Familial engagement and mental physical stimulation for your pets is easily equal to and as important as training they may need. It is a fact that most destructive behaviors stem from boredom and pent-up environmental frustration in pets. Therefore, I have decided to do a series of articles highlighting the many great ways to better develop your relationship with your pet.

- Dogs chewing
- Cats shredding
- Birds over picking
- Small animal aggression and cannibalism
- Cribbing and aggression in livestock animals.

Let's tackle the easiest ones first, DOGS.

Luckily, the variety of dog engaging products and locations is vast and quite inclusive. Besides the hundreds of clubs and enthusiast groups for every breed and non-breed specific canine;
there are nearly as many activities and literally thousands of engaging items that are available to purchase.
First and foremost is physical exercise. This helps dogs vent both physical and mental/ emotional stress and excess energy. Now, before you tell me it is impossible for you to take Fido for a walk, I will remind you that exercise can happen ANYWHERE, and at just about any time. Teach a trick, have Fido jump a broom stick, or play a game of tug. Fetch is a great go to game and hide and seek is quickly becoming a viral phenomenon! Have you seen the 'talking' dogs? You can now purchase button kits and teach your dog (or another pet) to communicate with you.
The number of sports available to dogs is always growing and changing. Have you tried Treibball yet? how about Flyball? Agility? Tracking? There are several sporting breed clubs for you hunting dog enthusiasts, and even activities for the terriers in our lives. Own a working breed or mix? Try skijoring with skis or rollerblades. You can even use a bicycle!
Mental stimulation can take the form of food puzzles, chewing toys or training. My own parents play ‘hide and seek’ with their little poodle mix by hiding a few treats around the living room every day for Abby to find. Making mealtimes a little more difficult than just snarfing food from a bowl can be a great way to use up some physical and mental energy for a dog that has a rather sedentary day.

Do you want to make your pet happier and smarter? Try these mental stimulation tips!
We all know that physical exercise is important for our furry friends, but did you know that mental stimulation is equally vital? Mental stimulation can prevent boredom, reduce stress, improve behavior, and enhance cognitive abilities in our pets. It can also strengthen the bond between you and your pet and make your life more fun and rewarding.
So how can you provide mental stimulation for your pet? Here are some ideas:
Play interactive games with your pet, such as hide and seek, fetch, tug of war, or chase. Give your pet puzzle toys or food-dispensing toys that challenge them to use their brains and noses to get the reward. Teach your pet new tricks or commands or practice the ones they already know. You can use clicker training, positive reinforcement, or shaping techniques to make learning fun and easy.
Provide socialization opportunities for your pet with other people and animals. You can take them to a dog park, a pet store, a friend’s house, or join a pet club or enthusiast group.
For dogs, try different types of canine sports, such as agility, flyball, scent work, treibball, or herding. Engaging activities such as food puzzles, learning tricks and going for nature walks can be very physically as well as mentally engaging. These activities can stimulate your pet’s natural instincts and abilities and provide physical and mental exercise.
There are also many ways to engage with your housecat and provide them with mental and physical stimulation. Here are some examples:
- You can use a **puzzle feeder** that requires your cat to figure out how to get the food out of a maze or series of obstacles¹². This can challenge your cat's problem-solving skills and make mealtime more fun.
- You can encourage your cat's natural hunting instinct by using **motorized mice toys**, a **light beam** from a flashlight, or even a simple **string** that you pull across the floor². This can help your cat exercise their body and mind, as well as bond with you.
- You can let your cat climb on a **cat tree** or a **cat condo** that allows them to scratch and explore²⁴. This can satisfy your cat's desire to be up high and observe their surroundings, as well as keep their claws healthy.
- You can provide your cat with **cardboard boxes**, **cat squares**, or **window bird feeders** to give them spaces for hiding and watching³. This can appeal to your cat's curiosity and sense of security, as well as entertain them with some wildlife action.
- You can enjoy a spot of **indoor fishing** with your cat by using a toy fish on a string or a wand³. This can simulate a realistic prey for your cat and allow them to practice their hunting skills, as well as have some fun with you.
Try something new and creative with your pet, such as painting, dancing, or making music. You can use paw prints, brushes, bells, or other items to create art or music with your pet.
These are just some of the ways you can mentally stimulate your pet. You can also customize them to suit your pet’s personality, preferences, and needs. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the time you spend with your pet.

Meet Dustybuns (aka Dusty or Doot)
Dusty is a 2 yr old heeler.
Dusty gets 45 mins of play and training every morning JUST TO KEEP THE EDGE OFF.
Then he gets an intense food puzzle to help relax his brain for an hour or two.
He is a velcro dog, and does not do well alone.
Therefore his body and mind need exhaustion before he can settle in on his own.
15 mins outdoor play every 2 hours all day while I am at work, then he is at my side gardening or while I work in the yard, or doing housework. He is actually the main reason I changed my business from training to enrichment! I adore this goofball!

Seeing people come to buy fish and handing the owner, money, this cat went out and got a leaf to pay for her fish. On the first day, the owner of the shop thought this was very cute, so he gave her a small fish. Now everyday this cat comes in to buy a fish with a leaf.
