Caribbean Dog Rescue Coalition Working together to implore the CDC to amend their ban to decrease the import age allowance or exempt rabies-free countries. All Caribbean rescues welcome!

Nonprofit island rescues working together to save the indigenous Caribbean island dogs from the pending devastation of the future CDC ban going into effect on August 1st, 2024. The CDC is inserting a permanent ban on the import of all foreign dogs into the United States that are under the age of six (6) months old from all countries. Members of the coalition are imploring the CDC to reconsider thi

s ban and amend it to allow dogs of 15 weeks or to exempt rabies-free countries from the ban. If this ban goes through, rescues around the world will be forced to euthanize thousands of dogs a year who would otherwise be given a new hope through adoption, far from the hardships of their origins. Dogs Entering the U.S. from RABIES-FREE and LOW-RISK countries under CDC final rules

Beginning August 1, 2024, there are additional requirements to import dogs from rabies-free and low-risk countries (such as Canada and Mexico) under the final CDC rules. These requirements are significant and will require time and additional expense.

The final rules require submitting a CDC Dog Import Form (an online form that should take minimal effort) every time a dog enters the U.S. In addition to this form, the owner must submit one of three types of import forms (below).

For all of the three import forms, the dog must be examined by a licensed veterinarian and the form must be endorsed by an official government veterinarian in the exporting country.

With one exception, the import forms must be accompanied by records of veterinary history showing vet services provided for the six months prior to entry into the U.S. The vet services must have been provided in the exporting country. The owner must present these documents at the port of entry / land border crossing.

The one exception to providing records of veterinary history is to obtain a valid rabies titer test (item #3 below).

----------------------------------------------------------

The three import form options for dogs not vaccinated in the U.S. are:

1) A Certification of Dog Arriving from DMRVV-Free or Low-Risk Country into the United States form, along with vet records. This form must be completed within 30 days of entry.

2) A foreign export certificate, along with vet records.

3) A Certification of Foreign Rabies Certification and Microchip form, along with vet records OR a valid rabies titer test.

Here is where you can find the CDC forms and instructions in items #1 and #3. https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/required-forms-for-importing-dog-united-states.html

NOTE that there is a documentation option that allows for a USDA endorsed *export* health certificate, but this is only for dogs that already have a U.S. rabies vaccination.
