Why yes I am 😂 There are a good few dots about but there are a lot of horses to go round as well! Everyone has to start somewhere but there is no excuse for the people that have no intention of becoming qualified and registered.

** Answer **

The pony lives in Southport, the area is sandy and she is on short grass. The two are a very potent combination. No muzzle.

The owner is on weight watch and even puts hay out in the field to help stop her going for the grass. It’s a really tricky time of year because it’s for the good of the animal that they’re out but if they aren’t in heavy work, you’re up against it with the weight gain. As long as you keep an eye on the teeth and limit the time out, it’s not often it gets this far along.

Many people are anti muzzle but surely, if carefully monitored, it’s better than laminitis. Again, just moderation. I know it’s easier said than done but what more can you expect with horses 🤷🏽‍♂️😂

Cribbing and wind sucking can cause similar wear but often include more of the incisors. What can occur in severe cases, is that the nerves can’t retreat as fast as the teeth are wearing and become exposed, leading to a dead nerve and tooth root (apical) infection.

Horses do have a special feature whereby if a tooth suffers from some form of insult/trauma, it can lay down tertiary dentin, which forms a bridge/caps the nerve and keeps it safe. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t.

What I look for when I see wear like the pictures on the post are small black holes on the surface of the tooth, above where the nerve lies. If I see any, I probe to check the depth and depending on what I see, I either monitor or refer for x rays. I have put some blue circles around where the holes would normally appear.

If you’re lucky, it can be a case of a vet drilling out the decayed material, to clean and backfilling the hole, thus sealing the tooth off from anything getting in. Not so lucky, it would be tooth removal.

Here we have something that crops up a lot, especially this time of year. Who knows what is going on here, what specifically might have caused it and for those really in the know, what can possibly occur if it gets worse.

A few things can make this sort of thing happen but there is something in particular that makes it like this! 8 year old Cob.

Answer will be posted tomorrow evening 😁

It’s one thing having workwear but can’t not have something to go out in! 👌🐴🦷
