North Florida Chapter of The National Canine Cancer Foundation The North Florida Chapter of the NCCF is committed to eliminating cancer in dogs. Please join me in this fight. Together, we are the cure.

This chapter was created in memory of my best gal, Chesney Cheeseball who lost her battle to Amelanotic Malignant Melanoma in January 2012. Our main goal is to raise donations through various events to help fund canine cancer research. By doing so, we will raise community awareness about this disease and help educate pet owners about canine cancer, treatment, or other available options.

The 3rd Annual Walk has reached the half way mile market but we have made it all the way to our original fundraising goal of $12,000! Everyone who is walking is working hard to fight cancer in dogs.

It's not time to stop though, I know we can raise much more awareness and much more funds! If you haven't joined this year's walk, now is the time - be part of the cure -

or pinkpawlove.funraise.org is the link to register.

The battle against canine cancer in your own pup is shocking. You have to learn alot in a short amount of time to make some of the hardest decisions of your life for your best friend. Remember, you are NOT ALONE. There are always friends and family who will support you, don't be afraid to ask. The National Canine Cancer Foundation is also here for questions or just to tell your story and see that others are fighting along side of you.

Pictures is what I have left. I loved taking pictures and I’m so grateful I have so many! This was 13 years ago!! I can hardly believe it’s been that long and I still know exactly what she was doing. She was staring at a bird that landed next to the window. She had such focus on the things she was interested in. Emma was intense and silly. Her attitude was my challenge and I learned so much. We lost her to cancer 6 years ago but she is clearly still part of our family. Our kids who were toddlers@when she died still remember her and talk@about her. Cancer is mean but it can’t keep us from remembering all the little things that summed up to a huge love and a lot of Fun!

It's CHECK YOUR DOG day! Early detection is a big component if your dog is ever faced with a cancer diagnosis. This is why we put a lot of effort into this day each month. During your checks, if you find something suspicious, make an appointment with your vet to rule out anything serious that will need immediate attention. We are our dogs best advocate and knowledge is power. Check Your Dog cards are a great tool to help spread awareness on what to look for. You can find them at https://wearethecure.org/shop/check-your-dog-cards/ if you would like some to help spread the word.

Meet Phoebe through the eyes of her Mom Stephanie:
I adopted Phoebe exactly 6 years ago in March 2016 when she was 7 months old. I was at an extremely low point in my life; recently unemployed from my dream job, and in desperate need of something to fill the hole in my heart. Enter Phoebe. Once we got to know each other, we became soulmates. Phoebe and I both suffer from anxiety, but we know that with each other we are safe and loved.
One day I noticed Phoebe wasn’t eating much and was also drinking a lot more than normal. The next day I noticed her lymph nodes in her neck seemed enlarged. I made an appointment with her vet, thinking maybe she had an infection that we’d clear up in no time. After a very quick exam, the vet looked up and said, “we may be looking at lymphoma…cancer”. I couldn’t believe it, cancer was never on my radar. She’s only 6! I barely remember most of the next few days, but by the end of the week we had an appointment with a renowned oncologist who confirmed my worst fear: high-grade t-cell lymphoma. With aggressive chemo, we were facing maybe a year left together.
A piece of wisdom I would share is that you have to trust your gut. I saw a couple of things that were out of the ordinary for her, and jumped on it right away. I just felt like something was wrong. Early detection is KEY!

Blackmyst Prince of Winterfell "Brandon"

Elizabeth has joined the Walk/Run in memory of her boy Brandon. Brandon was 6 years old and in his prime as and dog. He and Elizabeth had such a strong bond and made a great team.

Brandon came up with a fever of unknown origin and also stopped wanting his food or treats. This was during the height of the pandemic, so getting into appointments quickly was so very hard. She was able to do alot of testing at her work, because she was a vet tech, but it still took 3 weeks to get in to see an oncologist.

She finally found the source, a bleeding mass in his left ear, which she found out was a high grade . By the time chemotherapy was started he only made it three weeks.

Elizabeth said the greatest lesson she learned was to really enjoy every moment, because you really don't know how long you have with those you love.

It's PAWblic Announcement Day! We know that most of you already know about the dangers of Xylitol when it comes to our dogs but just in case you don't, here's a quick announcement. Xylitol, also known as BIRCH SUGAR, wood sugar & birch bark extract can be very toxic to our best friends. From gum to certain peanut butters and many things in between, we have to watch out for them. Make sure you read the labels! If products in your home have these ingredients place them in a safe place or better yet, give them a nice PAW out the door.

Adventure Awaits you on this year's Virtual Walk. So many discoveries to be made, both in cancer research and treatments as well as in you. Walking to make an impact on provides you with a chance to explore your story, to grieve, if you have suffered loss. Then to triumph, because though you might have been powerless to get rid of the cancer, you CAN do something to further the continuing fight for better treatments, early detection, and hopefully one day a cure.

Nancy shared her story of her cancer survivor, Diego and how she found his nasal tumor.

"Diego is our forever puppy. He is playful and even at age 14 he will chase a leaf blowing in the wind, a birdie or a squirrel in the yard or his brother Doug! He loves long naps with soft blankets and long leisurely walks that allow him to sniff every blade of grass possible.
In October of 2020 Diego’s voice changed. He also would reverse sneeze which we were familiar with but again the sound changed in tone. I was absolutely sure he must have sniffed something up his nose. I called my Vet and they did an X-ray. There was a small shadow. Our vet gave us several scenarios. We chose to take Diego to Cornell University where an MRI revealed a nasal tumor. Cornell was honest. Prognosis wasn’t great. They were able to offer several treatments mostly palliative in nature. They then talked about a treatment called Cyberknife. It was not available through them but they gave us some options in Pittsburg, NYC, New Jersey & Malvern, PA.
We took Diego to Blue Pearl Malvern. We had an initial MRI to “map” the exact location of the tumor. Then we stayed in a hotel nearby for 3 days. High doses of radiation were delivered in a very precise way as to cause minimal damage to healthy tissue. The Doctors and team who saved him were amazing! Diego had no side effects except a little color change of the fur on his nose.
Here we are 14 months later. We are grateful every day for the time we have with Diego. We continue to manage the cancer with the help of his Oncology team & his family Vet team. He takes Piroxicam & Yunnan Baiyao to help keep things at bay. His 12-month check showed a significant decrease in the original size of the tumor.
Our goal has always been to give Diego quality of life. The quantity has been a very appreciated bonus! Diego continues to enjoy his daily walks, playing with Doug, snuggling his humans & cookies!

Sweet Emma our girl, trying on our very first shirt for National Canine Cancer Foundation. This is long before we knew she would leave us because of Hemangiosarcoma.

Then there is this year's Valentine's shirt. When you shop for Valentine's Day, shop online at a store where your money will also go to fighting cancer in dogs.
