"Training for competition hones a trainer's skills. You have to train to a much higher standard when you are being judged in the performance arena, and this carries through to pet dog training. When you've had to put it all on the line, you have to know your stuff." A nationally ranked trainer with more than 50 titles on more than a dozen dogs, Julia has the skill and experience to solve dog and puppy behavior problems and coach successful handlers.

This is Captain. he’s 5 years old, house trained and basic on leash obedience trained. Loves to go for walks or the occasional not-too-fast run around the neighborhood. He’s generally neutral to other dogs and knows how to behave around his current owner’s cat but might need re-education with new cat. Also neutral to friendly with kids. Current owner has had a job change that requires her to be away from home for long periods so she feels he deserves a home where he can be with his family more. He’s not super high energy, has a calm affectionate demeanor and would love a home with a
person or persons whose expectations match his attitude. Contact me ( through messenger or my website, www.coachforcanines.com ) if you’re interested and I’ll pass along the info. Also please share if you know someone…

A very common question I get from owners when a dog is here for Board & Train: “well what happens when…”

Nothing. Nothing happens when… because I don’t set the dog up to fail like that.

I train and prepare a dog. Baby steps. LEASH ON. We trainers, we use a leash a lot, and for a very long time, for a reason.

A leash is a communication tool, not simply a restraint tool.

I am not going to see what your dog does without a leash until they know what to do WITH a leash.

I am not going to see what your dog does when someone knocks until I see that they know how to act when someone doesn’t and just walks in.

I am not going to see your dog’s reaction to situation B, until I know they can respond appropriately to situation A.

When trainers do things in small steps and with leashes on, it’s because we are TEACHING. We aren’t running around, throwing dogs into situations that could be scary or stressful, hoping for the best and crossing our fingers which are subsequently sitting on an ecollar button.

How would you feel if you went to school, were told to do a geometry problem when all you know is basic math, then socked in the face when you get it wrong?

The LEASH is the ultimate teaching tool. It’s how we teach the geometry to the student who only knows basic math. It’s how we communicate.

If your dog can’t do it ON a leash, your dog can’t do it OFF a leash.

Put the leash on the dog.

I know everybody knows this but its worth a reminder. We are expecting **extremely** hot weather this week and for our dogs it can actually be dangerous. The only cooling mechanism dogs have is panting, tongue out. Dogs do not sweat, except through the pads of their feet, so cooling is a challenge especially those dogs who love to fetch and run. These dogs just do not have the judgment to slow down or stop when they are in chase mode, and can easily overheat to the point of extreme danger including death. So, we have to be smart for them, and as much as they love the game, don't indulge them beyond a few tosses early in the morning when it is under 75 degrees. Then its time to take a short leash walk on grass to cool down, and remember they have bare feet. Concrete and blacktop get hot fast and can burn .So, if you wouldn't walk barefoot on it, don't ask them to. Brachycephalic ( short nosed) dogs like bulldogs ( Including Frenchies) are at greater risk of overheating than other dogs so its unsafe to leave them outside at all in temperatures over the mid 90s. . and dogs with short thin coats overheat sooner than dogs with a double coat like a German shepherd as the undercoat actually insulates. ( which is why you should not shave a double coated dog.) Bring them in and keep them quiet.( If your dog does not know how to settle and relax in the house, or is not accustomed to a wire crate, a trainer can help!) If your dog is panting excessively or has a very " long" tongue hanging out, stop, get to a cool place preferably indoors and put cool wet towels ( not ice) on his exposed belly, inner thigh, foot pads, and head. If he does not cool down gradually with rest, or maintains a temperature of 103 degrees or higher, seek medical attention right away. Enjoy the holiday with your pal and stay cool!

Practice makes perfect. If you allow your dog to practice being obnoxious, he will become highly accomplished at it

What's the best of both worlds? Private lessons in your home with access to a controlled group where you can practice in a safe fenced private field with your trainer there to help you. Distractions? How about other dogs, cows, horses, chickens and the occasional pet duck? That's our Saturday Social which comes with your private lesson program. Especially great for puppies. The controlled exposure to other dogs that have all been vetted with an experienced trainer to supervise. That is smart socialization, unlike a "dog park" where who knows what can go on...no one checks vaccinations; frequent visitors can become territorial, and unfortunately its where many people take their unruly dogs because they cannot control them.Not. Safe.
