With the much-anticipated revision of the Corydoradinae catfishes just published (see our post from earlier today), as promised I'd post a full list of where this puts the described species in this new classification, please see below.

This study represents a significant advance in the understanding of phylogenetic relationships within Corydoradinae. The authors note there is still work to be done on Corydoradinae catfishes though.

"Despite the comprehensive sampling conducted in this study, it is acknowledged that further sampling of certain species is required to achieve a more complete phylogenetic analysis. Additionally, a taxonomic investigation is necessary to address the non-monophyly of certain species, which might potentially indicate the presence of cryptic species or species. Therefore, a meticulous morphological review of each revalidated genus is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of the group. Furthermore, a reassessment of the current taxonomic arrangement, considering the newly identified clades, is essential to enhance our knowledge of the group."

From the paper - "Our results corroborate the hypothesis of monophyly of ๐‘†๐‘๐‘™๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘ฆ๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘ฅ proposed by Brito (2003) and Alexandrou et al. (2011), who named this assemblage lineage 3. All topologies demonstrate that ๐ถ. ๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘‘๐‘Ž๐‘– belongs to this group and is the sister of all species in this genus. Specimens of ๐ถ๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ๐‘‘๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘  ๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘‘๐‘Ž๐‘– were known only from its type series at the time of the studies by Reis (1998) and Brito (2003), and were not available in the original collections in the same period (Hieronimus 1995). Sampling efforts by some authors of the present paper (C.O. and M.R.B.) at the putative type locality resulted in a relatively large number of specimens that allowed examination of characters that recovered ๐ถ๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ๐‘‘๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘  ๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘‘๐‘Ž๐‘– in ๐‘†๐‘๐‘™๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘ฆ๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘ฅ, and herein we propose them combination ๐‘†๐‘๐‘™๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘ฆ๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘ฅ ๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘‘๐‘Ž๐‘–. This combination appeared for the first time in the study by Fuller and Evers (2005: 272), although without any information to justify it."

Most of the Characidium, (Darter characins), available from the Colombian trade originate from eastern Colombia, particularly around the area of Villavicencio. Here, we have a photo of an exceptionally rare Characidium found in western Colombia. The only species officially described in this region was C. sanctjohanni, described by Dahl in 1959 in Noanamรก along the Rio San Juan. During our latest expedition, we encountered a Characidium that bears resemblance to the recently described C. tatama, potentially making it one of the first published images, maybe the first one alive of this stunning and peaceful darter tetra.

In the tropical andes from Colombia, fish diversity sharply declines over 2000 meters high. Most of the species adapted to such high altitudes-low temperatures- low food enviroments are catfish from the Genera Astroblepus, Trichomycterus and Eremophilus. Few characins are present. Pictured here is one of the highland tetras in Colombia, Grundulus bogotensis, an interesting and peaceful ,although not very colorful silver tetra.

Perhaps lesser-known within the Lebiasinidae family (splash tetra and pencilfish family) are Lebiasina. These larger predatory tetras are commonly recognized for their aggressive behavior towards conspecifics. Yet, this Lebiasina elongata, pictured during our expeditions, presents a remarkable exception to this behavior. In our experience, this particular species has shown peaceful tendencies under normal aquarium conditions."
