Another great show weekend and "Daveren's Times Stands Still" Spencer is on fire. With some serious competition he was awarded a group #1 placement and advanced to Best in Show! So grateful for Master Handler Rafael Puerta who also made time to evaluate some puppies. New Champions Daveren's This Way and Daveren's Swallow The Moon (Xander and Moon), have also been moved up and will be looking for a group placement this coming weekend in Welland. Spencer who is currently in Montreal will be competing in TICO this weekend, in Brockville, Ontario. Stay tuned!
For those still waiting for puppies, we have made a kennel decision to release two more black and tan females. They are just over 6 weeks old.

Another happy ending and a new beginning for another Invictus dog.
Tobias is such a happy go lucky boy!!
Last night his new adventure of a lifetime began!!! Today, after a good night sleep last night on a king size hotel bed, he flies with his new mom Stephanie to their oceanfront home in Nova Scotia! They have already bonded and she's fallen in love with him! ❤️
His new family has him enrolled in Nova Dog Sport classes and obedience training. We couldn't be more pleased for him and his new East Coast active life!! Bon Voyage sweet boy, you will be missed. We look forward to many pictures and stories on the life and times of Tobias.

The Guess Who wrote a song, 🎶 "Running Back To Saskatoon" 🎶, and that's where Rookie will be this afternoon...✈ "singing all the Prairie tunes"!

This lucky boy left this morning in a heated Cargo area on a 787. He was so excited that he couldn't stand still long enough to get a good picture with the Air Canada Cargo Crew lol! We left him knowing he's in good hands, and with plenty of in-flight doggy snacks for the journey. 🍖

His new family is anxiously awaiting his arrival in Saskatchewan!! Congratulations to them, and a round of applause to "Team Invictus" for getting it done!

Bon Voyage and Happy Trails Rookie! ❤

It's spring training and "Rookie" is up to bat! This home run of a puppy is ready to round the bases with You! He's 9 months old and his tail wags so fast it's hypnotizing.
Sadly, Rookie was surrendered to the Kennel. His family is enduring a crisis and were unable to give him the responsible care and nurture he needed. They certainly did the right thing by contacting the breeder first. Rookie is the brother to Quinn who was adopted last week. He is a beautiful Invictus German Pinschers boy who needs a new family ASAP. Both parents, Ruby and Nelson are health tested.
If you would like to meet Rookie or need more information, please phone Marlene at 2896977297

🎶💜 "Come all without, come all within, You'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn"!! 🎶💜
All of our friends with music inspired minds know where these lyrics originate...
but more importantly, the eagle has landed!
Safely in the loving arms of Chad Thatcher and his wife Fatima!

Quinn began her journey today, on a frigid morning in Toronto, Obviously wearing her parka with hood. She boarded her heated cargo plane with cookies galore to her safe landing terminal at the far west city in our country, Vancouver! Her welcoming family will then spend 2 hours with her as they board the ferry which takes them to their homeland, Victoria British Columbia!!
The followers and family of Invictus German Pinschers are excited to learn more of the new life this gorgeous puppy is going to have. Cheers!!

We'd like to introduce you to Jeannine Brillinger, in this picture below with Carbon. She is a very experienced and qualified handler.
Jeannine is also a "Guardian parent" for the Invictus German Pinschers kennel. Because she lives so close by, she rotates dogs in her home to give them each a different experience. Jeannine then has a chance to focus on each individual dog, bonds with them and trains them as needed. The dogs also benefit socially, as she introduces them to seniors and children alike.

Our Kennel could use more people like Jeannine.

Other Guardian homes will keep a dog in their home for the duration of the dogs life as their own. The Kennel may on occasion need the dog back for breeding or show purposes, but afterwards the dogs returns to it's Guardian home and family.
German Pinschers thrive in a home environment, more so than in a kennel. This way they bond with humans instead of other dogs, which is much better for their mental and emotional well-being. All of our dogs are also our family members. We truly want what is best for them as a whole.
If you live in Southern Ontario, within an approximate 50km radius of Welland and are interested in being a Guardian home for one of our dogs, please call Marlene at 2896977297 for more information and an application.

There are so many positives in this role, not only for dogs...but people too! 💜
We look forward to hearing from you.

Carbon says, "I've got a new job, and a new Mom!!💕!! I started out as a show dog, became a champion 🏆, and now I'm going to be a full-time service dog 🐕‍🦺!!" Huge congratulations and thanks to George for making this happen! Carbon is moving to Toronto where she will become a fully certified, 24/7 Service dog! She will be accompanying George to a restaurant, grocery store, or anywhere else her handler needs to be. Her Service dog jacket has been measured up and ordered. We couldn't be more proud of her! 🥰 Another happy and positive outcome for an Invictus GP!! We will miss her and all of her sweetness. 💜
Another thank you to the many GP lovers who also expressed interest in adopting Carbon.
We still have some amazing and super loving gorgeous red young males also looking for forever homes. For more information, please phone Marlene at 2896977297. Everyone wants the girls, but don't underestimate the boys!

Long post alert: Vaccination vs Socialization.

We have had a run of posts from folks who did not begin outside socialization with their puppies until after the close of the critical socialization period. These folks felt or were advised that they needed a full series of vaccinations on board before beginning outside socialization and classes. And, unfortunately, now these folks are writing in because their puppies are displaying fear when brought out in public.

These breeders and owners felt the risk of disease outweighed the benefit of socialization. I am in NO WAY here to argue that decision. We encourage breeders and owners to weigh the risks and benefits and make their own choices based on their circumstances.

But you must understand that the decision to withhold early socialization carries a heavy risk of puppies who are frightened of novelty. You don’t get a pass on needing to socialize your puppies because you do the rest of the protocols in Puppy Culture. Early outside socialization is a huge part of the program and we devote an entire chapter to “Vaccination vs Socialization” http://bit.ly/PUPPYCULTUREVOD.

The point of the socializing in the early part of the puppies’ lives is that they are wired to imprint experiences with one, maybe two, exposures. You’re getting in there before they have a high level of fear of the novel and getting a huge bang for your buck in terms of imprinting positive experiences. Literally, you can accomplish in 15 minutes what might take months to accomplish with an adult dog.

And it’s easier and less technical to work with young puppies. You don’t have to understand much learning theory or have a lot of dog training knowledge. Pretty much pairing food and attention with novelty is going to be enough for most puppies (assuming you are sensible about the encounters you set up). Most dog breeders can learn to do this well.

But you are into a whole different space when you have a 12-14-16 week old puppy. Now you are into standard counterconditioning and desensitization, and the fear response is strong. Just pairing food and affection with strangers is not going to do it. You need to understand learning theory and how to apply it. Which means you will probably need the services of a dog trainer with chops to help you navigate this.

If you find yourself the position of having a puppy or puppies that is or are past the critical socialization period and now afraid of novelty, I recommend you find help through this group – they are a super solid group of dog trainers who, as far as I can tell, moderate as tightly as we do here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/pandemicpuppy/

Again, I am not quarreling with anyone’s individual decision based on circumstances, but this is the exact reason we made Puppy Culture. There is no substitute for early socialization and unfortunately most people are just in over their heads with trying to counter condition an animal that missed this socialization window. That’s what I saw in my practice as a dog trainer and that’s what we sought to avoid by making the film.

Will doing the rest of the protocols in Puppy Culture help at all if you don’t do early socialization? Sure. You at least will have a puppy with foundation behaviors and has a sense of trust. But there is no substitute for early socialization.

I will wade a little further into this and say that our official line in Puppy Culture (that Drs. Herron and Leal discuss), based on the UC Davis study, is a “do no harm” start point and the most we officially feel comfortable recommending. But, even though we cannot recommend it in general, we ourselves have adopted even earlier off premises socialization based on the circumstances of our lines and the relative safety of where we live. Listen to our podcast on this topic here: https://www.podbean.com/pu/pbblog-s6x3m-e0ce4b

We cover the relative risks and benefits early socialization in Puppy Culture. We go into vaccine technology, interview two prominent veterinarians and review the (still) current studies on the risk vs the benefit of early socialization. It’s a big chapter with lots of information so I’m not going to rehash it all here. If you need a refresher go to the “Vaccination vs Socialization” chapter of Puppy Culture

So, determining the risk-benefit of early socialization is up to you, but know that there is a risk to waiting, and it’s pretty predictable. http://bit.ly/PUPPYCULTUREVOD.

I will delete any comments that criticize people for making this decision. It’s a risk benefit analysis that takes a lot of factors into account, and you don’t know the circumstances of any particular breeder or owner. Yes, the overwhelming preponderance of the evidence is that early socialization is safe if you take the correct biosafety precautions, but that does NOT mean it’s the right choice in every case.
