► ► Things to do when a Pet is FOUND ◄ ◄
★If someone claims to be the Pet's owner, please ask for identification & Proof of Ownership before returning the Pet. (Vet Records, Photos of Claimer with the Found Pet, License, Description of unique markings or personality traits, etc...)★

★Call Lethbridge Animal Shelter: 403-320-4099 - and also Call Lethbridge Humane Society: 403-320-8991 -& let both places know all about the Pet that you found. (the Pet's owner might have contacted them, and then they can match you up. :) The Shelter has an after-hours answering service, the Humane Society has an answering machine)

★If you are able to approach the Pet, check for identification:
-Personalized ID tags on the Pet's collar:
-City of Lethbridge Dog License number
-Rabies tag (will identify the Dog or Cat’s veterinary clinic)
-Tattoo (usually in the right ear or on the flank)

★Take Pet to Vet Clinic for a Microchip Scan & Tattoo Check (FREE to do, just Call ahead).

★If you are unable to catch a Dog on the loose, contact the Lethbridge Shelter ASAP at: 403-320-4099 & they can send an officer to the area.

★Share your Pet Sighting ASAP on Local Facebook Groups★

► ►Things to do when your Pet is LOST ◄ ◄
★Look around your neighbourhood right away! Ask neighbours, mail carrier, delivery people, etc... if they have seen your Pet. Ask them to keep their eyes open – give them a picture of your Pet. Talk to people who regularly walk in your neighbourhood.

★Search back allies & yards of your neighbours (with Permission). (Sheds/Garages/etc)
Shake a treat can if your Pet is familiar with that sound. USE A FLASHLIGHT. Check the area thoroughly - Pet may be hiding nearby - or may have gotten stuck somewhere...Shed/Garage/under a Deck/etc..., or someone may have taken your Pet in.

★Check homes under construction/unoccupied homes.

★Leave food & water outside in several areas of the yard to encourage the Pet to return. (if it’s winter, purchase a plug-in water bowl & make a shelter). If you share your area with skunks, it is best to elevate the food.

★Leave out "familiar" scented items (pet beds/toys/blanket/your worn clothing), so that the Pet will recognize where their home is (Snow can disorient a Pet). Hang items on your fence, clothesline, on a tree.

**If there are Coyotes in your area, do NOT leave out a litter box**

★If applicable, use your doggy in the search as they have a keen sense of smell.

★If possible, and safe to do so, leave a window/door open for Pet to return through - the way that Pet escaped if possible - Pet may try to return when you are asleep or away/etc...

★If safe to do so, for Lost Cats, check the area late at night/early in the morning - bring some treats to shake & a flashlight. (if Pet is stuck somewhere, it will be more quiet out, so you can hopefully hear Pet easier. The flashlight can help with reflecting off his/her eyes)

★Keep an eye on our Lost & Found Pets Photo Album, in case a Found Pet might match:
https://www.facebook.com/pg/LethbridgeAndAreaLostAndFoundPets/photos/?tab=album&album_id=323880490964026

★Even if the distance is far away, if a Pet is spotted or found that looks like your Lost Pet, make sure to check! (Cats can be transported a far distance accidentally by crawling inside a car engine, or on purpose by someone, etc...)

★Call Lethbridge Animal Shelter: 403-320-4099
(they have an answering service after hours)/
EMAIL: [email protected]
Check there IN PERSON, every 2 or 3 days at: 2405 – 41 Street North, Lethbridge. NOTE: If your Pet is at the Shelter, be prepared to pay a Fee when you pick up your Pet. (If you have a Dog, they will make sure that you have a license. Licenses for spayed/neutered Dogs are less. NOKA is helpful for low income families who are looking to spay/neuter their Cats/Dogs/Bunnies: Call/Text: 327-6652 , Email: [email protected] )

★★More suggestions, mentioned by Elisa Dortman, is to call a bunch of Taxi services as most of them were more than willing to let their drivers know to keep an eye out for her lost dog, HONDO. Plus, she also contacted two radio stations, (one put the information on their page & another aired it)
After days of doing everything they could think of, Elisa ended up finding her doggy by dropping a pair of their socks off at the door of the store he was last seen at, & they think he maybe caught a scent and he was there within minutes! :)★★

★★Suggestion by Shirley Badura:
"When my dog went missing a long time ago, I called the grader operators. Actually stopped them on the road & asked them to watch. Gave them a paper with my number on it. They drive slow down all those country roads & probably see a lot. Also, maybe contact the Hutterites in the area, they have a lot of people. A lot of Dogs end up there or they spot them lots. Tell them to spread the word & leave contact number, maybe a little reward." ★

★★Suggestion from Breanne: "Check the surrounding reservations.....Cardston, Brocket, etc... My friend had a large beautiful dog and he was taken out there 2 times!! Found him running with a pack of unwanted dogs." ★★

★Information from Tanja Murrer on Feb.14/2012:
"There are always Cats from the Lethbridge, Coaldale area dropped off at the Claresholm shelter. Please, always check for missing ones at the Claresholm shelter, they do have a website, thanks!"

► ►HOW TO REPORT ANIMAL ABUSE IN OUR COMMUNITY ◄ ◄
The ALBERTA SPCA are the only ones that have the authority to seize abused animals from their owners. They will investigate any report of animal abuse called in. As long as the proper steps are taken to report these happenings, the SPCA can start an investigation immediately after a complaint is made. Sadly, there IS NOT an SPCA office here in Lethbridge. However, they will send a Peace Officer in to investigate any claims in the area.

*TO REPORT ANIMALS IN DISTRESS OUTSIDE OF EDMONTON OR CALGARY, PLEASE CALL 1-800-455-9003

PET SAFETY - Foxtail Plants!! - FOXTAILS: Why They're Dangerous - Posted by Pets.WebMD: "Foxtail plants can be risky for your Dog. The barbed seed heads of the foxtail plant can work their way into any part of your Dog or Cat, 🐶🐱 from the nose to between the toes and inside the ears, eyes, and mouth. They can even simply dig themselves directly into a patch of skin.
The foxtail plant is a grass-like w**d.
The danger of foxtails goes beyond simple irritation.
Because these tough seeds don't break down inside the body, an embedded foxtail can lead to serious infection for your Dog.
It can even lead to death if left untreated. The seeds can be hard to find in your Dog's fur.

So how can you tell if your pooch has a foxtail that’s causing problems? If you find a foxtail should you extract it? And when is it time to call a vet?

**Foxtails and Your Dog: Risks and Symptoms**
Foxtails travel. Moving relentlessly forward, never back, they can migrate from inside your Dog's nose to its brain. They can dig through skin or be inhaled into -- and then perforate -- a lung.
Embedded foxtails can cause discharge, abscesses, swelling, pain, and death.
If your dog is displaying any of the following symptoms, check for foxtails or talk to your vet:
*Feet. Foxtails love your Dog's feet and can easily become embedded between tender toes. Check for foxtails if you notice swelling or limping, or if your Dog is constantly licking the area.

*Ears. If your pooch is shaking their head, tilting it to the side, or scratching incessantly at an ear, this could be the sign of a foxtail -- one that may be so deep inside the ear canal you can't see it.
Your veterinarian needs to take a look using a special scope.

*Eyes. Redness, discharge, swelling, squinting, and pawing all may be signs your Dog has a foxtail lodged in its eye. If you think this may be the case, seek veterinary care immediately.

*Nose. If you see discharge from the nose, or if your Dog is sneezing frequently and intensely, there may be a foxtail lodged in a nasal passage.

*Ge****ls. Foxtails can find their way into these areas, too. So if you notice your Dog persistently licking at its ge****ls, foxtails could be the cause.

**Tips for Preventing Foxtail Problems**
Any Dog can get foxtails in the ears, nose, eyes, or mouth. But Dogs with long ears and curly hair can be especially prone to foxtail problems.

Prevent issues by:
Examining your pet's coat during foxtail season -- generally May through December -- especially if you've gone walking in open fields.
--Brush your Dog as necessary, looking especially closely for pointy foxtail awns in your Dog's thick or feathery fur.
--Check your pup's face and ears carefully for foxtails.
--Don't forget to look in and around your pooch's mouth and gums.
--Carefully check your Dog's paw pads for foxtails -- especially between the toes.

Use tweezers to remove any foxtails you can easily get to. But if a foxtail is deeply embedded, or if the area around it is red or swollen, call your veterinarian right away!!
Remember, foxtails won't come out on their own, and they can burrow into the brain, spine, eardrums, lungs -- actually, anywhere.

The easiest way to prevent foxtail problems is to keep your Dog out of overgrown, grassy areas.
You should also pull out any foxtail plants you find in your yard.

Also consider trimming your Dog's hair during foxtail season, especially if it tends to persistently get foxtails in one spot."

Pet Safety ❤ - Posted by Kelly Simpson on March 8/2024: "9 years ago, our beloved Dog fell through ice and drowned. 😢 💔
It happened in a flash. She was walking on an ice covered creek, found a bit of open water to drink from, and I was too far away, and I had a terrible feeling of danger, and then she was gone. 💔 We saw it happen. 😥 Every year, I think I won't bother reminding folks as it is tough for me, but then I do it, because if just one doglet is saved, it is worth the sadness of reliving that terrible day. PLEASE keep your Pets away as the danger is very real. Keep them safe." ❤
--
>Comment from Karrie-Anne Russell on March 8/2024:
"It can happen so quickly!! Very heartbreaking how often it does happen. My friend about 6-7 years ago, was walking her dog near the canal after Easter time. The dog slipped and couldn't get back out of the water. She jumped in to try and save the dog, she ended up in hospital in a coma and didn't make it. Very sad, and the pup didn't make it either." 😢
----
"Please do your part to keep you and your Pets safe, practice ice safety by keeping Pets away from all bodies of water and ice. The thickness of the ice can be deceiving and there are weak areas that can give way at any moment.
Keep your Dog on a leash around water, especially during fall and spring freeze-thaw cycles (typically between November to December and March to April).
It is never safe to walk on the ice on the river, no matter the season. The thickness of the ice can be deceiving.
If a dog or a person falls in the water, call 911 immediately. This includes the river, a stormwater pond, drainage outfall, or other water body. Keep an eye on the individual or pet, but do not attempt to rescue them yourself."
