Billy Walks is a dog walking and pet sitting service based in South Manchester, roughly covering Hulme, Whalley Range, Chorlton, Didsbury. Having spent much of my life around animals, mainly dogs (and horses in my younger years), the opportunity arose a few years ago to swap by office job for a career in dog walking and pet sitting. This really was, and still is, a dream come true! That “Monday fe

eling”? I’ve never had it as a dog walker, as Mondays mean the start of a new week of going out and having fun with my four-legged friends! The name of the service came about when a client commented that their dog “always looked forward to his Billy Walks”. Billy Walks are fun and varied; would you like to walk the same route and do the same thing every day? Although time and distance wise we are limited to walk locations in the South Manchester area, dogs are walked as much as possible in different locations, be it Turn Moss, Chorlton meadows or Chorlton Water Park. And within that area there are lots of different routes to take as well. I’ve been walking dogs in the area for almost 12 years now and I still discover new little paths! Having a background in agility and obedience training, I use my skills to bring something extra to the walks as well, by using fallen trees and park benches as agility equipment and places where yummy treats hide. This kind of “training” is not about imposing a strict regime with a goal to drill your dog into becoming an agility or obedience star; it’s all about having fun! Most dogs love trying new things and figuring out what they have to do to get a treat, and besides physical exercise they’ll also exercise their brains during their walk. Of course there are dogs who are not interested and just want a quiet mooch, and that is fine too. And for some dogs a walk isn’t a walk if it doesn’t include chasing a ball, so balls and other toys come out on most walks, although I do try and get them interested in other activities too. Billy Walks is now fully booked, but an announcement will be made on this page if any spaces become available - so please keep checking if you’re interested!

It was Boston Mania on Stretford Meadows!! 😄 Boomer, Betty and Elsie together turn a walk into a riot, in the best possible way! Those three together really are a laugh a minute! Bruce does try and get involved, bless him, but his little legs just can't keep up. With those ears tho, one day he'll really fly away! 😄

Fun and games with the afternoon crew usually revolves around a ball or something else that can be carried, hidden, thrown about and nabbed - they're always up for a good time!

It was all fun and games again, as the little crew met up with both old and new friends, while the afternoon crew went to Stretford Meadows for a spot of blackberry picking! Rufus is a very accomplished "pick your own" blackberry picker and Marnie is learning fast! 😄🐾🐾🐕❤️

Yay! Stan is back from his holiday! Marnie let him know that the situation with his ballie hasn't changed: she still nabs it whenever she can! 😄
The little crew had a walk along the river as well, as in: Sherman, Neko and Lyra walked, with Lyra having an occasional splash, while Jenny just swam along for most of the walk! Jenny swims for the sake of swimming - and preferably against the flow too! Never known a dog like her! 🌊🐾🐾🐕😃❤️

After all the rain, I think it's safe to say that we do now have a proper summer! Doesn't mean that the majority of the crew get soaked on their walks though! 😂
Lyra, too, has turned into a proper swimmer. She's taken her time but she's got there! If I'm not quick enough to throw her "ballie" in the water, she'll nudge it down the bank herself and jumps after it - she cracks me up! 🤣❤

Just a quick word about walking in these temperatures: we are extremely lucky to have so many wonderful spaces where there is safe, ready access to water for everyone to cool down and lots of shade. Ball games are in and around the water and the crew is encouraged to take things a bit more slowly and spend time in the shade, with lots of "find the treats" games in the grass. Water to drink is always on hand, but as it's "only" clean, fresh water it often gets looked at with disappointment. I'm considering putting some soil in the bottles to "improve the flavour"! 😄 The Billy Walks crew van has got air conditioning and it's usually much cooler inside than outside. You can be safe in the knowledge that, despite the sun and warmer weather, the Billy Walks crew don't lose their cool! 😎❤

The crew knows how to stay cool on a hot day: by having a good sniff, mostly in the shade, and a dip/paddle or swim in the river. BREAKING NEWS: Sherman went for a very long leisurely dip, up to his belly, and Marnie swam in full view of the rest of the crew! 😄😎🏊‍♂️🐾🐾🐕❤️❤️

Fun in the sun continues, as the little gang enjoyed a trip to Sale Ees and the river. Lyra has taken her time but is now a proper swimmer too. Although no one can beat Jenny, who just hops in the river and swims alongside us while we walk, against the flow, just for the fun of it! She wants me to throw little stones in the water (she loves the splash it makes) and if I don't "deliver", she comes out of the water to shout at me! She's hilarious! 😂
Boomer joined the afternoon gang. He's more than up for a ball game and he let Marnie know that he wanted to do zoomies with her. You don't have to ask Marnie twice! Lots of fun was had by the best crew in the world! 😁🐾🐾🐕❤

The Boston Trio (how's that for the name of a band!? 😄) was on the go again, jostling and squabbling their way through their walk. They're hilarious! Jenny, Sherman and Bruce looked on bemused: no idea what all the noise was about! 😄
The afternoon crew headed to Stretford Meadows, where Stan dropped his ball for a big stick - he thought that was way more exciting. Marnie showed that really nothing stands in her way if she wants to go somewhere and jumped right over Stan! 😂😂
This crew is just hilarious!! 🤣❤

ONLINE DOG PARKOUR BEGINNERS COURSE NOW AVAILABLE!!

If you're a regular follower of the Billy Walks crew's adventures, you'll have noticed that we regularly do "Dog Parkour". Dog Parkour isn't like the human version; we don't jump from tree to tree or do summersaults down river banks! It's a fun (and safe!) activity that any dog, regardless of age or size, can take part in.

Most dogs will do parkour "behaviours", as they're called, already. Standing with 2 feet on a higher obstacle, or jumping with all 4 feet onto something, ducking underneath an overhanging branch - these are all Parkour behaviours.

In Dog Parkour, the behaviours are carried out in a controlled, safe, way, on cue and on different obstacles. And it's not just about dogs learning how to do these things on cue, and what those cues are, but you, on the other end of the lead! - will learn how to teach them, as well as become very creative about finding suitable obstacles! 😄

So what can you do with the knowledge and skills you'll learn? First and foremost: have fun with your dog! 😃 For whatever reason, dogs can't always be running around off lead. I see many a dog owner shuffling down the street, obviously bored while holding a lead, with the dog at the end of it looking equally as miserable. Once you have learned about Parkour, you will be looking around for obstacles everywhere to practise the skills you've learned with your dog (remember to take treats, to reward them!) 😃

Sometimes, dogs may find their environment, or dogs coming into their personal space etc, quite challenging. Distracting your dog by asking them to to put 2 feet on a tree stump, for example, followed by enthusiastic praise and a treat, will make them feel a lot better about the situation they find themselves in, than if they had been told to 'sit' (and watch the other dog approach, for instance).

I could go on and on about the benefits and the fun of Parkour, but you get the picture: I absolutely love it - and so does Roxie, my own dog. She does find the outside world challenging at times, but doing Parkour has really increased her confidence (another benefit!)

Please see below how you can sign up for the online course:

What to do on a quiet day, when you can fit all crew members comfortably into one group, rather than having 2 groups for an hour's walk each? You take one crew out for 2 hours! We had a brilliant time, going off grid, paddling and swimming, finding treasures and losing them again, and some even had enough energy left in the tank for a round or two of zoomies at the end! 😄 Best crew in the world!! 😄🐾🐾🐕💕💕

Poor Boomer had to take some time off due to an injury. He's all healed up and back with a spring in his step, meaning lots of zoomies with Lyra! Sherman joined in as well, but Jenny opted for a swim. The sun was out so that meant that it was time to hit the water! 🌊😄
The afternoon crew was less lucky with the weather, but the appearance of the Kong stick made everything better - it really is the most popular toy ever! Lots of fun with the Best Crew in the World! 😁🐾🐾❤️❤️

The crew's been having a lovely time! Cut and dried grass is just heaven to roll in (apparently, not tried it myself!), and the little crew thoroughly enjoyed a walk around Turn Moss. The Kong stick came out too, which is a firm favourite with the Boston Sisters, Betty and Elsie - hours of of fun is had with it! 😃
Grass, plants and undergrowth has just exploded, due to the warm and very wet weather! As much as we like going off grid, some of the little tracks have become impassable, and even Rufus lost us at one point because he couldn't see us through the 6 foot tall grass! It feels like being in an Indiana Jones film sometimes! Holy grails haven't been found, although Stan found a busted football and was very pleased with himself - maybe that counts? 😄❤💕❤💕

03/07/2024

As you know, there's a "little" Billy Walks crew and the "afternoon crew", with bigger dogs and a usually a bit livelier walk. Some of the little crew find a walk, when there are big paws running past, a bit intimidating. That's not nice for them, so I try to keep the earlier walk a bit quieter.
Jenny and Sherman, a.k.a. "the little ones" are the smallest of the little crew, but they can stand their ground and aren't afraid to tell anyone, regardless of their size, to "go away!" when they interfere with their walk. So, on a quiet day, the little ones joined the afternoon crew - and this happened! The Labs were very respectful and Marnie did her own thing, till Sherman got giddy! "Could he? Was he? Would he?" Stan and Rufus weren't sure at first, but then they were like "Yayyy, zoomie time!!!" with Sherman right in the middle of it all! 😃😂 Stan especially was smitten and really did his best to keep himself low to the ground at Sherman's level - who then "beat him up" (i.e. lots of paws and teeth but none of it intended to hurt the other one)! 🤣 Stan didn't mind at all - at the end of the walk, they were both lying down beside each other, with Stan obviously over the moon with his new friend! 😍😁
To be repeated! 😁😄💕

The little crew really enjoyed themselves: frequent stops in the shade and water at hand, either bottled or a whole river of it, for those who wanted a paddle or a swim. And there were dust baths - especially for Sherman and Jenny! 😄😎❤💕

Oh we do love the sunshine! ☀️😎 To avoid overheating, we stay in the shade as much as possible and do games like finding treats in the tall grass. Although the grass itself appears to be very tasty as it is! Those who want to swim or paddle can have a dip in the river or the lake at Sale Water Park, and there's always a refreshing drink at hand.
The Billy Walks crew does summer 2024 like pros! 😎🐾🐾🐕❤️

As the 'fun in the sun' continues, the little crew went "mountaineering" at Sale Ees. It was a tough and treacherous trek, but they made it to the top! We'll bring a flag next time! 😄
Jenny did her trademark swim against the flow: yes, that is a very little dog in the middle of a big river! She absolutely loves powering against the flow though and is very confident and accomplished (for anyone worrying: I do supervise her closely!) 😁😍
The Labs, Rufus and Stan, love a good bellyflop into the river; it never fails to make me laugh! Marnie can swim and isn't scared of water; most of the time though, she'll have a quick, quiet bath before the excited boys jump in and that's her done! 😄
Stan, always up for a game and keen to get possession of whatever is on offer - including dried grass! - tried a game of catch. In the end he was a bit disappointed that grass really was all it was and left me to it 😄 Happy days! 😄😎❤

Not a drop of rain and the crew still got wet - but from swimming and paddling this time!
Newest crew member Boomer likes to keep getting wet to a minimum and waited patiently for Lyra to get the ball out of the water for him. Lyra had no plans to give it up though! 😄 They really hit it off yesterday, friends for life!
Rufus' search for treasures wasn't very successful: only one battered dog toy. Betty said: "That's for me, thank you!" and took it off him - only for Elsie to tell her that it was hers! The Boston sisters crack me up! 😄 In the end no one wanted it anyway: the Kong stick was far more interesting, and Betty tried hard to drag a huge, real stick out of the lake at Sale Water Park. She's nothing if not ambitious!
All in all, another lovely day with the best crew in the world! 😁💕💕

What a day we had! The little crew went off grid, exploring. The undergrowth has become so dense though, that I didn't realise where we were heading and I got us lost! (Note: the crew wasn't lost; they had no idea where we were meant to be heading, they just had a great time! 😄)
The afternoon crew was joined by Boomer. He'd not been able to join us for a few weeks and I think they'd forgotten about his confident and cheeky ways - ball possession was not at all guaranteed while he was about! 😄 Boomer may be half the size of Rufus and Stan, but he can more than hold his own!
The tall grass at the end got everyone really giddy and lots of zoomies were done 😄❤ !

We had a ball! Well, some of us did - everyone else just really enjoyed themselves 😄💕
