UNL Student Organic Farm A dirty-fingernails, mud-between-your-toes, student-designed take on agricultural learning.

The UNL Student Organic Farm began in 2013 when a few devoted students had a dream of converting an old asparagus patch on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's East Campus into something great. These pioneering students created the first 100% student-run Organic Farm in the history of the University. In 2017 and 2020, thanks to the incredible generosity of The Green Fund, raised beds, a bat house,

trellises, and a rainwater collection system were established. This also marked a change in growing strategies with a new emphasis on permaculture, intercropping, mini-farming, and companion planting. The Farm seeks to donate as much produce as possible to the disadvantaged and needy in partnership with the Husker Pantry and The Lincoln People's City Mission. In 2017 & 2020,100% of produce grown went to feed the hungry and homeless.

Itsssssss ground cherry time 🍒

Ground cherries are a small, yellow-orange fruit that have a sweet-tart flavor similar to pineapple with a faint background flavor of tomato. Super delicious 😋

We’re in for a hot and dry summer. That means your yard might need a little extra care- and by extra care, we mean, less attention! If you want to maintain your green lawn through this hot season, remember: be . If you know that we won’t be seeing moisture for awhile, let that lawn go (about 3 days longer than you normally would). Longer grass holds moisture. Over-mowing can cause your grass to brown right before your eyes! Practice patience, and you will be rewarded with a healthy lawn.

First donation of the season!

Yesterday, we harvested bok choy and arugula to donate to the Husker Pantry. We filled the whole fridge and even spilled over onto the counter!

Nearly 1 in 3 students at UNL worry about not having enough food this is why we have made it part of our mission to reduce food insecurity on campus.

New and improved!

After a few months of cold weather, our hoop house got a new covering. Traditionally, these coverings are only supposed to last 2 years, but we made ours last for 6!

In the coming weeks, we will be setting up a heating system then getting some seeds in the ground for the season 🌱

Up next on our exec introduction is our Treasurer Michael Stackpole! Michael is a Junior Accounting major with a minor in finance. This year, he is focusing on getting the farm's finances in order and creating our first budget. His favorite produce is apples and he's excited for the next harvest where we can see the results of our work. We are thankful for Michael's leadership!
