Here for Cats Cat rescue for Surrey. We are always seeking supporters, helpers and funds to enable us to carry out our work.

Here for Cats is a small rescue group, established in 2014 by a small number of dedicated and experienced volunteers to help cats in need in the Surrey area by providing shelter, warmth, food, veterinary care and love, and then finding suitable new homes. The charity has no permanent base but relies on a small network of fosterers, garden pens and the kindness of local catteries. We would like our

own purpose built shelter but in the current economic situation and uncertainties we are concentrating on using the money available to help as many animals as possible in the most economical way.

HERE FOR CATS CAT-CHUP

Fortunately, after a couple of weeks with very little interest in the array of adorable cats we had available, homing has picked up.

Without interviews to conduct, we were able to turn our attention to fundraising activities. Like all rescues, we are facing increasing pressure on our funds. Look out for the launch of our new sponsorship scheme for the three pens we have in a cattery on the Surrey/Hampshire border. These pens perform a vital role in our rescue and a welcome refuge for cats coming into our care. We rely on the generosity of the public to fund our work.

To make a donation or set up a regular contribution, please click HOW YOU CAN HELP/MAKE A DONATION on the Here for Cats Website.

CATS REHOMED

BLOSSOM came from the East End of London as a young and nervous stray. After an extended stay in our care, and thanks to her Fosterer, she became more confident. She is flourishing with an adult family in Aldershot who had lost their much loved, 15-year-old tabby.

ATHENA was originally handed in as a pregnant stray to Willett House Vets. The following day she gave birth to five kittens to whom she was a great mum. Now neutered and no longer having any responsibilities, she has gone off to an independent and carefree life with a couple in Guildford.

PRICILLA, the long-haired tortie, came from a multi-cat household and has been homed as company for a cat previously adopted from HFC.

BABY (now renamed Dennis) who is Pricilla’s son, after recovering from a necessary dental, has gone to be a companion to an elderly Sh*tzu.

HOLLY, a sweet, young tabby girl, was one of a pair not coping with the arrival of a baby. She is now making music in Shepperton with a couple who are classical musicians.

ASH has recovered well from his leg amputation and went off to his new owner who had waited patiently for his recovery. She had fallen in love with his picture and story when we first posted him on our page, and when they met, the attraction was mutual!

RECENT INTAKES

JULIETTE has been a very unexpected intake. She was presented to us for neutering as a one-year-old, male ginger, but she turned out to be a 5-month-old, female tabby with a badly damaged eye. Sadly, it was not possible to save her eye which had to be removed, which came as an unexpected expense. This little girl is now recovering in a foster home.

SUNNY, a large, 4-year-old, male, tabby has arrived into care with a new Fosterer in Tilford. He was signed over reluctantly as his owner had to travel overseas regularly to visit family and Sunny had become unhappy with the amount of time he was spending in a cattery.

We moved JACK from the cattery to new Fosterers which has made way for 8-year-old tabby and white BRUNO. His owner has reluctantly asked us to rehome him as she has been forced to move into a flat and he is a very outdoorsy type.

CAT OF THE WEEK

Who is going to be the lucky family to adopt young cat LUCY, pictured here? Aged between 4-5 months’ old, this jet black, slinky girl has put her past as a stray behind her. We feel sure that her gentle and loving nature, together with her typical kitten antics, will capture the heart of anyone who meets her. Check her full details on our website (Adopt/Meet The Cats) or on our page.

BRUNO

This is Bruno, who is male, tabby & white and 8 years’ old. He has come into HFC care after his owner reluctantly had to downsize her home to a flat, leaving him without the outside access he loves.

We have taken Bruno into the care of our cattery space located on the Surrey/Hampshire border where he has settled in nicely, now approaching our Carers and being happy to accept a fuss.

Bruno is a large, confident and independent cat who loves to spend his days outside and is very easy to care for. As he is content to spend some time on his own during the day, he has potential to live with someone who works away from home on some days, but he could also live alongside a family with respectful children, aged 5+.

Bruno is not particularly playful, often appearing puzzled when his previous companion would race around in pursuit of a feather wand or ball! He can be choosy about the feline company he keeps and is scared of dogs, so he is looking for a home where he can enjoy being an only pet.

Bruno has previously been neutered and microchipped. Whilst in our care, we have arranged for him to receive a health check, first vaccination and preventative flea and worm treatment. He is now ready to meet potential adopters.

If you would like to offer Bruno a happy home that has safe outside space for him to enjoy, why not press the golden buzzer for this lovely boy and put him through to your short-list by completing our application form below?! Thank you.

TOM

This is Tom, who is small, male, black & white and 8 years’ old. He has come into HFC foster care because his owner sadly became unwell and has reluctantly had to move into permanent care.

Tom is a friendly cat, who loves to be the centre of attention. He is very affectionate, gently handing you his paw to let you know when he would like a fuss and, once he gets to know you, “making biscuits” on your lap. He loves his food (particularly treats) and to lie by a warm fire.

Tom can be a little enthusiastic when playing with his favourite fishing rod toy and balls and, therefore, has potential to live alongside adults or a family with respectful children, aged 6+. He is mostly a quiet cat, saving up all his conversation for when he travels in his cat basket, which he doesn’t enjoy very much!

Tom, who was previously neutered, has received a dental and been brought up-to-date with vaccinations and received preventative flea and worm treatment. During his HFC health check, Tom was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism, a condition causing his thyroid to create too many hormones. To ensure he stays happy and feeling well, Tom will need to receive medication twice a day, served in gastro-intestinal food, potentially on a long term basis. He will also need to have regular vet check-ups to ensure he receives the minor adjustments needed to his medication levels. To support Tom’s ongoing health, HFC is willing to offer both advice and financial support to his adopter, with a 25% contribution towards the cost of his ongoing treatment for this condition.

Tom would like to find a home where he can be the only pet. This will both enable him to enjoy lots of attention and ensure his medication can be administered accurately.

Tom is feeling better and is now ready to meet potential adopters at his foster home in Cobham. If you would like to offer him a loving home that has safe, outside space, and you are able to be at home at regular times in the morning and evening to provide his food and medication, please help us to help Tom and apply to adopt him today. Thank you.

LUCY

This is Lucy, who is a cheeky, female, black kitten who is estimated to be 17 weeks’ old.

Lucy was found living stray by a member of the public who handed her into a vet practice for safety. A thorough health check revealed that she had not been microchipped and was suffering with a poorly stomach. Due to her illness, Lucy was cared for at the vet practice for a few weeks until she had gained some weight and it was safe to prepare her for re-homing.

We have taken Lucy into HFC foster care in Cranleigh, where she has been for four weeks. Whilst her stomach remains sensitive to some foods, which will mean she will need to follow a good quality diet, she is feeling much better. Lucy has become a happy and playful kitten who enjoys lots of play, particularly with dangly toys. She also likes to look out of her window and to spend time with her Carer. When life is just too exciting, she will entertain her Carer with a zoomie!

Lucy is a little nervous and can easily be spooked, therefore, she has potential to live with adults or a family with respectful children, aged 7+. However, she has had no experience with other cats or dogs whilst in our care.

In preparation for re-homing, Lucy has now been spayed, microchipped and fully vaccinated and she is ready to meet potential adopters at her foster home in Cranleigh. If you would like to offer this gorgeous kitten a forever home that has safe outside space, please complete our application form and we will be in touch. Thank you.

RAGDOLL FRIENDS, MICKEY & FREYA, SEEKING AN INDOOR HOME

We are still searching for a loving, indoor home for gorgeous, fluffy friends, Mickey & Freya. Here are some lovely new photos showing what they have been getting up to at their foster home in Epsom!

Mickey, who is male, 5 years’ old and a Flame Red Ragdoll, and his friend, Freya, who is female, 4 years’ old and a Chocolate Point Ragdoll, are looking for a forever home. They have come into HFC care because their owner has sadly become homeless and is no longer able to care for them. These beautiful, long-haired cats, who have lived indoors all their lives, would like an indoor home.

Mickey, (orange tipped ears) is a lovable rogue who likes to explore everything. He is quite talkative and, because he is deaf, will sometimes chat loudly. In contrast, Freya is very well behaved and acts like Mickey’s mother! She is very nervous and will likely hide upon arrival to a new home.

Mickey and Freya are very closely bonded, but they also love to play fight. Mickey is often the instigator, but Freya always forgives his antics and, within a short time, they mutually groom and cuddle up together! Neither Mickey nor Freya are lap cats but they love snuggling together on a heat pad next to their Carer and to lie next to them in bed at night.

Both cats love bootlace, ribbon and fishing rod type games and their cat puzzle feeder. They are fully litter trained and eat a variety of wet and a little dry food.

As long-haired cats, Mickey and Freya will need daily brushing to prevent matting. Whilst Mickey loves being brushed, Freya can sometimes be elusive at brush time!

Mickey has just received a dental, which has sadly left him with only his canine teeth. Both cats are neutered and they are up-to-date with vaccinations. As indoor cats, who will not have exposure to the outside world, it is recommended that they receive booster vaccinations at three yearly intervals.

Mickey and Freya, who are large and fluffy cats, are looking for a large indoor home where they will have choice about when to spend time together and apart. They play nicely and have potential to either live with adults or alongside a family with respectful children aged 8+ who understand Freya’s need for space and Mickey’s capacity for misbehaving! They would like to be the only pets in their new home.

Mickey and Freya are ready to meet potential adopters at their current foster home in Epsom. If you would like to offer a loving indoor home to this characterful pair, please don’t delay and complete our application form today! Thank you.

SUNNY

Sunny, who is ginger, male and four years’ old is looking for a forever home.

After his original owner moved to Dubai with his young family a year ago, Sunny was welcomed into the owner's mother’s home. Keen to not to lose touch with her family, Sunny’s new owner regularly travelled to Dubai to see them whilst Sunny stayed in a local cattery. Over time, Sunny no longer coped well with being separated from his owner or enjoyed trips to the cattery, appearing to become more withdrawn with every visit. He also struggled with the arrival of a new cat in his neighbourhood who bullied him. Therefore, Sunny’s owner reluctantly asked HFC for help to find him a more suitable home.

Sunny arrived into HFC foster care last week where he has been settling in well. He is a beautiful, large cat too big to sit on most laps, preferring to sit next to his Carer. He has a very, soft, cuddly coat and communicative, "waggy" tail, which he uses to ask his Carer when he would like a fuss and to let her know as soon as he’s had enough! Sunny loves to climb, once jumping onto the top of a door to get the best angle on his temporary home (see photo)! He likes to look out of the window and his catio and a home with a safe garden to explore is top of Sunny's wish list. So far, Sunny has not been playful, but this has potential to change once he is settled into a new home.

Sunny is looking for a home with adults whose travel away from home is limited and who have time to spend making him feel special. Due to his recent experience with cats and a fear of dogs he would like to be an only pet in his new home.

Sunny has previously been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. He has also received updates to preventative flea and worm treatment and is now ready to meet potential adopters at his foster home in Tilford (Farnham).

If you would like to help Sunny rediscover his previous Sunny disposition(!) and you are able to offer him a loving, forever home with safe, outside space, please apply to adopt him by completing our application form below. Thank you:

Last year we were there for over 309 cats. 201 of those came into our care. Many others received our support in other ways, whether they were neutered, microchipped or we simply gave their owners welfare advice, or help in another area, enabling them to keep their cats with them. We want cats coming in to be a last resort so really try to help cat caregivers to resolve their concerns.

We are proud to support our local community and love matching adopters with our cats. We are grateful to those who chose us and love that our matches were so purrfect that none came back into our care for the whole year!

We carefully balance capacity and resources ensuring we have a very low length of stay (LoS) for each cat. This means they move into their new homes without lengthy stays in catteries or temporary accommodation. It also means we can give each cat great care and our full attention.

So far this year we have already supported 51 cats so we are set for another busy one.

If you want to support our work please follow us, donate and sign up to our newsletters. We absolutely need to continue to be here for the cats of Surrey.

HERE FOR CATS CAT-CHUP

Although the weather shows no sign of improvement, our thoughts are turning to Spring and our plans for fundraising events. Dates to put in your diary so far:

May 3rd - RSPCA Funday at Millbrook in Chobham

June 28th - The Cranleigh Carnival on the common in Cranleigh

13th September - HFC Fundraiser, Caenwood Close in Weybridge

We hope you will come and support us. More details will follow closer to the time.

After a successful period of rehoming there has been a difficult period with very few applications and adoptions slowing right down. This is a worrying time as we have 26 cats currently available for adoption and a long list of cats needing our help. Fortunately, we have had some promising enquiries in the last few days.

Last year the average length of stay for a cat with HFC is 23 days. We are proud of how quickly we are rehoming cats when they enter our care, working hard to find the right match, and are delighted to say that no cats were returned to us in the last year. We always check how our cats are doing post adoption to ensure all is well and work together to resolve any issues. There will always be situations that delay adoptions, for example complex cases, plus young kittens will often need an 8 – 10 week turnaround time. A healthy, young cat with a full vet and owner history to help leads to a shorter assessment period. All cats are health-checked, microchipped and vaccinated, given worm and flea treatments and neutered. Dental treatment is also provided when required.

We have managed to find room for 3 cats who are all being fostered:

HOLLY & IVY were struggling to cope with the presence of a baby in the home. They are being rehomed separately. HOLLY is a lovely little tabby who already has a home lined up. IVY currently has more complex needs. He is showing signs of a previous leg injury not being fully resolved. He is currently on pain medication and we plan an x-ray when he visits the vet for his vaccination, combining the two as the vet is not his favourite idea of a fun day out!

BABY, a 6-year-old, black, long-haired male joined us this week and already has a potential adopter post dental.

It is always worth submitting an application to us so that if a suitable cat becomes available, we can match you up. This is a win/win situation as it saves us the time taken to advertise and the cat will spend less time in our care, which puts less stress on them and helps us to free up space.

News on cats in our care:

ASH has been doing great with our vet following his leg amputation. He has been recovering well, but his wounds needed re-stitching this week as he’s being a monkey with them and making it difficult to dress them. Once he’s better we have a home lined up for him with a lovely previous adopter who spotted him on our page and fell in love with him after reading about his situation.

Friendly black and white TUXIE (this is her in our photo) came to us as a stray. She had been living in a lady’s garage since before Christmas and efforts to find an owner were unsuccessful. She had no microchip and we had assumed that with estimated age of between 2 and 3 she was probably neutered. However, she has come into season so we arranged for her to see our vet to be spayed. We would have still covered the cost of the operation if we had already found her a new home but it’s good that it has happened while she is in our care.

9-year-old DON has recovered well from his Entropion operation and is now featuring on Facebook as one of our Valentine lads looking for love. His friendly personality is emerging, and he is now a firm favourite at the vet practice that has been caring for him!

Stray duo GARLIC and GINGER came in for neutering whilst they await space, to prevent them duplicating in the meantime. They’ve been hanging around for over a year in the Farnborough area, no microchips.

If you would like to support our work (like all other animal charities we are struggling with the demand for help and for funds to carry on) you can donate here:

RE-HOMED!

PRICILLA

Pricilla, who is a tortie Ragdoll cross, is female and 6 years’ old. She is ready to find her forever home and is also hoping to meet, and fall in love with, an adopter this Valentine’s weekend.

Pricilla, who is mum to Baby (reserved), sister to Harley and aunt to Banksy, is a new arrival to our cattery space on the Surrey/Hampshire border, where she has settled in very well. She is available for adoption after a relationship breakdown sadly led to her owner seeking help from HFC, concerned that her cats were no longer receiving the attention they deserved.

Pricilla is very placid, often wrapping herself around her owner’s shoulders or dangling parts of her body off the back of chairs! She had built a very strong bond with her previous owner and liked to spend time in the same room as her. However, she can sometimes be shy with visitors.

Pricilla has potential to either live with adults or alongside a family with respectful children, aged 5+. She is playful, both by herself and with others, with paper straws and pizza boxes being her toys of choice! With a slow and careful introduction, she has potential to live alongside a small, gentle dog. Pricilla likes to spend some time outside in her own garden and is, therefore, looking for a home with safe outside space.

Pricilla has previously been spayed. To prepare her for adoption, we have arranged for her to receive a health check, microchip, a dental (scale and polish) and a first vaccination.

If you are falling for placid Pricilla and would like to offer a happy home that has safe, outside space for her to enjoy once settled, please register your interest in her by completing the application form below. Thank you.

SINGLETONS, FRED AND DON, ARE LOOKING FOR LOVE!
(Fred Re-homed, Don Available)

On the approach to Valentine’s weekend, we would like to highlight two, gorgeous, single, male (mostly) black cats for whom we have not received any applications so far.

Fred, who is male, black (with a little white under his chin) and 8 years’ old, has come into HFC foster care because his owner became unwell and has, reluctantly, moved into permanent care. Understandably, Fred is missing his much-loved owner and this, added to his natural shyness, has resulted in him spending daylight hours hiding in a drawer under his Carer’s bed, coming out at night to eat, drink and use the litter tray.

Fred is slowly becoming more confident and we would love to find him a forever home with an adopter who will find pleasure in building on this progress before he becomes too settled in foster care. Here is a link to his full profile:

https://www.hereforcats.org/cats/fred

And 9-year-old Don came into HFC care because his owner, who had sadly suffered a bereavement, no longer felt able to care for him. At that time, Don was suffering with an Entropian, which is where the eye lid rolls inwards and causes the lashes to rub onto the surface of the eye. This was uncomfortable for him and had sadly led to him fighting a number of infections. Don’s eye has recovered well and his friendly personality is emerging. He is now a firm favourite at the vet practice that has been caring for him! Here is a link to his full profile:

https://www.hereforcats.org/cats/don

Both Fred and Don are looking for adult homes with safe outside space to enjoy once settled.

We would love to find potential matches for both Fred and Don and set up dates for them this Valentine’s weekend! If you are interested in adopting one of these beautiful, but overlooked, boys you can find out more about them in their full profiles in the Featured Cats bar on this page or via the individual links above. Thank you.
