We rescue the "leftovers" from animal control, the dogs nobody wants because they're older or suffer from neglect, abuse or have a medical need. Their "last" day becomes the first day of their new life. We provide the veterinary care they need, a foster family they love and when they're ready, we adopt them to a family who cherishes them. We are all volunteers so your tax-deductible donation goes

Save the Leftovers: Tossed Out Noel

Trigger Warning: This post is upsetting. We do not have any information on what happened after the Good Samaritan saved Noel from the children. Her focus was to get the dog to safety and our focus is to help Noel recover and heal. If you don’t read on, please know that Noel is now safe and loved in a PPR foster home.

Noel, a sweet 12 lb Spaniel/Terrier mix, is just 9-10 months old, but her life almost ended too soon. A group of kids had placed her in a bag, ready to toss her into a canal. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan witnessed the scene and immediately intervened, rescuing Noel from certain death. Poodle and Pooch Rescue was called to step in and help.

When Noel arrived at our vet, she was so scared, yet still so gentle and sweet. After a full exam, we found she was suffering from hookworms, whipworms, skin issues, and had 3 broken teeth. Despite everything, she was so loving. Over the next few days, she received her vaccines, a medicated bath, had a dental, and was spayed. The vet staff gave her extra TLC to help her feel safe and loved.

Just Friday, Noel went to her foster home, where she was incredibly nervous and silent for hours. She stayed close to her foster mom, carefully sniffing her new environment. Her foster mom describes her as super sweet, but also very timid—so clearly longing for love and affection. It's heartbreaking to think of how much fear Noel must have felt before finding her safe haven. Every time her foster mom moves or leaves the room, Noel cries, probably unsure if she’ll be abandoned again. But with time and love, we know Noel will realize she’s finally found a place where she’s wanted and cherished.

We need your help to continue saving dogs like Noel. Noel’s story is just one of our many heartbreaking cases. PPR is often the last hope for these neglected, abused, and discarded animals, and we can’t do this without YOU. Your donation, of any amount, helps us give these dogs the chance at a better life they so desperately deserve.

Save the Leftovers: A new perspective.

We recently came across a touching social media post from Britni, a vet tech whose family adopted Gus - one of our most memorable medical cases - back in 2020. We’d like to share Britni’s heartfelt words with you exactly as is, as we think they beautifully capture the spirit of our Save the Leftovers campaign:

“Happy Giving Tuesday :) This year (and every year lets be real) I’d like to direct everyone’s attention to Poodle and Pooch Rescue.

“We all know that I adopted Gus from them in 2020 and how eternally grateful I am for all that they did for him - and that’s exactly what I want to talk about. Not to be blunt, but animal rescue isn’t cheap. In 2021 I took over the office assistant position at my hospital and one of my tasks included invoicing services and collecting payments from PPR. It was so incredibly eye opening to see how much money went into everything. Each dog received vetting, preventative medications, any necessary surgical procedures and medications, grooming, and boarding. Gus alone was pushing $7,000 from intake to the day he was in my possession.

“In 2022 when I became a veterinary assistant and then technician, I saw even more of how much went into the care for these dogs. They were never denied anything. I saw limb amputations, eye enucleations, and lengthy hospitalization stays. If a dog needed something done to improve their quality of life, it happened.

“Through PPR I’ve met puppies, mutts, purebreds, elderly dogs, and misfits. No one was turned away and no task was too much. It has been such an honor to welcome a PPR dog into my family and to work alongside them.

“If you’re looking for a cause to support this year, please consider them so they can continue to give these kiddos everything they deserve and more. At the end of the day it can’t be done without their donors.”

Thank you so much for the kind words, Britni!

Meet Bessie – The Sweet Senior Who Deserved So Much More 💔🐾

Bessie is a 10-year-old Shih Tzu who came into a local shelter as a stray, placed in a small outdoor kennel with no a/c and no fans, in 95° heat. Bessie was not just another “leftover” dog; she was a sweet soul in desperate need of love and care. When PPR heard about her, we knew we had to help. Bessie was completely matted, blind, in excruciating pain from a severely damaged eye, and suffering with skin problems, a cough, and dental issues. Despite all this, her gentle spirit never wavered.

Bessie was very sweet but protective of her face and eyes because of the pain she was experiencing. We scheduled surgery for her quickly. The vet said the right eye that she removed was very painful, bulging and had severe glaucoma. The left eye did not appear to be painful but there was no indication that she could see out of it. After surgery, Bessie began her recovery in a loving foster home. She loved to cuddle, communicated with her foster mom, and quickly adapted to her blindness, navigating her world with quiet grace. She was a fighter, taking her meds like a champ and enjoying three meals a day. Suture removal came next and at first, she was terrified, unable to understand what was happening, but thanks to our dedicated vet team and her amazing foster mom, Bessie got through it and made a full recovery.

Today, Bessie is finally HOME—adopted by a loving repeat PPR adopter who specializes in providing forever homes to senior and special-needs dogs. 💖

We need help to continue saving dogs like Bessie—those who are overlooked, forgotten, and left behind in shelters. PPR is the last hope for these precious souls, and we can't do it without YOU. Every dollar helps give a dog like Bessie a chance at a better life. Please donate today—$10, $20, or whatever you can—to help us continue our mission to save senior and medically needy dogs in our community.

Courtesy Post: Meet Arrow & Peppa – two resilient lab mix siblings in need of help.

For several years, one of our volunteers has helped feed, vaccinate and spay/neuter six dogs living outside at a makeshift encampment. Despite their tough circumstances, the dogs have always been gentle and loving towards people, dogs, and even cats. Recently, the owner of the dogs was arrested and will not be coming back, leaving other folks at the encampment in a bind as they cannot afford to care for the six dogs.

Our volunteer stepped up to take in two of the six dogs - Arrow and Peppa. These sweet lab mix siblings are in need of medical care and forever homes. Arrow recently sustained an injured in his groin area that requires surgery in order to heal properly.

Both pups are good with humans, dogs and even cats. They’re doing well with house training and LOVE their soft beds - probably because they have never slept on one in the past. Arrow loves to play and is a tennis ball enthusiast!

Unfortunately, we’re drowning in dogs at the moment and we cannot commit to Arrow and Peppa - but, we’re sharing this post in hopes that someone else out there might be able to help. Similarly, there are still four additional dogs living at the encampment that need rescuing.

If you’re interested in adoption, would like to help with Arrow and Peppa’s medical needs, and/or can help with the remaining dogs at the encampment, please contact Josie at (386) 679-8848

Save the Leftovers Update!

So far, we've raised $5,172.00! Thank you to everyone who has made a donation, large or small. They all add up. The Save the Leftovers Campaign ends December 10th. We are at 52% of our goal of $10,000. Please help us get to 100% in the next 5 days!

PPR is the last hope for the leftover dogs at animal control like Maggie and her brother Duke. They ended up at a rural Florida shelter and, sadly, the bonded pair never got any interest from potential adopters. The stress and uncertainty at the shelter weighed so heavily on them, it’s no wonder no one was willing to give them a chance. But when PPR saw them, we knew we couldn’t turn our backs. Without hesitation, we brought this sweet duo into our rescue, and today, they have found their forever home—a place where they will finally feel safe, loved, and cherished for the rest of their lives. We can't save these dogs without you. Please help us save the leftovers by donating $10 (or more) at: give2ppr.com OR through Venmo: -PoochRescue. Thank you!

Adopt Ripley! He’s a playful terrier blended boy that is 4-years-young, and I weigh just 10 lbs.

General Behavior: Ripley is a clever boy, who is gentle and snuggly. He is a happy, high-energy boy who loves to give kisses.

Likes & Dislikes: Ripley would rate TOYS at the top of his list of things he loves. In fact, “destuffing” them is one of his favorite things to do. He also really likes to sleep elevated, so when his foster was not home, he would snuggle in on the couch or a chair so he could see what was going on around him. He is also a fan of car rides!

Training: Ripley does great with house training if let out on a regular, consistent schedule. He has good basic manners and walks pretty well on a leash. Ripley is food-motivated which should lend itself nicely to additional training.

Medical: Ripley is a healthy pup and will just require his monthly heartworm and flea prevention, like any other dog.

Other Animals: Ripley has experience with small dogs and would do ok with another small furry friend but could also do well as an only dog. His current foster home has five other small dogs, and Ripley has shown great manners towards his foster brothers and sisters. Cats are an absolute NO for Ripley. While he shows no real signs of aggression towards people and smaller dogs, he is not good with cats or other small animals (so no chickens, rabbits or other small animals).

Children: Ripley would be suited for a home with children of any age, as long as they are respectful of his size. Small children should always be supervised by the “grown up” in the home. He loves to snuggle with the 10-year-old boy in his foster home.

Home: Ripley should do well in an apartment, condo or home, but he should be in a home where he can be walked at least once a day, even if he has a fenced yard to play in. He can be left alone for several hours without issue, although his preference would be to have someone that is home more often than not. Ripley has free reign at his foster home and enjoys sleeping in the “people bed” at night.

Grooming: Ripley is minimal maintenance and just requires nail trims and bathing.

Overall: If you are looking for a small, energetic dog who is sure to offer you lots of love and cuddles, Ripley could be the one for you. All he asks for in return is love, commitment and patience as he adjusts to a new home.

Are you the one for Ripley? Please visit our website, www.pprfl.org where you will find the application to adopt. You’ll be put in contact with his foster family if it’s a potential match. Ripley is fully vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, and recently had a dental cleaning.

Save the Leftovers: Emma is Rushed to the Emergency Vet

This is our biggest fundraising campaign of the year. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by December 10th. This is a lofty goal, but one we hope to achieve with your help. At PPR, we take a lot of the dogs “left over” at animal control, the ones who may be old, in need of expensive vetting, the neglected, and the emotionally shut down dogs.

With your support, we can continue to rescue and care for dogs like Emma, a tiny Maltese mix who came to us in desperate need of care.

Emma is just 5 lbs and only 1 year old, but she’s already been through so much. When a local shelter called us about Emma, she had been found as a stray, alone and in excruciating pain. She had a severe infection, parasites in her intestines, and a dangerous gastrointestinal infection that required immediate medical attention. Without hesitation, we rushed her to the ER, where the vet team worked quickly to stabilize her.

She spent the night at the ER getting the care she desperately needed. It wasn’t clear if she would make it, but Emma fought. Thanks to the fast action of our team and the loving care she received, Emma slowly recovered and was able to move into a foster home where she was spoiled and loved. She was given time to heal, both physically and emotionally.

By the time Emma was ready for adoption, her foster family couldn’t let her go. Emma had already become part of their family. But Emma wouldn’t have had this chance if we didn’t have your support. Dogs like Emma need us — and we need you. Your donation ensures that we can continue to rescue, heal, and find forever homes for dogs that others have given up on.

🐕 $10 can provide a warm meal and necessary medication for a dog in need
🩺 $50 can cover the cost of a much needed medical treatment
❤ $100 could provide critical care and give us the resources to rescue even more dogs

If you believe that dogs like Emma are worth saving, please consider a donation to our Save the Leftovers campaign. To donate, simply click here: give2ppr.com. Or donate through Venmo: -PoochRescue. Thank you! 🙏🐾

It’s Giving Tuesday – Help Us Save the Leftovers!

This Giving Tuesday, we need your help to give more "leftover" dogs like Galileo a second chance at life. Galileo is a 5-year-old English Sheepdog/Poodle mix who came into care in desperate need. He wandered into a store to steal some food, with blood on his nose and matted fur full of painful dreadlocks. He was scared, suspicious of people, and in physical pain. On top of everything, he had a mass on his ear and an intestinal infection. We don’t know what Galileo’s life was like before he came into rescue, but we do know he was abandoned and alone.

When Galileo arrived at PPR, he had blood in his urine, likely from the stress of his ordeal, and he also needed care for his infections. With love and medical attention, Galileo began to heal.

Once he was physically better, he went into a foster home where he continued to flourish. He still didn’t like anyone disturbing him while he ate, but with time, he learned he would never go hungry again. As Galileo settled in, his true personality started to shine. He became a sweet, loving boy who loved meeting new people and playing with other dogs.

Today, Galileo has found his forever home—and he is thriving! He is a playful, affectionate pup who loves being loved on, playing with toys, and seeking attention from his family. He has everything he deserves now: a loving home, a full belly, and the joy of knowing he’s safe.

We couldn’t have saved Galileo without your support. Every dollar will make a difference in the lives of these dogs. Even if you can’t donate, please share this post with your friends and family. You never know who might want to help.

Save the Leftovers: Muffin

Today, we want to share Muffin’s heartbreaking story. Muffin's journey began in the most unimaginable way. She was left abandoned on a shelter doorstep, stuffed into a tiny taped-up box, unable to stand. The box was sealed shut with painter’s tape, and when the shelter staff opened it, they found a 13-year-old, 4-pound dog covered in fleas, severely matted, and so filthy that they couldn’t even tell if she was male or female. Her teeth were barely hanging on, and she was in pain—both physically and emotionally.

Muffin had been neglected by the humans who should have cared for her. But when she came to PPR, we promised Muffin that she would never be alone again. We rushed Muffin into our care, where she was immediately bathed, shaved, and given the medical attention she desperately needed. Our vet team discovered she was anemic, had severe dental disease, and a mammary gland mass. Despite all this, Muffin’s heart still had so much love to give—and we were determined to give her the life she’d always deserved.

But her road to recovery hasn’t been easy. Muffin spent the first month with us on a rollercoaster ride of health challenges. She went to the hospital twice due to weakness and infections, fighting to stay alive, refusing to give up. Slowly but surely, she started to improve. Muffin gained a bit of weight (she’s now up to 6 lbs, from 4 when she first came to us!) and had a dental procedure—now she’s toothless but feeling so much better. Muffin’s progress is slow but steady, and her spirit is undeniable. We’re committed to helping her heal, one step at a time. We’re not giving up on her—and neither should you.

Every dollar you donate to our Save the Leftovers campaign will help cover the care of other dogs like Muffin who need a second chance. With your support, we can keep saving lives like Muffin’s.

Volunteer Spotlight – Michael

Michael hasn’t always been a fan of dogs. When he was 8, there was a dog named Bulldozer who terrorized his neighborhood.

“The kids would have Bulldozer alerts, and we would all go and hide,” he recalls.

As an adult, Michael overcame his fear of dogs. Shortly before COVID, he adopted one of his own, which quickly bonded with his girlfriend’s dog. When the couple broke up, he made the selfless decision to let his dog stay with his bonded buddy.

Lucky for us, Michael discovered Poodle and Pooch through a friend on Facebook. “I knew she would only be involved in a first-class organization, and that was very intriguing to me,” he says.

Michael realized he needed a dog in his life. “I wasn’t ready for a lifetime commitment,” he says. “This is a good way to have a dog but also able to help out.”

Herman was his first foster, and he found his forever home in about 10 days. The timing was serendipitous. Shortly after Herman was adopted, Duffy, a wheaton terrier, needed a new foster because her current foster was moving.

That was back in July, and Michael knew this would be a longer commitment because Duffy, who has allergies, needed to see a dermatologist and her appointment wasn’t until October.

“Duffy is such a good girl,” he says. “Every interaction I’ve had with her with another dog has been positive.”

Michael, a Realtor, had worried that with his schedule, fostering would be difficult. Sometimes he’s home all day, but other days he’s out a lot. “I needed to foster a dog who was OK with being alone and not rip up the sofa.”

Duffy has turned out to be a dream dog, and she fits in perfectly with his life.

“As a new foster, the support I got is more than I would have ever expected,” he says. “I was so surprised at the level of thoughtfulness and patience.”

Michael also hopes more men might consider fostering, since PPR doesn’t have a lot of male volunteers: “I’d love to get more guys in the club.”

Thanks Michael! We think you’re awesome.

Save the Leftovers: Here is just one example of a “leftover” dog we saved in the last year.

Meet Lovey. Lovey is a 12-year-old poodle who was surrendered to a local shelter. She was terrified and in pain, and when staff discovered she was peeing blood, they knew something was wrong. X-rays revealed gigantic bladder stones. In pain, frightened, and with no one else to turn to, Lovey was left with nowhere to go — until we stepped in.

We rushed to pick her up from the shelter, where she was shaking in fear. She was immediately taken to the vet and put on pain meds. Lovey was covered in fleas, had skin tumors, and had hookworms. But that wasn’t the worst of it. The bladder stones were so severe, she needed surgery just to survive.
Lovey underwent a cystotomy, a delicate surgery to remove her bladder stones. Afterward, she stayed with our vet team to ensure her recovery went smoothly.

Once she was out of immediate danger, Lovey went to her foster home, where she was showered with love and care. She was a true "velcro dog," never wanting to leave her foster mom’s side. Lovey loved to curl up in laps, soaking up all the affection she could get. Once she was fully healed and no longer in pain, Lovey found her forever home—a family who would give her all the love and attention she deserved for the rest of her life.

Lovey’s story could have ended so differently. If it weren’t for the generous support of people like you, Lovey might never have received the medical care she needed. She would have been left behind, another “unwanted” dog in a shelter.

This is why we need your help. Your donation to our Save the Leftovers campaign will give dogs like Lovey a second chance. Please consider making a donation today to help us reach our goal of raising $10,000 by December 10th. Together, we can continue saving the dogs who need us most.

Save the Leftovers: A Second Chance for the Forgotten Dogs

Every year after Thanksgiving, while some dogs find their forever homes, the ones who are deemed less desirable — the "leftovers" — are left to languish in shelters. These are the dogs who are often ignored because of their age, medical conditions, or simply because they don’t fit the "perfect" image of a family pet. But we believe every dog deserves a second chance, and we won’t let them slip through the cracks.

Our “Save the Leftovers” campaign is dedicated to rescuing these dogs: the ones who have nobody else to turn to — except for us. And we need your help to save them.

🐾 Meet Lydia 🐾
Lydia is a 7-year-old Plott hound mix who was found wandering the streets as a stray. She spent weeks at a local shelter, completely overlooked. Why? Because she’s heartworm positive, and she has a tick-borne bacterial disease. Other rescues turned their backs on her. But we couldn’t. Lydia is now in a loving foster home, where she is receiving the medical care she needs to get healthy and, one day, find her forever family. She’s sweet, gentle, and deserves so much more than being left behind.

This holiday season, we’re asking for your help. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by December 10th so we can save more dogs like Lydia — dogs who have been passed over by others, but who still have so much love to give. Your donation will help us cover the cost of their medical care, rehabilitation, and, most importantly, give them a shot at a new life.

To donate, simply click here: give2ppr.com. Or donate through Venmo: -PoochRescue. This holiday season, let’s make sure no dog is left behind. Together, we can Save the Leftovers and give these dogs the second chance they deserve. Thank you for your generosity.

250 days: that’s how long Bella has been in our care.

This happy, healthy and easygoing gal has been hanging out with us since last March, patiently waiting for a family to fall in love with her and take her home.

This isn’t Bella’s first experience in rescue. She was born while in our care back in 2017, then adopted as a puppy. Unfortunately her adopters came upon hard times earlier this year and asked us to help, so Bella came back into our care after seven years of safety and security with the only family she’d ever known.

Now, Bella has been lingering on our website longer than any of our other current adoptable dogs - despite her many wonderful qualities.

To read Bella’s full adoption listing, please visit our website at www.pprfl.org. Let’s help this girl get seen! 👀

Sniff sniff sniff… Kali’s nose just alerted her to some delicious scents coming from the kitchen in preparation for Thanksgiving!

Here are some delicious dog-safe foods that will be on Kali’s plate this year:
✅ Carrots (plain)
✅ Green beans (plain)
✅ Cranberries (plain
✅ Sweet potatoes (plain)
✅ Turkey (skinless white meat, without bones)
✅ Corn (plain, no cob)
✅ Pumpkin (plain puree, no sugar)
✅ Apple slices

Kali will definitely steer clear of non dog-friendly foods, such as:
❌ Turkey bones, skin and drippings
❌ Onions, garlic and spices
❌ Corn on the cob
❌ Mashed potatoes
❌ Raw bread dough
❌ Stuffing
❌ Nuts
❌ Grapes and raisins
❌ Chocolate

If you have human friends or family visiting, you can either make a “no people food” rules or share this guidance with them in advance. You might also consider keeping some dog treats handy for guests who are eager to provide your pooch with a safe snack!

Happy Thanksgiving!
