This handsome fellow is 2 1/2 years old, neutered, UTD on vax, ready to be adopted. His name is Koa and he is a purebred Black Mouth Cur, a dog bred for hunting. He is a lover! And he’s got lots of energy! One of the great thing about him though is that he’s totally chill with hanging out at home with you relaxing, as long as he’s been properly exercised. Because of his exercise requirements we are being very picky about who adopts him. He’d thrive in a rural setting with land to run on and mice and rats to hunt. Runners, hikers, hunters, outdoorsmen, etc. He’s also a very sensitive pooch. He gets very concerned when people are upset and very scared when people yell, so we would love to place him in a home that is generally a happy and calm one.
Some fun facts about Koa:
-He is 70 lbs. and I believe will gain a little more as he matures.
-He is a skilled escape artist who knows how to work a doorknob and deadbolt.
-He is wary of strangers outside the home, less so in the home, but if he runs he will not let anyone approach him. If and when he finally does, it will be a woman.
-He is great with children, and is very protective of them as well as puppies. But he is also very excitable so may need to be supervised as he will jump on them when excited.
-He needs training! We are working with him and he is very eager to learn and very smart so I don’t believe this will be too hard, especially as he ages and calms down a little. Remember he is only 2, he is still a puppy.
-He is great with other dogs, however he is still learning how to play and can be aggressive in his play. He is best paired with other big dogs as he tries to play with little dogs as if they are big.
-Being a hunting dog, he has a high prey drive and will not do well in a house with cats, birds or pocket pets.
Koa, in the right environment, will be the best dog you could ever have, and as I sit here writing this, I am crying at the thought of not having him around anymore; he has brought so much joy to my family’s life.
