We are not one to name & shame, however,
Please do NOT take your pets, specifically your rabbits to Somersby Vets.
Yesterday, my bunny Evie was not interested in food which is unlike her because she’s an absolute pig when it comes to food lol, so I called our usual vets PetStockVET at West Gosford (They are amazing with bunnies) but they were fully booked until Thursday.
The vet we always go to is already very bunny savvy and we have never had an issue before. The receptionist recommended Somersby Vets and specifically said they were experts in rabbits so I made an appointment and everything seemed okay by then.
So we go there and this is a vet I’ve never been to or heard of.
They took her temperature and said she was extremely cold, her bloods were high and then asked if they could take an X-ray. This is when things started to not make sense and my gut instinct was going crazy.. the vet seemed confident in everything they were saying but I wasn’t buying it. So the X-rays showed she had gas. That was it. The vet told me it was a gas obstruction and that she needed a $2,000+ surgery immediately or she will die a slow painful death if I don’t do that.

I was distraught. I decided to listen to my gut and I said no I’m going to take her home and monitor her myself. They tried to talk me out of it and I was adamant that that was not happening.
On our way home I called several vets for a second opinion and everything was also booked out or no exotic specialists were on. The last vet I rang was SASH in North Ryde and they were amazing.
We got into SASH and they were so caring and welcoming. They took her in and warmed her up and examined her. We waited about 30 minutes as there were people in front of us and then we get called in. The first thing the vet said to me was ”yeah looking at her X-rays I have no idea why they would say there’s an obstruction because there’s not”. And the relief I felt when she said that was unexplainable. Evie ended up having the beginning of Stasis which is very common in rabbits. No obstruction whatsoever.
They did want her to stay in overnight to observe her and give her fluids which was fine by me. The vet messaged me this morning saying she’s doing amazing and she’s eating again and looking well. So I’ll be picking her up this afternoon.
I just wanted to share this as a reminder to always trust your gut and to get a second opinion when something doesn’t sound right.
Rabbits are very delicate animals and people seem to take advantage of that when they can.
