Hello everyone! We hope you are having a wonderful Holiday season and are looking forward to a great 2022.
The team at BFB sends our apologies as we have been quite quiet over the last few years on social media. We have been diligently taking care of the buns in our care, working towards my goal to see them all in loving homes. Unfortunately, we’ve run into a problem that we are struggling to get through.
When I started BfB, the local bylaw was a “reasonable number of small animals”. Today, that bylaw has changed to no more than 2 rabbits on a residential property. At this time, we have 43 rabbits in our care. The City of Richmond bylaw and zoning departments have collectively informed us that even on a temporary basis (until the bunnies pass naturally or find good homes), we are unable to rezone the property I currently own to allow us to continue to function without penalty. They are preparing to start fining us as of January 11th.
Here’s where we need your help:
We are looking for fosters to help take in as many bunnies as possible for a 2-6 month basis as we work with our legal team to work out a solution with the City of Richmond. We are open to permanent fosters, which means we will work with you to cover medical expenses and you provide a warm, loving home for the bunnies. You can reach out to us here on Facebook, Instagram or email us at [email protected] and we can get the conversation started.
If you happen to have farmland in Richmond or Delta and would be open to us using some of the space on your land or have an indoor space we could use to house the rabbits as we get through this, we would love to talk to you about a possible arrangement. We would take all responsibility for the bunnies and be on site twice a day to feed and do health checks, as well as once a week to clean cages and housing.
Please consider donating. We’re going to need every penny we can get to cover legal fees on top of the care for the bunnies. We are struggling like many other rescues, but those with bunnies have had it especially hard. Not only can we not hold our very popular Bunny Yoga sessions due to COVID restrictions, in the year before COVID hit, we were also impacted by the RHDV2 virus which is fatal to most rabbits.
Public support may help us in our cause; please reach out to the City of Richmond bylaw department at [email protected] (File #95881).
Finally, if you aren’t in a position to do any of the above, please share this post. We are a small rescue and have not had to deal with anything like this before, so we appreciate any feedback or insight on how to navigate this situation, if you have any experience with it ending successfully. Our goal is to work with the City of Richmond and hope they will see a way to allow the buns from the streets of Richmond live out their lives in peace.
