Heatstroke in pets

• Panting or distressed breathing
• Restlessness
• Drooling
• Red gums or tongue
• Increased heart rate
• Seizure
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Lethargy
• Confusion and weakness

Seek immediate advice from your vet

Offer small sips of water
Pour cool water over your dog
Do not place wet towels over your dog as this can trap heat and make it worse

Now the weather is starting to warm up here are a few tips:

Keep pets hydrated, make sure they have access to clean, fresh water.

Walk dogs at cooler times of the day (first thing in the morning and later in the evening) remember if the ground is too hot for your hand it's too hot for their paws. A walk in the woods can provide more shade than the street or park.

Fill a paddling pool with cool water and your dogs favourite toys to help keep them cool

Provide cooling mats, these can be bought from most pet stores and some discount stores.

Keep cages and tanks out of direct sunlight

Groom pets regularly, this gets rid of dead hair and can help keep them cool.

Provide shade for them.
