MEET ARCHIE đ¶
Last month we welcomed in darling 1 year old Archie (DOB 3/22/2021) after he was released into our care by his family when some recent life changes made it difficult for them to continue to meet his needs. He is now ready to find his perfect match family who will meet his every need and can keep up with his enthusiasm and zest for life!
MEDICAL đ©ș
We found adorable Archie to be healthy and congenitally sound with clear eyes, knees, hips, and heart, and his ears, skin, and teeth all clean and clear. Additionally, all of his labwork including his f***l test, heartworm and tick borne illness test, urinalysis, and bloodwork are all normal and negative. Archie underwent his neuter surgery in our care and recovered very well. He is up to date on vaccinations, neutered, microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. He is a healthy boy who is not on any medications and does not require any additional vetting, outside of regular wellness checks, at this time.
FOOD & POTTY HABITS đ„
Archie's foster mom describes him as a very robust and enthusiastic eater. Like most Cavaliers, he loves his meals and treats and practically inhales them. He is eating out of a "puzzle bowl" in his foster home to help slow him down a bit. He is eating his Fromm kibble meals twice a day, softened with a little warm water, and loves small pieces of fresh fruit as a healthy treat! Because Archie eats so fast, he must be supervised at meal time to ensure he doesn't visit the other dogs' bowls and steal their food. In his former home, Archie was managing to get to food that was left on tables and from out of the trash, so it is very important that no food is left out or within his reach and that the trash is kept away in a closed pantry. Archie's family must be committed to maintaining his ideal weight of 15 pounds through strictly portioned meals, healthy treats, and daily activity/exercise.
Archie has proved to be reliably potty trained in his foster home, having no accidents. That said, he is given frequent opportunities outside to be successful including first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every few hours in between including immediately after meals. He prefers to potty being let out into a safe and secured fenced yard instead of being leashed and walked. Please know that while Archie is reliable in his foster home, accidents are always to be expected especially initially while he transitions to another environment and routine.
PERSONALITY đ
Archie's foster mom describes him as a total joy! He is happy, playful, and has great energy! He loves toys, especially squeaky ones, and loves when you play with him by throwing his toys in the air. He also loves playing with his cavalier foster siblings and plays very well. Archie is as snuggly and cuddly as he is playful and active and loves to snuggle up close with you and being on the receiving end of your attention and affection. Like most Cavaliers, he's just happy being with you and spending time with you, but being a young, active, energetic boy, he needs plenty of opportunity for activity, play, engagement, and interaction.
ROUTINE â°
Archieâs day starts with a trip outside in the yard for pottying then inside for breakfast. He then spends most of the day in his foster home with his foster mom and cavalier foster siblings where he alternates between playtime, naptime, and outdoor time in the safe and secured fenced yard. He also takes a daily leashed walk around the neighborhood where he continues to work on good leash walking behavior. During the short periods of time where no humans are home, Archie stays in a large crate with one of his cavalier foster siblings. He does not do well being alone and needs a furry furiend for companionship. In the evening, after dinner, he enjoys snuggling on the couch before it's time for bed. Archie sleeps in the big bed snuggled up close to her foster mom. We are seeking a family who will allow him to enjoy the big bed, where every Cavalier belongs.
SOCIALIZATION đ
Archie gets along very well with his cavalier foster siblings but particularly enjoys the companionship of the other young, playful cavalier in the home who can match his energy level. He loves running and exploring in the yard, chasing after toys together, wrestling, romping, and cuddling up with them. Archie would be happiest and do best with other canine companions in the home and would not do well as an only dog. His perfect furry match would be another young (under 5), playful Cavalier, or other dog of similar size and temperament who will match his enthusiasm and who will engage and play with him. He has not been exposed to any cats while in our care so we are unsure how he would do with a feline furiend.
Archie knows no stranger and loves having guests and friends in the home where he wastes no time claiming their laps. He does not do as well meeting people out while leashed where he can become vocal. He seems to be well socialized and is not particularly timid or fearful although unusual and unexpected noises, like fireworks or nearby construction, can startle and scare him. We feel he would do well in an adult-only home or a home with older, gentle, well-behaved children (no infants or toddlers as there were young children in his previous home which were not a good match for him) who want to love on him and engage with him as long as they are appropriate and gentle with their love and affection.
IDEAL HOME & FAMILY đĄ
Most importantly, Archie needs a family who has the time and ability to shower him with love and attention and make him an included and important member of their family. He wants nothing more than to be with you and because pups need a lot of stimulation, attention, engagement, socialization, and activity, we are seeking a family who is able to be with him much of the day and where he will have very low alone time. He needs an active home with a canine playmate, lots of toys, and a safe and secured fenced yard so he can continue to enjoy his outdoor freedom. In addition to an appropriate and safe outdoor area for pottying and play, we will also be looking for a very "puppy proofed" home as puppies will be puppies and will get into everything they can. Anything within reach of the pup, especially food with Archie, is up for grabs and so ensuring that the yard and inside of the home can and will be well maintained for his safety is imperative.
Archie is continuing to work on good leash walking behavior in his foster home but needs continued training. He is described as an energetic "zig-zagger" who is in full out sprint the first few minutes of the walk. He also becomes vocal while on leash, barking at other dogs that he sees while out. We feel that Archie could benefit from positive based training classes and since he already knows 'sit', 'stay', 'leave it', and 'down', we feel he could be the star student! We also feel that he would excel and enjoy agility training and would love to find a family who will provide for him these outlets and opportunities.
