Well, in almost 25 years of breeding cavies I have had some pregnant sows get pretty large .... but this new mumma would have to be up there with being the biggest. She was enormous, and these photos truely don't do her size justice.

Couldn't hold off cleaning her cage any longer so decided while she was out to get some photos, I really struggled to support the belly with two hands. (She delivered the following evening).

It was anyone's guess as to how many babies she would have and what weights.

Much to my surprise she had 4 big chonky babies, with the 'runt' of the litter being 127g!

(To those unfamiliar with newborn baby weights, I usually say average newborn weights are around 80-100g, with litters of multiples often being smaller sized).

So, let's have a bit of fun .... try and guess the COMBINED weight of the 4 babies.

I've already given a clue that the lightest was 127g.

Naww, nothing better then newborn guineas. 🥰 Liking the style of these two little golden boars born this week.

As many of you may not know, I'm also a member of the NSW Fancy Rodent Society (Rat & Mouse Club). I have owned mice as pets for over 30 years (longer than I have had the cavies) and decided recently to join the club - a way to be surrounded by likeminded people who enjoy owning mice as much as I do.

I just have a group of girls as pets and don't breed them, but enjoy being able to enter them into the Fancy Breed classes as well as the Pets (for those who don't conform to the relevant breed standard).

Over the last year I have won various Pet awards and some placings in the Fancy classes - but last weekend had my most successful day to date winning Champion Mouse (equivalent to Reserve in Show) with the very gorgeous "Too Many Mice Jasmine" - my young Siamese.

At the same show my Brindle Hereford "Too Many Mice Daylilly" also won overall Best Pet in Show.

Many thanks to Jodi-Lea and Anastasia for sending down these gorgeous girls. And many thanks to judges Wren & Bree for liking my girls as much as I do 🥰

Earlier in the year my older brindle & white Pet "Brenda" won Best Pet at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

I've also added a video as a reply (as it wouldn't let me post a video amongst the photos) of my new hairless mouse "Nudie Rudie" who I unexpectedly came home with last show.

I was also honoured to receive the "Club Volunteer of the Year" last year in my first year of membership 🥰

To those with mice or rats as pets I definitely recommend attending shows and being part of your local club as it's a nice day out and a fabulous way to be around people who share the same interest.

Wow... I have been super slack when it comes to posting show results so am making this post with a collection of photos from the last few shows.

I've had some great results with multiple BOBs at each show as well as numerous BIGs.

Super happy with how my baby Satin DE Buff has gone, winning Reserve in Show at just 3 months of age. Can't wait to see how he develops, already his colour is so even all over and has such a smooth coat.

Couldn't help but smile... took some photos today to show the sizing of these new Tunnels I have for sale. I put the girls next to it and they were the perfect models - didn't move and just stayed exactly where I sat them 🥰 guess they thought they were at a show and just sat there posing 🤭

Over the weekend NSWCC had their AGM with the 2023 End of Year Pointscore Awards being handed out.

I was very fortunate to have had a wonderful show season for 2023 and this was reflected in the awards received.

Cameron was able to make 4 shows last year, and won Best Junior Exhibitor each show, which had him also tying for the Most Successful Junior Exhibitor. Unfortunately being busy with highschool and sporting commitments on both days over the weekend he is unable to be involved currently.

Don't get me wrong, I love all guinea pigs and it doesn't matter whether they're purebred or cross bred they are still worthy of being loved and adored.

But it does make me laugh when I hear this comment (and believe me, we do hear it a lot), and this meme is so true ... especially when they whip out the phone to show a photo 🤭🤭

Arrived home late last night from work and one of my sows had delivered.... one of them is this teeny tiny roan - and by tiny I mean only 40g! He's a little premmy as belly hair is fine and a bit sparse.

💫 GOULBURN AG SHOW 💫

Yesterday I attended CCCC's double show as part of Goulburn Agricultural Show. Karen Nichols was the judge for the main show, with Mikaela Piper training, while I judged the Young Stock Show (so just entered the main show).

Had some fabulous results with my 5 year old crested golden sow (yes, 5!) winning Best in Show and my junior DE Buff winning Best Self (after 3 Reserve in group awards!) then going oh to place Reserve in Show. Had great feedback on all the cavies entered frm the judges.

💫 CANBERRA ROYAL 💫

WOW what an awesome weekend for Capital Country Cavy Club's return to the Canberra Royal Show.

This time around a double show was held over two days, with Sarina Etherington QLD judging Saturday and Dr Peter Ricci WA judging on Sunday.

Had some fabulous results on Saturday Winning Best Marked, Reserve Satin, Self, Crested and Ticked. They also ran a breeders exhibit class and my baby black roan won Runner Up.

Sunday though was the icing on the cake to finish off an awesome weekend Winning Best in Show with my Crested Chocolate, Reserve in Show with my black roan, Best & Reserve Marked, Reserve Satin, Reserve Self, Best Crested plus Best Adult and Best Baby in Show

Plus, lots of BOBs both days :)

Well the show season is well underway now and it's about time I posted some results.

11th Feb I attended NSWCC's 'Love Your Cavy' at Wyee with judge Vicki Easom, SA. Was a great first show back for the year with some great results with Best Marked and Crested, as well as Reserve Satin, Self and Crested.

The following weekend was HVCC's anniversary show with judge Peter Wright from QLD. I was fortunate to have won Best & Reserve Marked, Reserve Satin, Crested and Ticked, plus a Best Adult and also Best Baby award for my young roan.

Baby 3 - first try of milk. This bub seems to be feeding fine from mum but seeing as I had extra milk out I offered him some also - and as you can see he happily accepted an extra feed.

It's important to monitor new babies to ensure they're feeding properly and gaining weight. I noticed 2 of the Valentine's Day bubs were a little thinner than I'd have liked so offered them some milk and straight away they began feeding.

Mum has milk and is a wonderful mum in looking after the litter, but sometimes babies just don't latch properly or don't have a strong enough sucking reflex to get enough milk out. I'm glad I am able to help mum out to ensure these bubs thrive.

Love when newborns are all 'dopey eyed' 😍. Had this handsome boy born about 3 hours ago, such a cutie 🥰. Nephew to 'Malibu Cheys on Point'

Introducing the ever adorable "Hashtag Goldie Shawn" - 5 day old DE Golden Boar 🥰🥰 I think he'll be staying.

Cheys on Point would like to congratulate her sister on the delivery of a healthy litter.... but has put in a request for the 'roan' babies to have a bit more white next time 🤭🤭🤭 (pictured here with her new nephew) If anyone is after a black boar (roan breeding) it seems I may have a few available soon 🤣

Nom nom nom 👅 blep 👅 So giving a heavily pregnant sow in the cage beneath some calcium syrup and old girl Butternut Pumpkin always likes to have a try of whatever is on offer. I think she's quite a fan 🤭 kept coming back for more It smells very sweet (like caramel sauce) so wonder if it may have a similar taste 🤔

Someone seems to think chewing on the water bottle spout makes the hay arrive quicker 🙄🙄 But, I guess in his mind he chews the spout.... the hay arrives.... (not realising he'll be receiving some new hay regardless).
