》Adios, Trousers《

Today marks the next part of Trousers' journey, heading to Oklahoma with Robin Frankenberg before going to Kim Paulsen Scruggs. In true Trousers fashion, he eagerly posed for the camera to advertise his latest apparel line (check out Robin's shirt!), then he happily loaded in the trailer.

Go do big things, Trousers.

If you'd like to follow his journey, he has his own page now: ADIOS Trousers

The horse always comes first. Always.
30/08/2024

The horse always comes first.
Always.

“Put the horse first.

Easy to say. Hard to do.

Putting the horse first requires commitment. It requires integrity. And patience. And energy. And money. And oh, does it require time.

Putting the horse first means earlier mornings and later nights. It means quality feed plans and the best hay that you can buy. And extra brushing so that coats gleam and manes and tails shine.

Putting the horse first means that you buy three extra bags of shavings for your stall at the horse show (yes, I know they're expensive!!), because even though you can "get by" with two, you want to do right by your horse. If you don't want to stand on concrete all weekend, why would she?

Putting the horse first means that you have a good working relationship with a quality equine vet. It means that every horse gets the best quality of care that you can afford to give it. Your performance horse is an athlete. Treat her like one.

And when your vet says, "Rest her for 10-14 days," be generous and give her the 14. Even if it's inconvenient. Even if you've aleady paid your stalls and entries. Even if it's the last thing you want to hear.

Putting the horse first means that if you've been rained out of the arena for two weeks and your horse isn't fit, you don't haul to the horse show. You choose to be fair to the horse and keep her home, instead.

It also means that if you haul three hours to the horse show only to find that the ground is dangerous, you load up and go home. It takes discipline, but you don't jeopardize what you want in the moment for the long-term confidence, health, and soundness of your horse.

Putting the horse first means that no saddle, no halter, no buckle, no trophy, no paycheck comes before the well-being of your equine partner. No matter what.. And it ain't an easy row to hoe.

Many will ride. Many will compete. Many will win. But few will be horse(wo)men.

Don't just be a competitor. Be better”

It is always fun to see one of our former horses in a printed publication!! This is from the race where Friday took 2nd out of 73 entries.

》She's Barely French Takes 2nd Overall!《

Last year, we sold She's Barely French, aka Black Friday, to miss Jacee for her next highschool all-around horse. Black Friday was very lightly started on the pattern; Jacee has spent the time finishing and seasoning her on the barrels, and also has started roping on her.

Jacee's sister, Josie, jump rode Friday at a barrel race, placing 2nd out of 73 entries, with only 3 horses being in the 1D.

We are so proud of Jacee and the work she's put into Friday to get her to this point, and are excited to see how far they go together!

Definitely a neat view and a great tool to show where the struggles were, what worked and what we can improve. I missed my intended line in a couple places and the video doesn't lie, a few shots were way out of range but we hope to improve!
Also the view of the dust trail is clearly the high point.

》Considering Applications《

Trousers is considering applications for a possible new home to set him up for a wildly successful futurity career and beyond, where he will continue to receive all of the good belly scratches.

If you're committed and dedicated to his upbringing, training, seasoning, and eventually adding him to your or your trainer's futurity string in the future, please reach out for an interview; considerations made to a proven futurity program.

Since Trousers doesn't have his own cell phone, you can contact me directly on Facebook or at 605-670-0126. We will be extremely selective in considering a new performance home for him from the received applications, as we want to see him land in a home that would offer him the most successful future, beyond what we know we could offer if he stays here.

Trousers will be handling the in-person interviews, located in Vermillion, South Dakota. Five digits; the first number is a two.

》Siestas And Fiestas《

This 2023 c**t was our last foal out of Showgirl (Cinderella's dam), and is a 3/4 sibling to Cinderella as well. Although we sure wish he had been a filly, Showgirl gave us quite the c**t... here he is in his everyday clothes.

Mindfulness, riding with intent, and interacting purposefully are all important factors when it comes to your horses.

Mindfulness, riding with intent, and interacting purposefully are all important factors when it comes to your horses.

If while cleaning stalls, we think only of the ride that awaits us, thus hurrying to get the stalls out of the way as if they were a nuisance, then we are not “cleaning the stalls to clean the stalls.”

What’s more, we are not alive during the time we are cleaning stalls. In fact we are completely incapable of realizing the miracle of life while standing in the barn. If we can’t clean the stalls, the chances are we won’t be able to enjoy our ride either.

While riding, we will only be thinking of other things, barely aware of the horse underneath us. Thus we are sucked away into the future—and we are incapable of actually living one minute of life. -

Original quote from The Miracle of Mindfulness ~Thich Nhat Hanh

People always ask us for "drills," and are often surprised when we say that we don't really do drills... we focus on getting them broke and resistance-free, allowing us to handle them as needed while allowing the horse to have confidence in their foot placement.

We cannot stress this enough!

We cannot stress this enough!

So many people say:

”I don’t want to Futurity because it will blow the horse up.”
“I don’t want to put the pressure on them.”
“I want a long term horse.”

I’ve heard it all. What people don’t talk about though... what happens when you go too SLOW???

•What happens when your horse isn’t challenged regularly.
•When his mind is numb.
•When he doesn’t care.
•When he can aimlessly go through the motions to please you.

>>>This might not be shown in any type of “bad behavior,” but I can dang sure tell the difference sitting on a horse craving to learn and one that’s just ready for this class to be over.

I see this wayyyy more than the horses being blown up.

So because we compare training horses to people here, to put it in perspective... when you were in school, do you remember attending classes that you wanted to be in, and attending ones just for attendance? Classes where you were engaged to learn, and classes you couldn’t wait to be over? It’s the SAME THING.

Sometimes going slower or taking longer is not the answer. Go at the speed YOUR horse needs.

“The hardest part of training your c**ts is watching everyone else’s.” Go at your own speed. Go at your horses speed. Don’t get stuck on “perfect.” Keep the mind sharp.

05/06/2024

Educate yourself—if you don’t understand, spend time learning.

Nothing is more frustrating than couch jockeys that throw their opinions around and have no idea what they are talking about.

Barrel racing is different than other disciplines. We use different bits and our saddles are designed specifically for going fast. Our horses have different temperaments and training for control at speed is different than training for western pleasure or English events.

Horsemanship is always important.

The training process is going to be different if you have one horse to train and all the time in the world when compared to training 15-20 and on a timeline. Unfortunately, some horses do not get the foundation that would be ideal before starting more specialized training. There are times we have to find a way to get a horse trained that is not easily taught or as willing as we would like.

Be careful judging if you haven’t walked in that trainer’s shoes on those difficult horses.

Congratulations to John Erhardt on winning the "Free Ride" scholarship. It was a tough deal finding a group who knew all the nominees and even tougher to make a decision with so many deserving.
What was said about John:
Quiet but just always there working
We've watched his progress online all winter and they have worked HARD
Always helping behind the scenes
and much, much more.
Thanks to everyone and we will see you in a few weeks.

Head over to the Eastern Iowa CMSA page and check out the "Free Ride" contest detailed under the clinic post.

Share a pic and details about why your nominees deserves a "Free Ride". Do they volunteer at shoots? Work behind the scenes? Work hard to improve at all times? You choose what makes a great nominee but be sure and share on that pages post.

We are very appreciative of the opportunity to have the event and look forward to seeing the great nominees.
