Happy birthday to the little soul that made us parents.

5 years has flown by

You’ve been our little farm buddy since farming year 2 while you grew, year 3 you were born and joined us at markets and in the field. Year 4 I slung you around on my back. Now here we are in farming year 7 and you help us harvest, sell at market and make our csa members buy your popsicles and stickers

All of the tomato plants have been tucked into their new home for a little over a week. They were looking incredible and we were so ready to get them in but whew is it ever a big job!
It starts in January, choosing all the varieties we want to grow for the coming season

March we seed them and care for them under lights

April we pot them up and move them to the farm where they spend the next 4 weeks sizing up and developing strong root systems

May we harden them off over a week by bringing them in and about of the greenhouse in longer increments of time until they finally get put into the fields

We’ll prune them bi-weekly and see our first harvest mid July.

In August we’ll be absolutely swimming in tomatoes

And mid to late October we either loose them to the frost or we pull them out to start prepping for winter

Then we start planning for the following year. Writing down what we liked, what sold, what was fun, what the chefs liked, the ones nobody liked, the ones that cracked easily etc…

Tomatoes for us have been an incredibly fun and rewarding crop to grow. We love experimenting with different heirloom varieties and finding out which ones make our customers the most excited.

This year we’ve kept your favorites and have added a staggering amount of new heirloom varieties. We’ll have more tomatoes than ever before 🤞

6 weeks folks - and then we should be sinking our teeth into fresh tomatoes 🍅 🎉

Farmer appreciation post 🤍

Grateful for Lenny. On Market days, Lenny is up at 4am, at the farm before 5 and loaded up to the market by 545. Sets up in the cold, rain (sometimes snow) and heat.

He’s the nicer one of the two of us. If you’re feeling a little snarky at the markets - Lenny will give ya a smile and help you regardless.

Every direct seeded crop is seeded by him from March until our final seedlings in August.

Thanks Lennard ✋ you’re my favorite

P.s today is international naked gardening day so get out there ya weirdos and plant some crops or w**d some garden space.

Spring CSA week 2/10

What a week it was! We welcomed our first energy exchangers onto the farm, we prepped for our third market of the season, we went to a concert, took our kids to soccer, transplanted outdoor kale, we seeded, w**ded, prepped beds, w**ded some more and it was awesome.

Grateful for a life that when the week ends - we can *mostly* look back and say “that was a really good week”

Help wanted 🌱

We’re looking to fill 3 rolls this season on the farm.

1x someone to fill a 30hr a week position of farm hand, $20/hr. This person will work alongside us and independently harvesting, packaging, w**ding, bed prep etc.. Ideally we’d be looking for May-October but can be flexible with start and end dates for the right candidate

2x persons who want to work in exchange for a veggie box. This position is flexible and we will work with you to find a steady 3 hour chunk of time to help us with w**ding or packaging independently

If this is you - send us a message! We’re so excited for this next season of growing food for our community

Todays task - harvest hundreds of pounds of in the ground over wintered carrots.

We’ve experimented this year with covering some beds with a thick leaf mulch, having beds with extra large carrots and beds with regular carrots to see what’s held up the best after a long cold winter.

Carrots that are overwintered in the ground are sweet and crunchy. They will not store as long in your fridge as new season carrots but will be happy for a week or 2.

We will be bringing rainbow and orange carrots and juicing carrots 🥕 see you this Saturday from 8-1 at the

P.s this carrot washer was built by Bruce and we use it for all our topped carrots and bulk topped beets

Mark your calendar! April 13th will be our first of the season.

The very first outdoor market is THIS SATURDAY April 6th and we’ll be there as volunteers and customers, joining the vendors the following week.

We’re so excited for the market in its new home at and can’t wait to see you all soon!

You’ve been waiting for Spring signups and you were a part of last years CSA? Check you emails!

Spring boxes run with a smaller amount of members so unfortunately if you weren’t a csa member last year we will fill up all the spots.
BUT we are opening an extra 20 spots for summer boxes which start mid June and run until mid August. Send me a DM with your email and I’ll send you the info in May ☀️ 🌱

Years ago we used to offer our greens as a zero waste option where customers at our markets could bring their own container to fill and we would weigh it and charge them a bit less than our already bagged greens. Some world events caused us to have to put that on hold but we’re curious if you’d like that option back.
One of the most frustrating parts of spring markets for me is how much plastic we have to use and I’d love to fine a way to circumnavigate this.

All of our large bags are compostable BUT the problem with compostable bags is they need to be composted in a compost facility and my guess is most of those bags are ending up in the trash anyways

If you’ve been around for long enough - we did do a zero waste CSA season where everything was put in or mason jars but we couldn’t keep up with it due to a few factors (items not being returned being the biggest one)

Would you choose fill your own container or continue purchasing already bagged for convenience?

Today marks the first day of Spring and we’re incredibly excited to welcome longer and warmer days.

The fields and greenhouses and filling up with greens, root vegetables and onions. We’re a couple week away from our first outdoor markets and our first CSAs

Under our grow lights are all our tomatoes, peppers, ginger, kale, kohl’s, fennel and so much more.

This is our 7th season of full time farming. We get one shot every Spring to get it right. Some things in our control and many things out of our control. Taking all our past mistakes and successes and tying them into the new season.
We’ve looked over our scribbled notes of ideas, lists from last season of things we wished we’d done differently and voice memos to each other - to make this Spring run as smoothly as possible and to lay the foundation of the rest of our season

We love growing food for you 🥬 🌱

Hi 👋 I’m Rebecca and 1/2 of Little Schack Farm

1. Before farming I taught scuba diving, was an insurance broker, a doula and a server before that.

2. I fell in love with plants and being outside by growing up beside my mama in the garden but I wasn’t raised in a farming family

3. I have a silent laugh

4. I could eat olives, cheese and tomatoes everyday

5. When I spend money - I count it as how many bunches of carrots something cost (multiples of 5, something that costs $100 is 20 bunches of carrots)

6. I wish I could scuba dive everyday 🧜‍♀️

7. My favorite farm task is harvesting cherry tomatoes and my least favorite is harvesting radishes

What did I miss 😆

Today is the day we start our first veggies for the 2024 season.

Today I’ll be starting all the lettuce you’ll see in our salad mix at the April and in our Spring CSAs.

The seeds will be indoors in our basement grow room for the next 3-4 weeks and then transplanted into our greenhouses. (We’ve added another greenhouse this year which means more spring veggies 🌱)

To the growers - we’re actually moving away from our paper pot transplanter for salad mix and going back to 128’s. We found that we got larger and more consistent lettuce heads. We’ll still use the PP for other spring crops but with only 1 shot at getting spring crops right - we’re going back to our tried and true method 🥬

Cherry tomatoes are my favorite crop to plan for.
11 varieties is what we started out with and we’ve narrowed it down to our favorite 9 with 1 new trial variety each season.

In July and August we harvest 3 times a week to really encourage heavy fruiting.
Tuesday harvest for CSAs
Friday morning harvest for Saturday market
Sunday morning harvest for Sunday market

This season we had cherry tomatoes from July-end of October.

We start each little seed in March and get them into the ground in May so there’s really only 4 months a year that we aren’t taking care of tomatoes!

It’s usually Rebecca that harvests the cherry toms (along with the boys) while Lenny harvests the big tomatoes. 🍅

A Halloween love story

This cutie and I met at a Halloween party in 2004 when we were in grade 9

We went trick or treating together (let the big kids trick or treat!) and started chatting on msn for the next few months as we went to different school. We would see eachother once a week at a youth group.

We got to attend the same Hugh school for grace 10-12 and got married when we were 20.

We’ve traveled the world, had countless jobs, gone through incredible hardships, laughed a lot, started and ended businesses and had a couple kids. It’s a beautiful messy life.

All this to say - let the big kids trick or treat. Not because they might find their spouse but because it’s an opportunity to still be kids in the wild interm of childhood and adulthood.
