I have had numerous inquiries regarding incubation and incubators in the past several weeks. This was a response to one individual that posted recently; There are a lot of variables when it comes to incubation. Oftentimes, the incubator is blamed, when other variables that we can control are the problem. The condition and nutrition of the breeders are critical for having a successful hatch rate. Different species have different optimum parameters for incubation and those parameters can be different as the development of the embryo progresses. Some species eggs are much more sensitive than others, especially during the initial stages. There are different schools of thought regarding variations of the incubator temperatures. Some believe that it is a natural occurrence for the eggs to experience variations in the temperature because they experience that in nature when the parents leave the nest to eat and drink. I personally have found my best hatch percentages to occur when the incubator temperatures and humidity are stable. There are always some minor atmospheric fluctuations, but in a controlled environment, they are kept to a minimum. In most situations and especially with sensitive eggs, noise and vibration can be a major factor. Some incubators brands are better than others and individual incubators of the same brand and model can vary significantly. Oftentimes the parts in them can be changed out to eliminate excess noise and vibration re; fan motors and turning motors. I have purchased boxes of motors and sorted through them to find the best units in the group to use in my incubators. I monitor all variables continuously and have backup incubators in the event that one starts slipping. I have a designated incubator room where the temperature and humidity are regulated. The room is kept dark because I have found that light disturbs the embryo and can cause DIS. Candling and handling are kept to a minimum. The eggs are disinfected before placing in the incubator. The drawdowns are monitored, by experience, not weight, and wetter eggs are moved to a drier incubator during the later developmental stages. The eggs from most pairs have predictable attributes. Some tend to have thicker shells, some not. That is where humidity levels can compensate for more successful hatch rates. Dehumidifiers can play an important role in a humid environment. Some are different shapes, and depending on the type of rotations system, there are ways to compensate for problematic turning. Some aviculturists believe that the turning should be done by hand, which is more natural. This is very labor intensive, but can eliminate mechanical disturbances and issues with turning. Relying on the incubator manufacturers and distributors for mechanical information and direction does not always work well. Some are more informed than others, and some have little interest in doing anything but selling the units. With all that said , the best laid plans can go to waste. I say that from experience. I have also experienced catastrophe on more than one occasion. We have large industrial electronic attenuated generators for back up in the event of a power failure. During a hurricane, after losing power, our generator was compromised by the strong winds and rain and as a result we lost most of that seasons production. I had recently had back surgery and unfortunately was not able to "batten down the hatches" like I normally would have. We also experienced damage to our incubators, even though we had battery backups. Most people would have likely not noticed the damage. We rebuilt those and also purchased new state of the art incubators and 2 new generators just to lose the next seasons production due to incubator failure. The battery backups we were using at that time were not pure sine wave. I was told by the manufacturer that was the issue which caused the motherboards to crash. That issue was supposedly amplified due to the voltage conversion with the European models. The USA distributor was useless. Had it not been for the European tech support, with combined effort from the manufacturer, it would have been easy to blame the incubator. It was a several month process to have them go through the motherboards and determine the issue, but they did that and eventually replaced them. I replaced the battery backups, the problem was resolved, and it was a lesson for all of us. That being said, it is easy to lay blame when one is not cognizant of all of the facts. There is much to know and life is a continuing education!
