Tahoe‘s first day holding one for me to docter. Had a calf with an abscess that needed treated. We were able to get him roped and Tahoe held him for me while I was able to drain the abscess and flush it out with iodine. As a three year-old Tahoe is quickly proving that he will be one of my go to’s for ranch work.

This past weekend, I got to take our young horses, Tahoe (turned 3 in April)and Windsong (will turn 3 in July) to their first branding. I was super happy with how they did!All the groundwork and training paid off, it helped that they each got to drag the calf sled through caving season a couple of times earlier this spring.

I’m really enjoying getting to work with Clementines 2yr old filly “Wind Song” (3yr in July). Clementine gave me permission to ride her while she is gone working at the greenhouse in Mandan this spring. I got good start with her on neck reining and a whoa, she still struggling with the correct lead on the big circle but I’m sure we will get that ironed out with time. I used her to sort pairs this week, she’s to the level were it’s a lot of fun to do a job on her now. Hopefully we will get to drag a few to the irons this spring

Smokey is one of my favorites for sorting that cow that wants to get past us. I took a chance not saddling him though!

Smokey is a gray gelding, foaled May 10th, 2016. He will be nine years old this May. 15 1/4 hands.

Smokey’s training started when David imprinted him as a c**t.

One of David Dagley's main go-to horses, Smokey has sorted cattle for weeks at a time during A.I. season, been roped off of at brandings and when doctoring calves in pasture, been used during calving season and for all kinds of other ranch work, and has been used at the sales barn to help move livestock around.

Smokey has experience swimming, pulling sleds and skis, and has been introduced to play days.

We've taken him trail riding in the Badlands of North Dakota too.

He stands for a farrier, although David mostly does his own trimming.

Cowdogs and the Dagley Family

Hangin Tree Cowdogs play an important role in the Dagley’s ranch life.

David and Susanna Dagley manage a ranch in South Dakota, USA, where they also homeschool their three children, raise goats, sheep, and chickens, train their dogs to help them move the cattle and goats, and seek to honor God with their lives.

As a working ranch they use rotational grazing to improve the soil. The cattle are in an area for a week or two, then they use the dogs to move them to fresh pasture, allowing the land to rest most of the year. This improves the soil and encourages the growth of native grasses.
