A letter in regards to the new LVT program:

Hello NFVS Members!

I am sorry to bother you, but I am reaching out to you with a (somewhat) urgent request. We recently learned that two institutions, SUNY Delhi and SUNY Alfred have submitted letters of opposition to Trocire’s vet tech program to NYSED. The main reason both institutions are opposing our program is because they claim that our program will decrease their enrollment numbers. In reality, a vet tech program at Trocaire, which is designed to enroll approximately 48 students/year, will not change the enrollment at Delhi or Alfred. Medaille had slightly over 300 students total in their 3 vet tech programs when they closed a year ago. Alfred was unable to accept the number of Medaille students who wished to transfer to Alfred because they did not have the faculty or staff to support a greater number of students. Our program at Trocaire will only be enrolling a fraction of the number of students that Medaille had. Clearly, there is still a need for a vet tech program in the Buffalo area.

At this time, NYSED will decide if Delhi and Alfred have provided strong enough evidence for a case against our program, and if so, a public hearing will be scheduled. If a public hearing is scheduled, we will not receive our anticipated approval by NYSED in July, and the program will not start this fall.

If you feel strongly that WNY is in need of a vet tech program to provide the region with qualified veterinary technicians, I ask that you please reach out to the NYS veterinary board to express your concern. Stephen Boese, the executive secretary of the veterinary board, is aware of our concerns and I believe he is in our corner, but it would be helpful if the veterinary board could hear from the veterinary community in Buffalo regarding the local need for veterinary technicians.

If you know anyone 14-21 years old interested in animals invite them to join the 2024 Explorers! They start the 2024 season this coming Wednesday at 7pm at the Canisius University Science Hall on Main Street in Rm 1013A (Rm 1013B is its adjoining room). Our first speakers are James Dircksen DVM who will speak about small animal practice and Mary Masman (a former Explorer and currently a first year vet student at Cornell) who will discuss her education experiences and her journey getting into vet school.
We hope you can make it. Please share this with your friends, classmates, teachers and school guidance counselors. Anyone 14-21 years old can participate and the cost remains $45 for the season. We have a lot of fun speakers and trips in the works. Parking is in the lot off Main Street near the M&T Bank.
