We have another truck of pet food coming! We understand the huge need for pet food relief in Missoula and our neighboring communities, and we want to make sure no pets are going hungry. Over the last year and a half, we helped distribute over 75,000 lbs of pet food to Montana shelters and food banks, and now we need your help! The truck that is coming has 28 pallets of pet food and we need a place to store it as we work through distribution. If you’re a community member/business with easy to access storage space that could fit 28 pallets of food, please email [email protected] ! Thank you in advance for supporting our efforts!

In honor of ranch dog Jewel, this is an all-breed open retrieval competition in which all levels of retrieving skills, or lack thereof, are rewarded. Successful retrieving is not the goal. Fun for dogs and their human partners is.

Get your pets microchipped and vaccinated tomorrow for free!

The 4th of July is coming and we want to help get your pets up-to-date on vaccinations and microchipped! This Friday, from 3-5pm, you can drive up to our shelter for a free vaccine and microchipping clinic. We will have you fill out paperwork in your car, so that you can keep your AC running until it is your pet’s turn for the clinic. We will also have water in the shady areas at the front of the shelter. Due to time constraints - this clinic will not be for general wellness checks or questions for the vet. This free clinic is made possible with generous support from the Max & Betty Swanson Foundation.

Let’s all enjoy the holiday and keep our pets safe! If you have any questions, please call the shelter at 406-549-3934.

Do you know the main signs of heat stroke in dogs?

Dogs don’t tolerate high temperatures as well as humans. Because they only have sweat glands in their feet and around their nose, they are less efficient at cooling themselves down. Is your dog panting and restless or are you worried your dog won’t stop panting? These among the early signs of heat stroke. Other symptoms of heat stroke in dogs include rapid breathing, barking or whining, excessive thirst, excessive drooling, and increased heartbeat. Treatment for Heat Stroke in Dogs:
If your pet is showing any symptoms of heat exhaustion, give your dog plenty of water — and make sure she drinks it. You can also wet your dog with room temperature water. Skip ice water or ice packs, because they can actually make your pet’s core temperature rise. And, don’t saturate your dog in water because it prevents effective evaporation of the heat. Call you vet or go to an emergency 🚨 vet clinic if your pet is showing symptoms. This heat is no joke!!!

This sweet girl is looking for just the right home

Tuesday is popping in to let you know it's her favorite day of the week!

She also wants to let you know she's still looking for the right adopter! Tuesday is a smart, energetic and extra cuddly 2-year-old pup. She can be uneasy around new people at first, but is improving a lot on her stranger-danger reactivity through our shelter behavior treatment program and now even gets to go on field trips with staff! To help her get started on the right paw, her adopter will receive a set of complimentary private lessons from our awesome certified trainers.

Tuesday loves carrying around her stuffed toys, crawling into your lap and running after her ball, but it's tough for a dog like Tuesday to live in a loud and overstimulating shelter environment. We believe that being in a stable and low-traffic home environment will help her succeed!

If you're looking for a loyal friend like Tuesday, you can submit an adopter profile here: http://myhswm.org/adopt/dogs-puppies/dog-pet-people-profile

Reminder for all the pet parents

Ticks are most active from March to mid-May and from mid-August to November. Though they can be active anytime the temperature is above freezing. Health agencies are warning the public that tick-borne illnesses have drastically increased. Ticks can transmit multiple diseases in just one bite, that is why it is important to check your dog after walks and use preventative measures such as a natural tick repellent.
