Stepping Stones Canine rescue - About Us

With years of animal rescue and fostering experience between them, a group of friends recognized the need for a canine only rescue group in the Triad area. Consolidating their shared goal to help dogs of all breeds find the best possible home, while also matching adopters with their ideal companion, they joined forces to create a new rescue group. Stepping

Stones Canine Rescue is a charitable and educational non-profit corporation, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Our volunteers share an enthusiasm for dogs and support a mission to rescue, protect, provide sanctuary and ultimately find adoptive families for abandoned, stray and neglected dogs. All of our dogs are housed in foster homes where they are provided with an enormous amount of love and any medical attention needed to insure their best health before adoption. All dogs are evaluated for temperament and personality, helping us to place them in homes that are well suited to their needs and to the needs of their future family.

New girls in the house! Allow us to introduce Flower (1 year old) and Hannah (6 months old) German Wirehaired Pointer/English Pointer mixes who moved into foster care today.

These girls were in a home where things got a little out of hand when their mom started having litters. They are very sweet girls but haven't had much social experience outside of the home they grew up in. But you know we love to watch them bloom in foster care!

We will be working on vet care and spay appointments and then some social outings. And then we will hopefully be ready to introduce them to you in a few weeks! As foster space becomes available, we will also look to bring Hannah's two brothers into the program as well.

Stay tuned for their journey with us! We won't be accepting applications until they are vetted and ready to find new homes. But we will definitely post updates along the way!

Our little boys are making progress! Lloyd is finally starting to catch up to his brother developmentally. Which Harry LOVES because now they can really play and learn from their sibling interactions! They are both finally off meds and eating well. We are going to give them a few more weeks and then have a recheck with the vet to assess them to see if they can have vaccines.

Harry and Lloyd developed early onset Puppy Strangles at just 3 weeks of age, so it has been a stressful and emotional journey to get them to this point. Due to this being an autoimmune issue, their doctors wanted to wait until they are at least 12 weeks old to vaccinate them. (They are currently 9 weeks old.) Things feel like they are finally looking up, so we are cautiously optimistic. Stay tuned for more updates on them!

Storm was a single puppy rescued from a storm drain, so he doesn't have any siblings to play with. But that's ok, adopted siblings are great for that too! It's safe to say that Storm is going to be a cat friendly little guy 💓 We estimate him to be 5 - 6 weeks old now, so we anticipate that Storm will be ready to meet everyone at our next adoption event - stop by our booth at Howlin at the Moon's Doggie Fashion Show on Feb 8th! Stay tuned for updates and details!

Finny will round out our adoption crew tomorrow at Pet Supermarket in Thruway Shopping Center! Come on out to see us from 11:30 - 2. 412 S. Stratford Rd, WS 27103.

Meet Finn
BREED: Bulldog

AGE: 1 year old (approx DOB is 11/01/2022)

WEIGHT: 52 lbs

LIKES: Starbucks pup cups, other dogs, toys, going out to meet new people, trying to fit in his foster mom's lap like he's a small puppy

DISLIKES: Being ignored when he wants your attention

FAVORITE THINGS: Snacks, pets, squeaky toys, and bowling for humans

ENERGY LEVEL (High/Med/Low): Medium

CRATE TRAINED: Yes. Finn will go jump in his crate for snacks

HOUSE BROKEN: Work in progress. Sometimes Finn gets to playing so hard in the house that he forgets to go to the door and will have a piddle accident. He usually goes to the door though, and he always poos outside.

MEDICAL ISSUES: Yes. Finn was born with two congenital birth defects. He was found in a local park as a very skinny stray and has really blossomed in foster care. But he will need a new owner who understands the potential care he will need in the future. Finn was born with a dermoid cyst covering the entire iris of his right eye. During his time with the rescue, he had a very expensive surgery to correct this. After months of follow up care, he finally had a sight reaction at a check up, indicating that they actually gave him sight in his right eye! We aren't sure exactly what he sees, it may just be shadows. But no further care is needed on his eye. Finn's second issue was that he was born as ectrodactyly in his front right leg. This is also referred to as 'lobster claw"; and can occur in humans as well. We have consulted with a number of vets, including two specialists, and it's likely that Finn will need an amputation at some point in his life as the leg breaks down. We are happy to discuss this more with any potential adopter. But we would hope that anyone who would like to adopt Finn would go google this condition to understand it. Right now, Finn gets around on his leg pretty well and is an exuberant puppy who doesn't let it stop him.

Finn has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and is on a monthly heartworm and flea medication.

If you are interested in giving Finn the loving home he deserves, please fill out an application at the link below to get the ball rolling on a meet and greet.

Our shy girl Gidget is going to attend her first adoption event tomorrow! It will definitely test her comfort levels in a social setting, so please send good thoughts her way! Info below on Gidget. We know the right person or family is out there for her!

DOB: approx 4/1/24

Weight: 25 lbs

Likes: Playing, toys, other dogs, cuddles with foster mom!

Energy Level: Puppy! Gidget is approx 9 months old at the time of this posting, and she has the typical energy of a puppy that age. She loves to run and play with her foster siblings.

Housebroken: As long as you are taking her out consistently, Gidget is great! She is crate trained where she sleeps at night.

Medical notes: Gidget has been seen by our vets and has received a clean bill of health! She has had all of her vaccines, has been spayed and microchipped, and is on a monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention.

Foster Notes:

Gidget's ideal home: Will have a fully fenced yard for her to run and play in safely, at least one other dog in the home who is friendly and outgoing so that she can take cues from them, and people who are patient and understand that sometimes you need to let a dog warm up to you without pushing them too much. Because she can still be a little nervous with people as she is getting to know them, an adult-only home is a better match for her than a home with kids.

If you are interested in giving Gidget the permanent, loving home that she deserves, please fill out an application at the link below to get the ball rolling on a meet and greet.

Breed: Domestic Short Hair Orange Tabby

DOB: approx 9/01/2024

Both Pumpkin and Spice have beautiful green eyes. Spice is a purr machine and the bigger kitten. Pumpkin is the smaller of the two, but he's definitely the boss! They love playing in the cat tunnel and climbing their cat tree. The boys live with and get along great with other cats, dogs and the resident Roomba! They are typical kittens and love to play, explore, and be around their people. They are litterbox trained.

Medical notes: Pumpkin and Spice have been seen by our vets and have received a clean bill of health! They have had their first kitten vaccines, and their neuters and microchips are included in their adoption fee of $125 each.

DOB: 08/01/2024 (approx 6 months old)

Likes: Digging, chewing, snuggles, loves being outside

Dislikes: loud noises like vacuum cleaners, people being to pushy, being approached to fast

Delilah is a super sweet girl, a bit shy at first but warms up quickly, she doesn’t bark a lot and isn’t overly high energy but in her down time she loves mental stimulation and chewing and needs appropriate things to chew on. Like most puppies, she will steal and chew your favorite socks and shoes!

It's time! Meet Navi this Saturday from 11:30 - 2 at our adoption event at Pet Supermarket in Thruway Shopping Center! Details below on Navin and how to submit an application for him.

DOB: approx 2 years old

Weight: 13 lbs

Likes: treats, squeaky toys, playing with his canine foster brothers, following his human around

Energy Level: medium/high; while he does settle down for couch naps and sleeps well through the night in his crate, Navin likes to jump up to greet people, play with toys, and chase his foster brothers around.

Housebroken: Navin is crate trained and transitioned to being an indoor dog well. His new owner should expect to continue to provide him guidance with housebreaking.

Medical notes: Navin has been seen by our vets and has received a clean bill of health! He has had all of his vaccines, has been neutered and microchipped, and is on a monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention.

Foster Notes: Navin was surrendered when his current owner realized she could not care for him properly. He had lived most of his live outside, without any grooming of his coat. Since coming into foster care, Novi has transitioned to being an indoor dog. He is crate trained for when his foster mom is away and for night time sleeping.

Navin does well with his two small foster dog brothers. He is very mouthy when playing (nips) so this needs to be considered when introducing him to other dogs. He picks up on cues well and shows signs of submission to other dogs if they tire of playing. He was exposed to a cat in foster care and tried to chase her. They had limited interaction overall but a home with a cat could be considered so long as the cat is tolerant.

Prior to coming into foster care, Navin had not experienced regular grooming. He will need a new owner (and a great groomer!) to continue to work on his ability to be groomed, which could include medicating him for grooming sessions or grooming in multiple sessions. At this stage, Navin needs to be medicated and muzzled for grooming. He has warmed up to letting his foster mom brush him gently and wipe his eyes/face.

Navin did not grow up socialized with young children, therefore if children are in the home they should be over 13 years old with prior dog experience.

If you are interested in giving Navin the permanent, loving home that he deserves, please fill out an application at the link below and come meet Novi at our next adoption fair Saturday, January 18th from 11:30-2 at Pet Supermarket located at 412 S. Stratford Rd.

It's time! Meet Novi this Saturday from 11:30 - 2 at our adoption event at Pet Supermarket in Thruway Shopping Center! Details below on Novi and how to submit an application for him.

Breed: Poodle/Yorkie Mix

DOB: approx 3 years old

Weight: 13 lbs

Likes: squeaky toys, snuggles with his foster mom, walks around the neighborhood

Energy Level: Medium, daily walks meet Novi's exercise needs

Housebroken: Novi is crate trained and transitioned to being an indoor dog well. His new owner should expect to continue to provide him guidance with housebreaking.

Medical notes: Novi has been seen by our vets and has received a clean bill of health! He has had all of his vaccines, has been neutered and microchipped, and is on a monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention.

Foster Notes: Novi was surrendered when his current owner realized she could not care for him properly. He had lived most of his live outside, without any grooming of his coat. Since coming into foster care, Novi has transitioned to being an indoor dog. He is crate trained for when his foster mom is away and for night time sleeping. He loves to be the center of attention and would do best as the only dog in the home. We also do not think Novi would do well with cats.

Prior to coming into foster care, Novi had not experienced regular grooming. He was sedated for his initial grooming because the process causes him anxiety. He will need a new owner (and a great groomer!) to continue to work on his ability to be groomed, which could include medicating him for grooming sessions or grooming in multiple sessions. At this stage, Novi needs to be medicated and muzzled for grooming.

Novi did not grow up socialized with young children, therefore if children are in the home they should be over 13 years old with prior dog experience.
