams was awarded the PDSA's White Cross of St. Giles for his devotion to Judy. Frank and Judy spent a year after the war visiting the relatives of English POWs who had not survived, and Frank said that Judy "always provided a comforting presence to the families."

When Judy finally died at the age of 13, Frank spent two months building a granite and marble memorial in her memory, which included a plaque describing her life story.

No one can win hearts like man’s best friend and in honor of this bond between man and canine, Dog Day is celebrated.

Take time to appreciate the love and value that dogs bring to our daily lives, and to do your bit for homeless and abused dogs the world over. From keeping us safe working for the emergency services to supporting people who are blind, deaf, or disabled, dogs do a lot for us, and this is an opportunity to give something back. 🐾

How many times a day should we feed our pets? 🐶🐱

In today’s episode of the Inside Scoop at 12pm ET, fasting expert Dr. Jason Fung explains the importance of fasting and how intermittent eating affects our (and our dogs’) health and longevity. Dogs are evolutionarily designed to skip meals (fast), but most people aren’t aware of the profound health benefits from creating periods of GI rest.

In today’s interview Rodney Habib and I share highlights from our interview with Dr. Fung as he discusses how fasting repairs the body and “cleans house,” improving the immune system; and why fasting is an “essential part of longevity”.
