Subject: Bandaids for Bunnies – File #95881

Dear City of Richmond public service leaders and decision makers:

I am writing this letter to after learning of an injustice initiated from within the walls of City Hall.

Bandaids for Bunnies has been rescuing sick, injured and at risk rabbits from the streets of Richmond for the last 9 years. They have been called on multiple times by the city and city run shelter to assist in moving baby rabbits found at construction sites or to help capture a sickly rabbit off the streets and get medical care. Multiple visits from the SPCA have received passing inspections and the rabbits are safe, provided medical care and fed a healthy diet. The rabbits in care are all over 4 years old and no more rabbits have been taken in since 2017.

At the time their rescue was established and filed for status with Revenue Canada, the bylaw was simply “a reasonable number of small animals” allowed on the property. The bylaw now states no more than 2 rabbits are allowed per tax paying lot, with no option for grandfathering for this organization when the bylaw was changed. Over the past 3 years, multiple by-law officers have approached the Director about the concern with the current bylaw and the Bandaids for Bunnies team has complied with requested visits, communications and reports of status as requested. This has now escalated with the current bylaw officer threatening to fine the Director, as the property owner, for not being compliant to the changed bylaw. The property owner requested to have a (temporary change) to their zoning to allow them to become compliant, but the city denied to even hear the request.

My request, as a concerned citizen, is for the city to work with this organization to allow the rabbits to live out their lives in a safe environment, whether that be at their current location or in the best case scenario, in a loving home. With the standard life span of 7-10 years, the expected timeline is 5 years or less. The organization is willing to provide updates to the community and bylaw teams, including regular planned visits to show the progress being made in reducing the number of rabbits on site. The organization is actively seeking fosters and adopters on a regular basis, and as the rabbits age, are passing away from natural causes.

Please provide me with assurance the City is willing to meet the reasonable requests of this organization. This is a great opportunity for the City to show their compassion for the rabbit population concerns well known to Richmond. I look forward to hearing a reasonable and humane solution to this concern.

***Help Needed!***

Hello everyone! We hope you are having a wonderful Holiday season and are looking forward to a great 2022. The team at BFB sends our apologies as we have been quite quiet over the last few years on social media. We have been diligently taking care of the buns in our care, working towards my goal to see them all in loving homes. Unfortunately, we’ve run into a problem that we are struggling to get through. When I started BfB, the local bylaw was a “reasonable number of small animals”. Today, that bylaw has changed to no more than 2 rabbits on a residential property. At this time, we have 43 rabbits in our care. The City of Richmond bylaw and zoning departments have collectively informed us that even on a temporary basis (until the bunnies pass naturally or find good homes), we are unable to rezone the property I currently own to allow us to continue to function without penalty. They are preparing to start fining us as of January 11th.

Here’s where we need your help:
1) We are looking for fosters to help take in as many bunnies as possible for a 2-6 month basis.

2) If you happen to have farmland in Richmond or Delta and would be open to us using some of the space on your land or have an indoor space we could use to house the rabbits as we get through this, we would love to talk to you about a possible arrangement.

3) Please consider donating we are always short on funds and volunteers.

4) Public support may help us in our cause; please reach out to the City of Richmond bylaw department at [email protected] (File #95881).

5) Finally, if you aren’t in a position to do any of the above, please share this post.

Our goal is to work with the City of Richmond and hope they will see a way to allow the buns from the streets of Richmond live out their lives in peace.

***I will be posting a copy of a letter that you can forward to the city if you don't know what to write in your own email you can copy and send this one, I will make a second post that you guys can copy. Thank you everybody for your help!***

We are looking for fosters to help take in as many bunnies as possible for a 2-6 month basis as we work with our legal team to work out a solution with the City of Richmond. We are open to permanent fosters, which means we will work with you to cover medical expenses and you provide a warm, loving home for the bunnies. You can reach out to us here on Facebook, Instagram or email us at [email protected] and we can get the conversation started.

If you happen to have farmland in Richmond or Delta and would be open to us using some of the space on your land or have an indoor space we could use to house the rabbits as we get through this, we would love to talk to you about a possible arrangement. We would take all responsibility for the bunnies and be on site twice a day to feed and do health checks, as well as once a week to clean cages and housing.
Please consider donating. We’re going to need every penny we can get to cover legal fees on top of the care for the bunnies. We are struggling like many other rescues, but those with bunnies have had it especially hard. Not only can we not hold our very popular Bunny Yoga sessions due to COVID restrictions, in the year before COVID hit, we were also impacted by the RHDV2 virus which is fatal to most rabbits.
Public support may help us in our cause; please reach out to the City of Richmond bylaw department at [email protected] (File #95881).

Finally, if you aren’t in a position to do any of the above, please share this post. We are a small rescue and have not had to deal with anything like this before, so we appreciate any feedback or insight on how to navigate this situation, if you have any experience with it ending successfully. Our goal is to work with the City of Richmond and hope they will see a way to allow the buns from the streets of Richmond live out their lives in peace.

One of our past volunteers came to us because their rabbit was newly single after losing her mate and looking for a new potential boyfriend. So Morrigan came out today to speed date and try to find a new friend. Normally we try a few different bunnies out on a date like this, and let the bunnies decide who that it the best. Today the first bunny was tried was Clyde (who had lost his sister a few months ago I was finally ready to try to find a new friend as well). Well it was love at first sight and Clyde cuddled right after her she cuddled right back. So he went home to continue the dating process at his new home with his new girlfriend. It is not often that the bonding process goes this smoothly but we were very happy that our sweet little Clyde not only has found love but now has a great new home. Thank you Emily for bringing your sweet little girl out to us to find love. It makes my heart happy every time a bunny gets to go to home. If anyone has room in their home for a bunny or is looking to pair up a bunny please get in contact with us, we have lots of bunnies waiting for there forever homes.
