- Des*xed males are less likely to roam, minimizing the risk of getting lost or injured outdoors.
- Reduce inappropriate spraying or urination inside the home.
- Minimizes the risk of contracting diseases spread through mating.
- Helps to prevent unwanted litters and contributes to a healthier feline population.

Hi furry friends owners!

If you are bringing your cats into the des*xing clinic, please make sure you have carriers that are secure and safe for cats and handlers! 🐾
Ideal carriers are ones in the photos below (not the amazon box🙅‍♀️).

Also, it is important to carry the carrier from the bottom to be extra safe!

We appreciate your efforts to help control the cat population🐱🐱

How to s*x your cat:

A little bit of investigation is needed.
If they are males you should be able to palpate their testicles, just below their a**s. Image below to make it more clear!
If you are still uncertain, book them in for what you most think they are and let us know you are uncertain. We will confirm the s*x before surgery and let you know

All cats that are des*xed through the programme will automatically receive a FREE microchip and FREE registration with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register courtesy of the SPCA!

A microchip is a tiny device about the size of a grain of rice that gets placed under the skin between your cat’s shoulder blades. If your cat ever gets lost and is taken to an animal control agency, veterinarian, or other rescue organisation, they can scan for the microchip number and have NZCAR get in touch with you to make sure your cat gets home safely.

Currently, we are fully booked in the months of April and May - thank you!

Let’s talk about cat carriers and safely transporting your cats to and from our clinic!

Carriers provide safety for both you and your cat during transport, and often give a cat a sense of security by being hidden in a secure, closed container.

There are all kinds of different types of carriers to choose from, but the main things to consider when choosing a carrier is that it is sturdy, secure and stable for your cat, and easy for you to carry!

When carrying any cat cage use both hands - one on the bottom of the carrier and one around the side or top so that it can be held close to your body. ALWAYS keep a hand on the bottom of your cage – this minimises the chance of the bottom falling out and your cat escaping, which can happen even with the best cat carriers.

Being in a carrier can be stressful for your cat, especially if they are not used to being in one. The good news is that cats can be trained to use a carrier and there are ways you can help your cat to learn to associate the carrier with positive experiences and to feel comfortable routinely entering it voluntarily.

Check out this video for ways you can help your cat to learn to love its carrier.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RGY5oSKVfo

We recognise that not everyone has access to an ideal cat carrier and so we have spare cat carriers at the clinic – on the day of your appointment if you are concerned that your carrier is not sturdy enough to keep your cat contained, keep them in the car and come and talk to one of our friendly volunteers about how to safely get your cat into the clinic!

UPDATE: Our little adventurer has been reunited with his family 😊

A kitten was found outside the Massey university veterinary teaching hospital last night, a little hungry but in good condition. We believe this is the kitten that escaped from the car prior to their appointment over the weekend. If are the owner of the kitten, could you please send us an email with: the name, age, description of the kitten and the circumstances of their escape so we can confirm this is your pet. (bonus if you can email us some pictures). We would love to reunite this kitten with their family.

Wondering when you should get your fluffy friend des*xed? We're here to help you figure that out, so you can book your cat's appointment with us soon.

Here at the des*xing clinic, we recommend des*xing your cat as early as possible once they weigh 1.5kg. That's usually around 14 – 16 weeks old. Early age des*xing is beneficial for both females and males without negative side effects, but we welcome older cats too!

Other things to think about before getting your cat des*xed:
• For females it is best to des*x them before their first heat (before 5-6
months old) to reduce the risk of mammary cancer
• If your cat is pregnant, we can still des*x her – get in contact with us about
this if you are concerned
• If your cat has just had kittens, we can des*x her 2 weeks after she has weaned
her kittens

For any further questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with us 🐱

ABOUT US:

We are a volunteer run organisation for the community. We only des*x cats and kittens for clients that must have a community service card, gold card, or be a full time student. Kittens must be 15 weeks old/1.5kg to be des*xed. Female cats are $20, and this includes lifetime microchip and registration. Male cats are $10, and this also includes lifetime microchip and registration. We also des*x cats only weekends, since we volunteer our very limited free time to help the community. We are full time veterinarians, vet techs and nurses, and full time students with part time jobs. We have des*xed over 1,200 cats in the past two years!
