Check out our popular science published in the magazine: The Fish Site https://thefishsite.com/articles/tilapia-genetics-study-a-comparative-trial-between-two-strains-in-brazil .The article can also be accessed via our website:https://genomar.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Impact-of-genetics-in-tilapia-production.pdf

A pre-launch trial of GenoMar 1000 in Brazil demonstrated that a fish farm stocking 200,000 fish could see an annual profit increase of 36% in cages and 31% in ponds simply by switching to GenoMar 1000 genetics . This presents a tremendous opportunity not just for farmers, but also for whole tilapia industry in Brasil (and elsewhere).

How does GenoMar 1000 achieve such improved production performance? The answer lies in selective breeding and the use of advanced scientific technology. GenoMar 1000 was developed over many generations by carefully selecting fish with the best growth, survival, and fillet yield traits, resulting in a product that is genetically predisposed to grow quickly and efficiently

A recent study conducted by aquaculture breeding company GenoMar compares the performance of their premium tilapia line - GenoMar 1000 - against a common commercial strain, highlighting potential bene…

Today, I had the pleasure of delivering a seminar on GenoMar's innovations in selective breeding for profitable Nile tilapia industry. The online session, hosted by the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, saw an engaging participation from MSc students and faculty members. During the talk, I had the opportunity to showcase our recent innovations in Nile tilapia breeding and highlight the profound impact it has had on farmers worldwide.

As industry leaders in various innovations within the tilapia sector, it's our mission to consistently share our insights, experiences, and industry best practices with students and faculty members across different universities. These guest lectures and online seminars serve as a valuable platform for students to broaden their understanding of industry trends and gain practical insights.

These seminars and guest lectures are part of the newly established Genomar Tilapia Outreach Program by GenoMar Genetics Group. This initiative aims to foster collaboration between academia and industry, with all activities undertaken by Genomar in partnership with academia falling under this program.

The switch to GENOMAR 1000 tilapia can be a very beneficial decision for Brazilian tilapia farmers. GENOMAR 1000 can help farmers to increase their production, profits, and sustainability.
· Increased production: GENOMAR 1000 grow approximately 30% faster than the best local commercial strain, which means that farmers can produce more fish in a shorter period of time.
· Increased profits: GENOMAR 1000 also have higher survival rates and uniformity than local strains, leading to approximately a 27% annual increase in profits for farmers.
· Increased sustainability: Faster growth and increased survivality leads to increased performance and feed efficiency, which decreases the cost of production per kilo of fish significantly. This can also help farmers to reduce the environmental impact.

The GenoMar Genetics Group, which supplies tilapia genetics through brands like GenoMar, Aquabel and AquaAmerica, is introducing the GenoMar line into the Brazilian market.

The advancement of selective breeding technologies has enabled the creation of innovative products that address the needs of farmers and provide sustainable methods for disease prevention. However, the adoption of such products in the market by stakeholders has been slow. A significant factor contributing to this hesitation is financial illiteracy. While financial evaluations for these strategies empower farmers to choose infection control models based on economic profitability, unfortunately, there is a lack of economic analysis for such approaches.
The blog (link at the end) provides a summary of a 2021 paper where we demonstrate the economic importance of embracing genetic advancements in disease resistance. This adoption not only enhances profitability but also helps in mitigating losses and contributes to the overall sustainability of the Nile tilapia aquaculture industry.

How can farmers ensure informed decisions when choosing the most suitable genetics or products for their requirements? In the coming decades, is the tilapia industry expected to reach a stage where breeding companies can provide farmers with reliable information sheets detailing expected performances, akin to practices in the poultry industry?
The adoption of such knowledge-driven farming practices, especially a data-driven approach in tilapia cultivation, necessitates the development of innovative Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These KPIs should be robust enough to capture production nuances across diverse geographies and production systems.
The blog, titled "Exploring the Necessity for Innovative KPIs in Evaluating and Comparing Tilapia Farm Performance," explores the significance of refining KPIs to effectively assess and compare productivity across various tilapia farms.

Exciting news from Vietnam!
The use of Genomar tilapia fingerlings is making a significant impact in the country. The official news portal of Tra Vinh Province recently shared a success story where a farmer achieved an impressive profit of over 40 million VND per 1,000m2 of pond using our tilapia fingerlings.
It's inspiring to witness farmers in the region exploring alternatives to shrimp farming (80% of the total farms are shrimp farms in the region), with tilapia emerging as a favorable choice. Based on the performance in the field, farmers and technical officers are seen highlighting the advantages of GenoMar tilapia farming, emphasizing its rapid growth, resilience to diseases, high survival rate, and more straightforward farming techniques compared to shrimp.
