Pirate is getting his mojo back after a scary medical emergency. He had a very serious gastrointestinal issue arise, prompting his rock star foster parents to whisk him off to the emergency vet where he received diagnostic tests, medication and fluids. Naturally, all of this happened on Christmas Day.

We're grateful to his foster mom and dad and the veterinary staff for their prompt actions that quickly turned things around. We're also grateful to our donors who make it possible for Peppertree to pay for veterinary care in these situations.

And we're delighted, but not at all surprised, that our feisty friend bounced back. After all, you can't keep a good man down (particularly one named Pirate!).

Say hello to Boomer. This world-class snuggler enjoys walks, playing with toys, and the company of kids. Boomer also likes other dogs, particularly the calm, middle-aged to older variety who understand social cues. And he's a smart pup who is quickly learning commands and how to be a great family dog.

Two-year-old Ellie's life had a very inauspicious start in Texas where the little stray gave birth to a litter of puppies in an overcrowded shelter. After her adorable puppies were adopted, Ellie was slated for euthanasia. A trusted associate handpicked her for us based on her sweet temperament. Peppertree said yes, of course, because we always hate to see new moms left behind in an at-risk situation.

The timid little hound mix arrived at her Peppertree foster home while undergoing treatment for heartworm. She wasn't housebroken and was unfamiliar with the simple pleasures in life like walks, car rides and couches. Ellie's initial shyness melted away once she realized she was safe and loved in her foster home. She mastered housebreaking and her playful side started to shine through, adding even more joy to her endearing personality.

Soon enough a loving couple made Ellie an offer she couldn't refuse: a quiet home with a fabulous meal plan, abundant squeak toys, and a huge deck from which she could survey her backyard kingdom. Now Ellie spends her days sunning herself on the deck, watching squirrels and deer, hiding bones in the couch, and doing zoomies around the living room like a NASCAR driver. What a long way she's come from her rough start in Texas!

None of this could have happened for Ellie without resources to pay for her veterinary care. Our average veterinary expense per dog far exceeds our $300 adoption fee. Donations from our Peppertree community allow us to provide this care while continuing to charge an affordable adoption fee.

Izzy is another pup featured in our annual Holiday Appeal. Like all of our dogs, Izzy couldn't have been saved without the support of our Peppertree community. If her story inspires you to donate, we invite you to click on the link at the end of this post.

Five-year-old Izzy was rescued from a breeder where she likely had multiple litters and was confined to a cage or pen. She had clear signs of neglect and a lack of veterinary care. Izzy was infested with fleas, had infected eyes and ears, and a painful abscess in her mouth. The poor girl also had overgrown nails that curled under and pressed back into her paws and was weighed down with pounds of filth-ridden, matted fur. She was amazingly good-natured during the four hours that Peppertree volunteers repeatedly clipped and bathed her, after which she finally looked like a Cocker Spaniel.

Izzy then had 14 teeth removed, was vaccinated and spayed, and had a hernia repaired. Despite all of the vet visits and strange, new experiences (like car rides and grooming), Izzy was a sweet, affectionate, and frisky little cuddle bug right from the start. She loved to curl up with her humans and foster brother and go for walks in the park. She really blossomed when she met her adoptive mom and two canine siblings and was able to romp and play without pain.

Her new mom says that Izzy continues to shine. She loves attention and wandering around her fenced yard with her canine buddies, Peppertree alum Annabelle and Beezus. While she was quiet and reserved when she first arrived, Izzy has found her voice. She likes to be in charge, bossing Beezus around and chasing Annabelle in the yard. One of the best parts about rescuing a dog like Izzy is watching them become a confident and beloved family member. We couldn't be happier for this sweet girl.

Santa's making his naughty and nice list and checking it twice! Who can forget the time the Christmas tree "fainted" in Pirate's foster home and he was framed by his foster brothers?

Life is about second chances and finding a warm lap to sit on. So says tiny Elmer, a long-haired Chihuahua mix who had been a stray on the streets of Albany long enough to get scars on his neck from animal bites. When he arrived at Peppertree, 10-year-old Elmer was very scruffy and had advanced dental disease that was so painful he would yelp if you touched his mouth.

Despite his background of hardship, the sweet 10-pound dog was immediately affectionate with his foster mom. Each time she sat down, he immediately jumped into her lap where he would stay for pets, cuddles, kisses and naps. And when he was out and about, he seemed miffed if people didn't stop to pet him and would give them his deep "big dog" bark. Elmer loved people and attention and was obviously someone's beloved pet at one time.

While we sorted out his various medical issues and scheduled dental procedures, a couple who were prior Peppertree adopters applied for Elmer. He went to their loving home where he recovered from the trauma of living on the streets and from multiple surgeries that were necessary to repair the extensive damage caused by the prolonged dental infection.

Elmer's mom and dad say he's incredible and makes them so happy. They get a kick out of this spunky guy who acts like a lion and wants to make friends with everyone. He's as tough as they come, and that's undoubtedly how he survived on the streets long enough to get a second chance at life and find his happily-ever-after home.

Happy almost Thanksgiving! Peppertree alumni Teddy Graham and TJ (formerly Teddy Bear) are bursting with the holiday spirit.

Teddy Graham, who considers himself to be somewhat of a stick aficionado, is thankful for his very fine stick and his fabulous forever home. And TJ is grateful for his new home that includes Butter, his canine brother, and lots of love and squeak toys. What lucky pups!
