Jocko Willink says Discipline=Freedom

This also applies to dogs, not just humans

A reframing needs to happen around rules and having control of dogs.

People think rules and structure aren’t fair or fun for the dog. The problem is their framing of this concept.

For me the more rules a dog follows and the more control I have of my dog the better of a life they experience.

If you can’t control your dog around distractions they’ll never be able to enjoy the parks and farmers market.

“Why do little dogs act worse than big dogs?” Is a question I get a lot. Go to any dog park and you’ll see the majority of time the little dogs running up and down the fence barking while the big dogs are just playing or when little dogs are pulling and barking on leash more than bigger dogs.

The reason is little dogs are treated differently and given different rules.

Treating a little dog like a baby and a big dog like an adult is like treating any human under 5 feet as a baby and any human over 5 feet as an adult. That’s NOT the basis of how you treat dogs differently. Treating a dog under 7 months as a puppy is fair, treating a 7 year old dog as a baby isn’t.

If you’re not sure, ask your grandparents. They are extremely independent and don’t want to be babied, if anything they are extremely stubborn and proud and for good reasons.

So just like you wouldn’t treat a 30 year old who is under 5 feet as a baby, don’t allow your little dog to do things you wouldn’t allow a big dog to do.

Just because a big dog does more damage than a little dog, doesn’t mean you should allow your little dog to develop all these negative behaviors.

Miko is in a “down” command in all 3 pictures. But the KEY difference is HOW she is laying down.

Normally there is a progression that dog chooses to lay down like in the first picture which is usually if there a bit more excited and ready to get up since it’s the easiest to get up. Then they get more comfortable as they settle in and rock over on their hip to get comfy and stay out. In the final picture is the full on “I’m going to take a nap/chill out completely.” I don’t teach each position as a command, the command is the first one and how comfortable they get tells me where their brain is out.

After practice the first position becomes the second usually within 2-3 seconds since with practice they know they’ll be here for a bit and want to get as comfy as possible.

With certain dogs who need help calming down I may specifically teach the second position as the down command to help them.

There are some BASIC things I explain to EVERY client. Doesn’t matter if it’s a golden doodle who needs some obedience or an aggressive dog.

I’m tired of hearing clients who spent thousands on training and didn’t get help and that’s the trainers fault when they don’t spend time with you teaching you

SHORT TERM results come from training the dog
LONG TERM results come from teaching the owners

1) Understanding how dogs can react to any situation (fight, flight, avoidance, acceptance)

2) The difference between behavior and obedience and when to focus on which (hint behavior always comes first. Most people say sit, down, stay to calm their dog down when if you just calm your dog down, they don’t need a command)

3) MAKE SURE they talk about the state of mind if the dog and how that can affect things

4) If you mention issues like rushing out the door, aggression, fear, jumping on people, etc… Make sure their answer isn’t “obedience obedience obedience” make sure they talk about the dogs behavior and how to teach the dog to be respectful of space and to calm them down. Obedience DOES NOT fix behaviors, it is a bandaid.

Teaching a sit doesn’t calm a dog down or stop from jumping, it’s a bandaid. But teaching the dog to NOT jump and be respectful and calmer allows the dog to do whatever they want, stand, sit, lay down, grab a toy, etc and still not jump.

Something to think about.

In the dog training world there is a big fight about Pure Positive vs Balanced training. We won’t go into the detail because this could be a long conversation, but basically Pure Positive is only treats, balanced means rewarding what you like something and having a consequence for when you don’t like. Rewards can be treats and praise, consequences can be a sq**rt bottle or pop on the leash.

The problem is when ideology overrides the well being for the dog, the dog suffers. Because YOU care more about doing things YOUR way than what the dog needs.

****A perfect example of pure positive is Sea World, but what are the things most people don’t realize that revolve around how they can get Killer Whales and Dolphins and other animals to do such amazing feats? Well first off you can’t really give a consequence to such an animal so of course it is all positive only.

BUT for the animal to be willing to do anything for food they have to always be hungry so the animals are kept hungry. (Idk about you but I’d rather get a consequence that lasts for 1 second than be hungry 24/7).

Next the animals have to be kept in a small area to be able to make sure there is nothing else competing for their attention and all the animals want to do is interact with the trainers to get food.

No animal is happy in containment and isolation.

Iv also never seen a Killer Whale trained in the wild, and definitely not repeated consistently.

So if you believe in Pure Positive and you agree with Sea World you should probably take a better look at your ideology because I’d rather consequences be involved but allow the animals to have freedom.

The more rules your dog follows, the more control of your dog you have, the more freedom and the more enjoyable things your dog can do. But if you can’t control your dog and your dog doesn’t listen to you, then your dog can’t experience the off leash freedom and going anywhere with you.

Every dog is different so more submissive and cooperate dogs you can get away with using treats more than uncooperative or more dominant dogs.

NOTE I use treats with all dogs but I also use consequences with all dogs since that’s life.

I DONT drive the speed limit because I get rewarded, I drive the speed limit to AVOID a ticket. A ticket is a consequence. Nothing in life is consequence free.

The part that makes consequences “abusive” or “wrong” is the emotion/intent/understanding behind it.

If you think consequences makes dog worse or fearful, you’ve never seen a proper trainer know how to do it correctly.

There are tons of terrible trainers out there and it’s sad but there are also tons of amazing trainers who care and put the dog first.

PUT THE DOG’S WELL-BEING OVER YOUR IDEOLOGY.

People who DON’T KNOW dog behavior see this and think he’s aggressive and dangerous. They think you need to give him a consequence for acting aggressive.

Simply because they only look at one or two things like he’s growling and showing teeth.

However people who KNOW dog behavior, know to look at the entire picture.

Is he leaning forward or backward?

Are his lips more puckered back or forward, are the ears up or back?

Is the tail up, middle, or down?

This dog is being very defensive out of FEAR. You don’t punish fear away, you earn their trust, show them this behavior isn’t going to get their way, and show them how to not overreact.

Dogs can do a number of things and they can all look the same but WHERE that behavior is coming from dictates the intent behind what you see. Now all dogs have teeth so yes, teeth vs skin, teeth will win.

That’s why when I deal with aggression I look primarily at intent.
