Karen, , is a 1 yo Hound Mix and Frosty, , is an intact 2 yo Hound/ Bull Terrier Mix
who have been at the Shelter since 12/3. They came in together and are likely siblings. JUST 7 DAYS!!

Their shelter notes say that they are shut down and and underconfindent. They have been placed on behavior medication to see if they might help.

They are at the Contra Costa County Animal Shelter at 4800 Imhoff in Martinez, CA. Theircadoption Status is unclear.

Cowboy, is a 2 yo intact black GSD who has been at the Shelter since 12/3. JUST 7 DAYS!!

Cowboy's shelter notes say: Dog is very nervous and stressed. He will not engage with handler, just kept pacing and panting. He was brought to quiet room by handler and offered a chewy, but wouldn't take it. He would not settle and continued panting and pacing. Dog needs more resources than the shelter can provide. HE IS JUST SCARED AND NEEDS TIME TO DESTRESS.

ANNA AND ZACK ARE SAFE AND HAVE LEFT THE SHELTER

They were rescued by Fairy Tails Dog Rescue in San Francisco. Tiffany Montesano said this about the dogs: Anna is in my care now. She is loving going on walks. And is just so sweet. Zack has a very special foster who is a special education teacher. He is thriving . He really just needed lots of love and cuddles. He has an appointment tomorrow with a potential adopter.

BRUCE IS SCHEDULED TO BE KILLED ON 12/20

Bruce, is a 1 yo intact Brindle pittie boy who weighs 52 pounds. He has been at the Shelter since 11/18.

Bruce is on behavior medication to reduce his stress and anxiety.

Bruce is nervous and scared in his kennel. He can be distracted with treats and leashed using treats as a distraction. He seems to be a bit more comfortable with women than men, but that is based only on 1 interaction. Once he is leashed, Bruce walks nicely outside and explores tentatively. He alternately barks and gives playboys indicating that he'd like to play, but is not sure how.

Bruce was taken out to do a meet and greet with another dog. He seems more comfortable interacting with other dogs. His playgroup notes say: Tried him with Penny Lane (social spayed female). Fence greeting went well. Penny started running up and down fence which got him to run. Then they sniffed again. Bruce looked like he made a few air bites, but Penny didn't appear worried and wanted to play. We opened the gate and she started running around. He chased her and would air bite but didn't act like he wabted to hurt her. Once she slowed down, they both sniffed each other and started running again.

SHADOW IS SCHEDULED TO BE KILLED ON 12/14

Shadow, is a 14 yo neutered Siberian Husky who has been at the Shelter since 11/28. WTF?!! THIS IS TERRIBLE.

Shadow's bloodwork shows increased liver enzymes. His Rescue or adopter should follow up with their veterinarian who may recommend additional diagnostics such as imaging or more specialized blood work to determine the cause of the increased liver enzymes.

Shadow is at the Contra Costa County Animal Shelter at 4800 Imhoff in Martinez, CA. His adoption status in unclear.

He was rescued by Shannon Miranda in cooperation with Martina Animal Rescue and will be immediately transported to Miranda's Rescue.

Pledges for Griffin are being collected by Martina Animal Rescue who will send one lump sum payment to Miranda's, as is the normal and preferred practice.

Agatha, is a 5 yo spayed Yellow Lab Mix who was surrendered on 11/10 for killing the adopters chicken and duck. The adopter also stated Agatha was not good with their cats and they were concerned for their safety.

The adopter had a trainer working with Agatha, but surrendered her anyway.

It says Agatha has been at the Shelter since 11/10, but there are no pictures, videos or comnents in her record.

This is why I can't stand Kathy Mills and this is why she is a disgusting person:

Dessy George found a foster for Whimsy, a dog who is due to die tomorrow, 12/6. Teresa, the Foster Coordinator, asked Dr. Mills if Whimsy could be fostered thru CCAS. Dr. Mills said: There isn't time to approve a new foster for Whimsy, since she needs a commitment by 9 a.m.

So, she'd rather kill a dog than extend her an extra day to get the foster approved?!

***A MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR WARD***

To CCAS Staff and Volunteers,

Together, we've achieved extraordinary milestones that have transformed the lives of both people and animals in Contra Costa County, and I am extremely fortunate to have worked with the staff and volunteers at CCAS over the last eight years.

Many of you know that I have been struggling lately with health concerns in my family and having to spend time with family back east.

During my last visit in October, it became clear to me that I needed to move back east to be closer to my family.

Today, it is with a mix of emotions that I announce my decision to step down as Animal Services Director. The choice to step away from this incredible journey was undoubtedly one of the most challenging of my career. I’m deeply grateful for the unwavering commitment and passion of our remarkable staff and volunteers. In making this difficult decision, I have identified that my last day at CCAS will be January 19, 2024.

The County Administrator’s Office will begin the recruitment for my position soon. If a candidate has not been identified before my last day, they will announce an interim Director who will help to support the Department until a new Director steps into the role.

I want to emphasize my sincere appreciation in having the opportunity to work with each of you. Our work is never easy. To see our staff and volunteers coming to work every day with the compassion and commitment of doing what is right for the animals and families in Contra Costa County is inspiring. Keep that focus and believe in the work you are doing. Never forget to celebrate the little successes and work with our community to continue to save and enhance the lives of people and animals in Contra Costa County.

Thank you for giving me the wonderful experience of working with you to make a difference at CCAS. The collaborative spirit and tireless dedication of our team have created a lasting impact, and I leave with a sense of pride in what we have accomplished together. I am confident that this department, fueled by the same spirit, will continue to reach new heights in service of our community.

12/1/23 UPDATE: Dessy George and Rachel Klein visited Baloo today. Their comments, pictures and videos are below.

BALOO IS SCHEDULED TO BE KILLED ON 12/6

Baloo, is a 4 yo intact brown Mastiff who has been at the Shelter since 11/14. He weighs 108 pounds. He came in with Barron, a 2 yo intact brown mastiff.

Per his shelter notes, Baloo is very aloof unless giving him treats. I WOULD BE ALSO!! He is doing a lot of panting and pacing in his kennel. He is being placed on behavior medication to see if it helps him adjust.

Dessy said this about Boloo: Baloo and Barron are brothers! Baloo is the smaller of the 2 dogs and is very bonded to his older brother, Barron. He is not as confident when separated from Barron, seems timid at times and not sure of human touch but tolerates it in a friendly way. Baloo would rather play with his brother if he has a choice. His face is adorable, beautiful body!

Laguna's exit from the Shelter is very complicated and convoluted. She was nearly PTS, but an adopter came forward at the last minute. Then, the adopter decided to adopt a different CCAS dog, leaving Laguna fighting for her life again. Howard's Hound Haven saved her at the last second because one of their fosters needed to switch the dog they were currently fostering for a different one and Laguna seemed like a good fit.

He was rescued by Alex Clark from Cal Paws K9. Here is what the Rescue said about Indio's first day of freedom:

"This senior boy got to go home and to a family willing to give him lots of love. His foster family are wonderful and they are already CalPaws alumni! After seeing his story they wanted to help. How lucky are we and more importantly, how lucky is Indio that he had someone chose him?

Today he had a bath. It is obvious it has been a long time since this sweet boy had been bathed, if ever.
Seeing him curled up in his new bed, relaxed and in a deep sleep……this makes it so worth it, this is the best part of rescue. This boy has a very special place in our hearts.

Today and from here on out, Indio will only know what it is like to be cared for and loved! Welcome sweet boy! 🐾🐾❤️🐾🐾

12/1/23 UPDATE: Dessy George and Rachel Klein visited Rory today. Their comments, pictures and videos are below.

RORY IS SCHEDULED TO BE KILLED ON 12/6

Rory, a 1 yo neutered white terrier who has been adopted twice and returned twice for biting both adopters. One bite broke skin and one bite did not break skin. Rory was in a home with a 2 yo child who was allowed to pet him and "lie on him to show his affection." Rory nipped the child. The bite was minor and was treated at home. The adopter retuned Rory for his "aggressive" behavior toward the child. THE IDIOT ADOPTER HAS NO CLUE HOW STUPID THEY WERE TO ALLOW THEIR CHILD TO LIE ON A BRAND NEW DOG!!

The Shelter staff said that Rory is a very active dog and would do well with an active adopter. He would probably do better in a home with older children.

Dessy said this about Rory: Cute, playful, loving, fun little, loves to be in your lap and hug you! Super sweet little dog that seems to be perfect in every way!

Kyrie, is a 6 yo intact tan and white pittie who was transferred from an E-Vet as a CONFISCATION CASE. He was just skin and bones wgen he arrived at the Shelter, weighing only 43 pounds!!!!

Volunteers said Kyrie is a wonderful, easy going companion who likes taking liesurely walks. They also said he is handsome, gentle and friendly.

Shelter dog ANNA facing a heartbreaking fate in the shelter. She needs rescue soon or she will be euthanized.

The shelter environment is causing Anna a great deal of stress and she has been placed on stress meds to help her deal with the anxiety she is experiencing from being locked up in the shelter.
With the right guidance and patience from an experience foster home and rescue group, Anna has the potential to overcome her past and rediscover the joy of companionship.
