Our tradition of a Jan 1 hunt continued today. This is a strong start to the year. Tango has admittedly been slow to learn ruffed grouse and while she has pointed them, I have not taken a ruff over her yet. Today she had a solo run with Doug and I and she pointed a pair of birds in a small fir stand. Doug( )was able to connect with one. An honor to be able to share that moment with a good friend. I hope this is a sign of how the upcoming year will play out.

Blue Grouse. A bird that most people will never see, but they are an awesome bird that live in the mountains and spend their days on the hillsides in brushy cover. Some are dumb enough to sit around and let you get close, but most take flight well before you can get close.

A little stalk and point on a partridge in a tree. She established scent about 50yds out and only move up when I did. Once she was close she held perfectly. A good run on state ground today. Gotta love it when the NAVHDA crew leaves birds in the field.

Sometimes it’s nice to get back to the basics of dog portraits. There is no better time or place than Northern Michigan in October.
