South Prairie school and FFA for inviting us in sharing the Ag industry.
Sometimes on a farm....
Sometimes you bring 300 feet of garden hose in to your bathroom every night to thaw so you can water livestock
Sometimes you have to plug the tractor in for 18+ hours before it will finally turn over and fire up
Sometimes the milk pump freezes multiple times in the middle of trying to milk cows
Sometimes the temperature reaches -20 degrees and the wind just won't quit
Sometimes you break open waters for them to freeze back over 10 minutes later
Sometimes the tractor gets stuck when you're just trying to put hay out
Sometimes the frustration freezes to your face as it leaks out of your eyes
Sometimes you call the vet and it still doesn't fix it
Sometimes you go to bed wondering if tomorrow will be any better
Sometimes your heart gets broken
Sometimes all your hard work feels like it doesn't even matter
But sometimes you stand outside under the stars when the winds finally calms and all you hear is the crunch of hooves on the snow and munching of hay. And sometimes the sun comes out the next morning and you feel like it's getting better.
The one thing that is always true is that we were chosen for this life. Farmers were entrusted with this responsibility because we are strong enough to keep going when it gets hard and have the faith to know that we are doing what we are called to do. So as we hang up the coveralls and coats and dry the gloves and hats and warm our cold skin, we crawl into a warm bed and rest to wake and do it all again tomorrow.
And so it begins.... remember to grab all your calving supplies
I think it's safe to say that winter is showing up at the end of the week...hopefully it's not 6 weeks of subzero
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas
Happy Thanksgiving to all of clients

Histophilosis, or Histophilus somni–associated disease, is a common disease in North American cattle. It also has been reported to occur sporadically in beef and dairy cattle worldwide. H somni predominantly causes an acute, often fatal, septicemia that can involve the respiratory, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, or nervous systems, either singly or together in confined cattle. H somni is considered a commensal of bovine mucous membranes. Nasal and urogenital secretions are believed to be sources of the organism. Recently weaned calves are at higher risk of infection and death from histophilosis than are previously weaned older calves, yearlings, or mature animals. The risk of infection and disease with H somni is highest early in the feeding period, with “high-risk” calves in confinement establishing peak titers to H somni at ~21–23 days after arrival, suggesting exposure likely occurs post-arrival at the feedlot from resident cattle. There is considerable evidence that high titers do not confer immunity in all cases. Sudden death is usually the first indication of H somni infection in a group of confined animals and is often mistaken by the stock attendants as evidence of a digestive tract upset such as bloat. Antibiotic treatment may change the progression of the disease, resulting in more chronicity. A profound depression has been described as the most noticeable clinical sign of encephalitic histophilosis. Other findings are determined by the system(s) involved and may include rapid respiration, stiffness, muscle weakness, ataxia, lameness, and severe behavioral changes. A major hindrance to successful treatment of individual histophilosis cases is the difficulty in identifying affected animals early in the course of disease because of its often rapidly fatal nature. Antimicrobial treatment is most effective in the early stages of disease.
With majority of the fall work occurring at our clients places -- we took the time to take the barn chute over to Jim s welding to get the floor replaced. Thank you Jim's Welding for helping us keep our equipment in top shape
