As we celebrate Independence Day, we encourage everyone to enjoy the holiday while keeping pets safe and comfortable. Loud booms and bright lights can be super scary for them, and more pets get lost today than any other day of the year.

Keep pets inside, double check those collars and tags, and give them a cozy, quiet spot to chill with soothing music or white noise.

Don't let four-year-old Rusty's thoughtful and cautious exterior fool you. Behind it is a loving, loyal dog who is worth the wait. Like many of us, Rusty appreciates a little wooing and once you're in his circle of trust, it's all love, cuddles and cozy vibes. He's all in once he lets you in.

Rusty is a breeze to care for. He's house trained, crate trained and prefers an adult-only home. He enjoys calm leash strolls and, as a self-aware, growth-minded pup, he's putting in the work to boost his confidence in new walking environments. Congratulations to Steve Caporizzo, our good friend and WTEN's chief meteorologist, who retires today! You've been helping Peppertree find homes for our dogs since we started in 1999. From Pet Connection to Pins for Pets and so much more, we're grateful for your incredible support for the local animal rescue community.

We've heard many tributes to you from our volunteers and share this one from a foster who said, "I've had a few dogs on Pet Connection. The wonderful thing about Steve is that he just gets dogs where they're at. He's always positive that there is a home waiting for that special dog."

We wish you all the best in your next chapter, Steve. And we'll see you soon on Pet Connection.

Introducing Simon, a smiley lab mix who loves car rides and adores people and walks. After losing his lifelong person, Simon landed in a shelter at age 10 - but even that heartbreak couldn't dim his sparkle and zest for life. And while he would love a forever home, his immediate need is a foster home so he can get out of boarding.

This happy, easygoing guy is housebroken, walks beautifully on a leash and brings a calm, joyful energy wherever he goes. And don't be fooled by that sugar face, Simon knows that age is just a number. He loves to run around a fenced yard and is eager to join you on outings. Our volunteers have busted him out of boarding for day trips and he's been a great adventure buddy.

After a brief introduction to a cat, we think feline friends may be okay with a thoughtful introduction. As for dog friends, Simon is open to meet and greets to make sure the vibe is right.

What Simon needs right now is a foster home. We pay for food, veterinary expenses and necessary grooming. And we provide tons of support to our foster homes. Please contact us if you'd like to get this sweet guy out of boarding. (He's always open to meeting potential adopters too!)

Happy Monday from Pika, a new member of the Peppertree pack. This cuddly one-year-old pup weighs 18 pounds and gets rave reviews from her foster mom. She's super sweet, housebroken and adores people and other dogs.

Pika's ideal day includes racing her foster siblings around the backyard, some light indoor play and then cuddling in your lap. She's besties with her 60-pound foster brother Stevie and loves to run laps with him.

Pika is an easy keeper who will thrive in a quiet home with a fenced yard and another dog. She's too timid to live with children, thinks car rides are overrated and hasn't been cat tested.

Introducing Honeydew and Dazzy, two bouncy and loving mini-poodle-mix puppies.

Both girls are 12 weeks old and are available for adoption separately. They're friendly, eager-to-please pups who look forward to joining their new families. They love zoomies, people, being part of the action and snuggling.

Outgoing Elvira is always up for an adventure. Just jingle her leash or start the ignition and she is up prancing and ready to explore the backyard, friends' house, or neighborhood park.

She gets along with every other dog she meets and has been polite in greeting humans, from toddlers to seniors. Other vertebrates, beware, though. Her hound/terrier/whatever instincts kick in and she is on the hunt! Chipmunks are her ultimate nemesis and just hearing their whistles sends her into high alert, so hang onto that leash!

Elvira is affectionate with everyone, licking hands, rolling over for belly rubs, and offering comforting kisses to her foster dog brother when thunderstorms make him tremble. She would be a great addition to a pack with one or more canine companions, but could also be at ease in a single household, as long as she gets lots of attention in between naps. She's very motivated by treats and praise, so she's learned some new manners and tricks during her time in foster care (unless a chipmunk is around).

Attention fans of puppy mayhem! Finley is looking for his forever home.

At just over four months old, this 10-pound mini-poodle mix manages to be ridiculously adorable, social, happy and playful all at the same time. Finley also enjoys:

✅chasing his tail
✅toys, car rides, leash walks and couch cuddles
✅entertaining people and other dogs with silly puppy antics
✅plotting world domination (like any self-respecting puppy)

Finley is eager to please and is making great strides with housebreaking. And although he loves dogs, he's too interested in cats to live with them.
